Try to wake up at 2am or just not go to bed?

Politics addict (don't judge me) currently planning how I watch election night. Since having a child and turning 40 I'm not as good with lack of sleep and haven't done an all nighter for a decade! But I don't want to miss this one. Election night not everyone's cup of tea I realise, but can I ask about planning to stay up all night more generally.

The exit poll is at 10pm and then the first interesting results start coming around 2 am.

Should I
A) drink coffee / wine and stay up all night
B) go to bed at 10.05pm and set at alarm for 2am?

A bit worried setting an alarm for 2am will make me feel rotten and worse than if I'd just stayed up.

WWYD?

I want to stay up but will fall asleep. I always do.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 01/07/2024 22:07

I'm planning to try and snooze for a while immediately after the exit polls then up at 2 ish. I only work for a few hours Fri am so will hopefully have afternoon nap.

I have great memories of '97. I was 3rd year student, had done finals and literally had nothing else to do. We stayed up all night huddled round a portable TV toasting each result as it came in.

Noooooogsh · 01/07/2024 22:19

I’ll be 23 weeks pregnant and have to go into the office on Friday, meaning that anyway I’ve tried to work out staying up on Thursday is just a terrible idea 😂 all I can try for is a middle of the night wee to see a few results

Polling night thread sounds like an excellent plan. I'm out the country and gutted. I need to work out where I am going to get my politics info from, hoping that I'll be able to get C4 in Germany or the Beeb if not...

Will you be in a hotel in Germany? If so, you'll almost certainly have BBC World, CNN International and possibly Sky News available.

purser25 · 01/07/2024 22:21

I remember as a teenager from about 15 or 16 staying up,to hear the results coming in. It was quite exciting wouldn’t have the stamina now. The swingometer etc.

TokyoSushi · 01/07/2024 22:22

You all need to join the Sunak threads, we've been leading up to a polling night thread for about 2 years! 🤣

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 01/07/2024 22:26

@Canadian876 actually there has never been an exit poll at our polling station so how they do a precount!! I have always managed to stay up for uk and us elections but they started at 2am saying that some areas werent starting to count until 10am the next day and even then, an area of scotland had three recounts!! wish I had just gone to bed!

Can you not go to bed earlier than 10? If I needed to be up at 2 I'd go to bed as early as possible. 8-2 would give you 6 hrs which isn't bad.

I presume she wants to see the exit poll.

ButterCrackers · 01/07/2024 22:37

I’ll be getting up early in the morning to get the news. I’ll go to bed earlier than usual.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 01/07/2024 22:59

I'll be having a nap on Thursday afternoon and then settling in for the rest is politics special overnight.
Sod's Law will mean that I will fall asleep despite being a chronic insomniac!

LawlorsNaa · 01/07/2024 23:05

Go to bed.

Georgethecat1 · 02/07/2024 06:28

I would avoid the exit poll at 10, go to bed 8pm and then get up 1.30-45ish recap on exit polls ready for 2am.

CalicoPusscat · 02/07/2024 06:30

Yep I'd get a few hours sleep in first.

Did you say if you were working or not on Friday? If not praps a mini champagne and some snacks!

Nigellasstickytoffeepudding · 02/07/2024 06:33

OR just go to bed as normal and when you get up, the result will be exactly the same as it was ever going to be?

I enjoy politics but I don't understand this.

I usually go for a doze in front of the telly between exit poll and exciting ones. I really wanted to do the all nighter at the Newscast studio but work and DD disagreed!

This

MollyRover · 02/07/2024 06:36

I would probably put it on record, avoid radio/tv/ social media etc until you get dc off to nursery and then make a day of it while dipping in and out of work. Fruit, pastries and fancy coffee optional Grin

Countrylife2002 · 02/07/2024 06:37

I’m going to bed at 1030 then up at 3 as I think most interesting results come in 330am onwards. Am not drinking, but getting in fresh oj and croissants.

Hotel but I think it's halfway between a hotel and a hostel so I am not sure if I will have anything as exotic as a TV in the room! Keeping my fingers crossed though.

DoublePeonies · 02/07/2024 06:39

I've never been able to do an all nighter. 4 hours sleep would be ok to function tho.
So, I'd watch the exit polls, then set an alarm for about 2.30.

Countrylife2002 · 02/07/2024 06:40

I was at the Lab Party big Royal Festival Hall party in 97 and the Portillo moment was AWESOME

BBC livestreams worldwide for big events (elections, coronation, death of the Queen etc.). Just go to the BBC website.

siriusblackcat · 02/07/2024 06:57

Thanks for this thread as I'm contemplating the same. DS 17 has ASD and has become very interested in politics (mostly the hope of seeing the tories destroyed 😁) and wants to stay up to watch the results come in.
He'll have no problem staying awake, I on the other hand will. So reckon it'll be duvet on the settee for me and he can prod me awake when needed. Thankfully I'm off work Friday so can snooze.

SnapdragonToadflax · 02/07/2024 07:00

Ah, a thread of like-minded people! It feels like the run up to Christmas when you're a kid - we even have special food in the house that no-one is allowed to eat as it's for election night 😁

My plan is to get myself settled on the sofa with the duvet and blankets, watch the exit polls then have a nap, with an alarm set for 2.45am. My partner is just as much of a political geek and is planning to do the same. We won't sleep very deeply on the sofa, so I'm hoping I'll wake up naturally a few times and won't need the alarm.

In the morning all I need to do is get my child fed, dressed and off to school (five minute walk), and then I can crash back into bed as I don't work Fridays and partner has booked the day off. We might go out for a nice late lunch before school pick up, if we wake up in time.

I've been waiting for this day for 14 years. Going to bed and seeing what happens in the morning is not an option!

UnimaginableWindBird · 02/07/2024 07:18

I'm planning on going to bed very early, at around 8 pm and getting up just before 3. Usually on election nights, I'll be up with wine and Pringles, but I'm considering watching the election coverage while making scones and having a middle of the night/early morning cream tea.

Our household is struggling to get the balance right as DH doesn't have to go to work, on Friday whereas I do, in a job where I will have to be functional.

HansHolbein · 02/07/2024 07:37

Bloody gutted that I didn’t book Friday off! Ugh.
