Do you consider yourself good looking?

I’m OK in real life, but not the least bit photogenic šŸ˜‚

You?

Not too bad, all things considered.

pinkspeakers · 02/07/2024 12:22

On the whole, I've become happier with my appearance as I get older. I think I have a broader view of what can be beautiful. Plus I'm lucky that the basics of skin/hair are aging pretty well, so 50+ looks a lot better than I thought it would! (yes I realise that kind of contradicts the previous sentence). Either that or I'm just getting very short sighted and it's all a soft focus blur.

Divasaurus · 02/07/2024 12:40

I now realise that I was very pretty in my teens, 20s and early 30s but have always suffered from
low self esteem. I gained a lot of weight from my mid 30s onwards due to PND and some other issues which I’ve only just lost, so starting to feel a lot better about myself again. Despite now being in my mid 40s I look the best I have in years due to the weight loss, my current skincare regime (thanks to retinol) and judicious use of Botox that I started last year. I certainly don’t think I’m a stunner or anything but I do get male attention and have been treated better by just about everyone (sadly even members of my family) since I lost weight.

Conclusion: a mixed bag! Some days I feel great about myself, on others not so much…

Sunnytwobridges · 02/07/2024 12:45

No, I’ve always been ugly especially once I became a teen. And I’m even uglier now with scars on my face and age wreaking havoc on it. I barely have any pics of myself past age 12. I’m jealous of everyone who are lookers. šŸ˜‚

thecatsthecats · 02/07/2024 12:50

All of my family on my mum's side have inherited a couple of very good looking traits - high cheekbones and large, almond shaped blue eyes. Plus most of us have very thick wavy hair.

The rest of our features are a mish mash of other relatives. I think I am basically good looking but not reaching the highs of other family members, and generally lack good grooming and a healthy weight.

I think I prefer to mooch on the edges of "potentially stunning" than make an effort and find out I'm not!

(My eyes are slightly asymmetrical, but my son has inherited the perfect eyes and we often get comments on how beautiful they are/he gets mistaken for a girl.)

TheBunyip · 02/07/2024 12:51

I was satisfied enough with my appearance to never have given it much thought. Then I spent 4 years staring at my face on zoom and now I’m acutely aware of every single imperfection

SlashBeef · 02/07/2024 12:54

I think I've got the makings of being good looking but I'm lazy. Could do with losing a bit of weight and more grooming but I'm tiiired.

Lavenderandbrown · 02/07/2024 13:02

Yes I do consider myself good looking. I always have. Not beautiful which I think requires distinctive features and an ability to photograph very well. I’m petite and slender and I think this goes a long way in my self perception. I started taking conscientious care of my skin at age 15 and it is very very nice. I had adult orthodontics. I let my hair go gray during Covid and receive many compliments on it. I dont think my features are unique or particularly defined but it’s a general overall mumsnet conventional attractiveness. I do not and have never really dressed for the male gaze. I favor feminine clothes and an American preppy style which are not revealing and this aligns with my DH taste. I have always enjoyed clothes and makeup and I have a defined style of what I wear. Sometimes my looks have made life easier but sometimes I felt a bias against me and thought I had to prove myself more. I am content to age naturally and will not do fillers or surgery altho I have had Botox a few times but the cost isn’t worth the results to me. I find many women attractive and I consider my friends and family attractive.

saturnspinkhoop · 02/07/2024 13:07

On a good day, when I’m done up, I look ok from the right angles. I’m not photogenic at all, in fact the camera downright hates me.

poshfrock · 02/07/2024 13:15

I used to think I was attractive for my age (53), slim figure, good skin, few wrinkles. Then my husband left me for a younger woman and now I feel like crap all the time and can't bear to look in the mirror. She's shorter than me and overweight so what does that tell you ?

frecklejuice · 02/07/2024 13:35

Christ no! I've got a really round head which I hate and I'm overweight but even slim I'm not attractive, I wear makeup every day but that's just to make my face more bearable! Photos of me are hideous so I don't let anyone take them.

Affair partners are almost always less attractive than the wives. It sounds like a cope but look around and you will see it's true.

TitInATrance · 02/07/2024 13:47

Good for my age in the mirror, get plenty of attention out and about, terrible in photographs.

OLD isn’t great for me.

I thought the OPs point in asking the question was about people often not looking as good in photos as they think they do in real life. And I think she has a valid point that photos often are unflattering.
However I just find it totally repugnant and alien to me to hear how some pp have answered in a literal way that shows what a high opinion of they have of themselves. I suppose this is the natural consequence of a society where physical attributes are seen to trump all other qualities such as kindness, decency, intellect and honesty, etc.
The posts generally fall on either: the self depreciating side or the vain side. If you ask questions like the OP has it is very revealing about what people are like.
Personally I think vanity is unappealing.

I don't feel I have a high opinion of myself purely based on how I look. As I said in my post, I just happen to have inherited certain, conventionally attractive features from my Mum and my Grandmother. Objectively, they were both better looking than me and my Mum's sister actually worked as a fashion model in the 1960s. So I cannot take any personal credit for it, so don't particularly attach much value or self worth to how I look. I won't deny that plenty of others attach a lot of value to them though and I've benefitted from 'pretty privilege' all my life.

But I'm not vain and rarely look in a mirror after getting ready in the morning. Anyone who mistakes me for a vapid doll soon realises that I'm so much more than just a pretty face.

YumiPlant · 02/07/2024 14:21

I think so, yes.

I feel good most days. There’s obviously times I don’t feel great.

I had my 2nd dc last year & put on 2 stone, I’ve lost just over 1 stone, so I’m starting to feel more myself again.

I don’t really like how my face looks carrying the extra weight - I’ve got decent bone structure and it’s actually starting to show up again šŸ˜†

tobee · 02/07/2024 14:32

Yes.

Well that seems a very sensible attitude.
At various points on my life I have had 3 friends who were really beautiful. And the one thing they had in common was that's just how they were, they weren't in any obsessive or vain about their appearance. I never once heard them comment on their own looks.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2024 20:33

I wish I was good looking just to see what it's like ! lol

Henowner · 02/07/2024 20:34

I'm absolutely stunningly beautiful, others weep in my presence šŸ˜‚

Somepeoplearesnippy · 02/07/2024 21:17

I think I'm pretty IRL (for my age). I was definitely gorgeous when I was younger but like the OP I very seldom take a good photo. I think my features are too small to photo well. Photogenic people tend to have strong bone structure and strong features. I

Phoenix06 · 02/07/2024 21:19

No, not these days but I have been at various points in my life.

Sharrilanda · 03/07/2024 20:01

I see there are quite a number of us who feel the same way.
I am genuinely ok with that though, as I said I know I look fine in real life.
Maybe there is some truth in that we are always our own harshest critic.
Being a fan of yourself is a good thing - no need to downplay that at all.
If you’ve got it shout it out I say!

When I look in the mirror I see positive stuff. I think I have quite pretty eyes, and my hair is a nice colour.

In photos, I look like a pig. Piggy eyes etc

It makes me question which one was right? Am I not photogenic, or am I too nice to myself in the mirror Grin

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/07/2024 22:42

Gos yes, exactly this. Look bloody awful in photos while people irl tell me I look nice.
