Try to wake up at 2am or just not go to bed?

Politics addict (don't judge me) currently planning how I watch election night. Since having a child and turning 40 I'm not as good with lack of sleep and haven't done an all nighter for a decade! But I don't want to miss this one. Election night not everyone's cup of tea I realise, but can I ask about planning to stay up all night more generally.

The exit poll is at 10pm and then the first interesting results start coming around 2 am.

Should I
A) drink coffee / wine and stay up all night
B) go to bed at 10.05pm and set at alarm for 2am?

A bit worried setting an alarm for 2am will make me feel rotten and worse than if I'd just stayed up.

WWYD?

The next day I have to get up at 6ish (child will wake me) and drop my child off at nursery and freelance wfh - but in reality I can sack the work off.

I usually go for a doze in front of the telly between exit poll and exciting ones. I really wanted to do the all nighter at the Newscast studio but work and DD disagreed!

DontBiteTheCat · 01/07/2024 21:33

I have the same dilemma!

I really want to stay up, but I have work on Friday morning. I booked the afternoon off because I have evening plans (a gig) so I don’t want to be tired for that either. Gah! I doubt I’ll be able to sleep anyway!

EXIT POLL!!!

Haha ok sorry, didn't realise! But I'm not really interested and will be sleeping like a baby 😉

FLOWER1982 · 01/07/2024 21:35

Go to bed and find out at 6am?

4fingerKitKat · 01/07/2024 21:37

I’m debating this too! I think I might just settle on the sofa with my duvet and snacks and wake/snooze as I fancy. I remember doing that in ‘97 and being half awake for Portillo 😁

Go to bed and find out at 6am?

Definitely not an option!

If you’re not breathless in anticipation of the exit poll this might not be your thread 😂

Chewbecca · 01/07/2024 21:38

Oh don't, I would have pulled an all nighter on this one, napping on the sofa as needed but I am on holiday! Poor me!
I would have got comfy on the sofa with a blanket, turned out the lights but had phone alarm set for maybe 3am to watch results coming in, just in case I nodded off. Nap in the daytime.

DancingLions · 01/07/2024 21:40

@4fingerKitKat

I'll get my coat 🤣

Knea · 01/07/2024 21:43

I normally power through as I’m a bit of a night owl and have some energy drinks on hand. Going through some health issues this year though so will be embracing the nap method with some alarms in case I keep falling back asleep.

Dh got day off work on Fri so can pull all nighters and watch results .loves it will be having a nap when gets home from work no booze nor much caffeine lots of water and snacks to keep him going.
I'm away to bed but will get up really early , he'll wake me in event of dramatic story breaking
Enjoy you are not alone

Canadian876 · 01/07/2024 21:44

Hadn't thought of duvet on sofa as an option, but am now thinking this could work! Get snacks all lined up. Husband will be next to me, less keen but supporting my interest, so he could snooze and I could nudge him when something interesting happens! I'll set my phone alarm for 2am anyway and I I feel like nodding in the interim off I can.

Will prep with a Thursday afternoon nap and evening coffees. Grin

I’d go to bed and set an alarm. I watch the US election results (dual national) and first results start coming through around 2am ish usually our time. I always go to bed early and set my alarm for the middle of the night and dose on the sofa as needed til the morning. The morning after Trump won was rough though. I made it til about 4am and started to lose hope and just poured myself like a pint of gin. 🙈

I personally will go to bed, but I wake lots during the night so will just keep an eye on things.

frozendaisy · 01/07/2024 21:48

Is there another adult around early evening?
I would have a bath after work, put child to bed as early as.
Have a doze, it's amazing what energy a couple of hours nap early evening does.

Set alarm for 9.30pm

Have a glass of wine or rum and coke

Do you have to drive to nursery?

Depending on what your following day entails, I might be tempted to drink that nice £20 Aldi champagne until it is gone, actually you could start that in the bath and polish off at 10pm

As the results roll in switch to coffee

Turbo boost yourself with caffeine until child wakes

Have favourite child's breakfast, well easy breakfast, cereal with milk, sugar puffs if need be.

Get to nursery, very important but, under the limit if driving

Home, switch to calming chamomile or valerian root teas, last until you feel sated with results.

Have a nap.

Deal with the rest of the day when you wake up.

Set alarms.

Have no need to go to any shops for anything.

frozendaisy · 01/07/2024 21:53

I did portillo moment

And stayed up as long as I could for Brexit, watched Scotland, thought yeah this will be fine. Fell asleep all happy. Woke up early, asked H Brexit results. Thought he was joking until the BBC confirmed it!

To be honest the football is hard enough this week.

4fingerKitKat · 01/07/2024 21:53

I think I will be knackered as I’m doing a 7am-10am shift at a polling station, then a full day’s work, then will be on ‘get out the vote’ door knocking until late evening. So I may just crash out post exit poll and miss it all!

VotesAndGoats · 01/07/2024 21:55

What time are the actual results?

I'm reminded of the Brexit referendum when I got on a crowded commute train at 8am. The reactions were all like OH SHIT this day is going to go differently than planned.

I just don't think I can take the suspense and would rather just turn on when it's known.

frozendaisy · 01/07/2024 21:58

@Canadian876 start a polling night thread
I expect I will pop in and out.

I still have driving school run in morning so need to be on it but might wake early and join in once the fun starts

We could have posts on who we want to lose their seat most, although the top slots have already said they aren't running again only Farage and Rees-Mogg in that race really

Magehemela · 01/07/2024 21:59

I would try get some sleep.

Even if I felt rotten waking at 2 I know I'd feel better the following day having had a bit of sleep.

I am, however, chronically sleep deprived from my kids so never turn down the opportunity to sleep.

Borris · 01/07/2024 22:02

I've done on call night work. Some sleep is always better than none in my opinion

Growlybear83 · 01/07/2024 22:02

I'll be staying up as long as I can stay awake. I usually go to bed at about 1 anyway so I will be wide awake when the first results start to come in. I usually manage to keep going until about 4or 5 for general elections. I've got to be in a meeting at 10 on Friday but I expect everyone else there will have stayed up very late too. 😆

NotDavidTennant · 01/07/2024 22:03

The last couple of elections I've gone to bed after the exit polls, got up at 2.30 for a couple of hours to see some of the seat declarations and then gone back to bed again.

This was based on past experience that nothing much happens for the first few hours.

TokyoSushi · 01/07/2024 22:03

(Also mega nerd here) I'm in my Polling's station all day, then I'm going to make a proper bed on the sofa with duvet etc, nap until 02:30ish with the TV on low and then watch it all from my 'bed.' I've done it before and it worked well!

Ineffable23 · 01/07/2024 22:03

Polling night thread sounds like an excellent plan. I'm out the country and gutted. I need to work out where I am going to get my politics info from, hoping that I'll be able to get C4 in Germany or the Beeb if not...
