Ds, 19, what are these symptoms??

medianewbie · 30/06/2024 23:52

Violent vomiting for hours overnight so thought just bad dose of D&V. But very sore chest. Sore neck (glands like 2 hardboiled eggs). No temp but shivery.
Pale, clammy, massive headache not resolving with ibuprofen / paracetamol. Any ideas what it might be (covid?)
We are due on hols in 12 days (1st flight ever) & would really like him well.

@C152 - @medianewbie is in Scotland so Martha's Rule doesn't apply.

itsallabitofamystery · 01/07/2024 16:04

We hadn't been abroad either, but it was still TB. We never found out where she caught it from. They need to be putting him first on the list for a scan in the morning, id also be pushing for the CT too.

JustBeKinder · 01/07/2024 16:20

Have you had a look at his tonsils, it could be glandular fever or tonsillitis or an ear infection (also a nurse) I would get him seen by a Gp or nurse practitioner

Apologies have just read the rest and seen that you ve done all these things, hope he’s ok?

AnnieP1 · 01/07/2024 16:38

I know it's been said many times but why on earth don't people read the entire post before commenting.

TragicTess · 01/07/2024 16:41

have you seen a cardiologist? I work in a cardiac paediatric intensive care and we are seeing a definite increase in viral myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy (in all age ranges) both of which need prompt diagnosis and treatment.

medianewbie · 01/07/2024 16:52

Given Dd would be on her own all day, I held my nose & texted exH mid morning to ask him to go across to house (he's retired & not far away).
Dd wasn't thrilled but I called her & said it would be handy for her if she wanted to get a lift to come see her brother for 10 mins & she could do some gaming in the basement meantime if Dad annoys her (he does). I texted exH ditto.
So I just call her to say Ds has no tests now so does she want to come in for 10 mins with Dad, then I'll take her home whilst Dad sits with Ds. Turns out Dad left at lunchtime. She says he had a meeting. He says she 'told him to go away & it's not his fault'. I'm tired, but I'm not impressed. Nor is Ds (who unfortunately overheard).

He could have sepsis? Is he on a drip for fluids? That does not sound good.

if you ask for a test and they refuse, ask them to write that in his notes that this has happened eg ‘MRI requested by next of kin and was refused.’ Insist they write it and they might change their mind.

Im in a different country but if you keep getting different opinions you can ask for a ‘clinical review’ here and this triggers a more serious look at the symptoms by other doctors. Again, ask them to write in the notes ‘clinical review requested’

Good luck x x

Thisoldheartofmine · 01/07/2024 17:21

@medianewbie
Sorry to go on just feel frustrated. Wow, no way are you going on !
Excellent advice re insisting that note made if you ask for test and it's refused.

MrsBillyhargrove · 01/07/2024 18:09

@medianewbie i don’t know if it’s been mentioned already, but please please use Martha’s Rule. Listen to your gut. If your son is declining, scream, plead and keep shouting for him to be heard. I hope he is better soon

Ds, 19, what are these symptoms??
medianewbie · 01/07/2024 18:15

@MrsBillyhargrove thank you. He doesn't seem to be declining. But I'd rather know those markers weren't rising. I'm in Scotland so as @prettybird says, there is no Martha's Law

The lack of urine output is also a concern. Are the doctors aware of this? Is he on a dip to replace fluid?

PoopingAllTheWay · 01/07/2024 20:30

Yes no urine in 12 hours could be a sign of sepsis
Are they aware? Is he drinking enough?

Autumnleaves888 · 01/07/2024 21:04

Thinking of you @medianewbie I hope he is okay ❤

TragicTess · 01/07/2024 22:38

No urine in12 hrs could be due to low cardiac output - has he been reviewed by cardiology yet?

Disuf · 02/07/2024 07:00

How has he been overnight, OP?

medianewbie · 02/07/2024 09:47

@Disuf He's been moved to an 8 bed medical observation ward. 6 of the beds have elderly dementia patients so doors at the end corridor are locked. Ds is finding it pretty stressful.
He said he is very nauseous & won't drink in case he's sick (I've had words & told him I'll ask re a drip if he doesn't)
He says 'they brought him some meds in the night as his heart was too fast'.
But they've just done 'full bloods' & taken him for an ultrasound. When we've got results I'll see. He's desperate to get home (the guy in the bed next door keeps taking his nappy off & pushing it under the curtains).
I want to know exactlywhat is going on & if he's safe to leave before we do.

That sounds very hard @medianewbie .
Unfortunately I have had similar experiences with a relative in hospital.
I so wish I could offer words of wisdom and an action plan on how to access someone who is coordinating his care.
The only thought I can offer is to speak to one of the senior nurses to get their advice.
Don't forget to keep yourself as hydrated as possible.

Mirabai · 02/07/2024 10:19

Have they sent a cardiologist to see him OP? If they don’t be I’d looking for a private cardiologist to take him to once he’s out. Bearing in mind private heart tests are expensive - an ultrasound is around £500, 24 hour ecg similar. An MRI would be in the ballpark of £700.

Marmunia10667 · 02/07/2024 10:20

WhereIsTheHare · 01/07/2024 14:36

There has been a much higher rise in myocarditis and heart issues following Covid infection.

From the BMJ..

Meta-analysis indicates vaccinated individuals were twice as likely to develop myo/pericarditis in the absence of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to unvaccinated individuals, with a rate ratio of 2.05 (95% CI 1.49–2.82).

medianewbie · 02/07/2024 11:12

Cardiology just came by. They're saying 'probably post viral Myocarditis with moderate LVSD'. Doing a chest CT & cardiac MRI today.. Moving him to high dependency unit. He's on betablockers, bisopralol & 'dapper something'??? Asked if history of sudden heart failure in family. He'll see a Cardiologist each day. Cancel holiday.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 02/07/2024 11:16

I'm so sorry about your holiday and that this is something rather than nothing. But I'm relieved for you that they are now on the case. In some respects the HDU may be an easier place to be in terms of sharing space with other patients.

Has your DS got a tablet and a set of headphones? This is something I found useful for DD if things were kicking off in our shared bay in hospital. She could be oblivious if she was engrossed in a film or whatever.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 02/07/2024 11:19

Oh OP how worrying for you. But at least there is a plan in place 💐💐

OP I’m sending you huge hugs. Thank goodness you got him in when you did. I can’t say much that’s useful but I’m thinking of you both and checking in to see how it’s going.

So sorry STBX is so useless. Do DD’s school know the situation? Are they able to offer or direct you to any support through this crisis time? My DS is ASD so I feel for you ❤️

Fraaahnces · 02/07/2024 11:28

Thank goodness you weren’t abroad when this happened! I’m sorry your boy is in a stressful ward thoug. Not exactly conducive to beneficial rest. Your ex sounds like he really does need to be binned for a reason. What a wanker.
