Changing amalgam fillings to white?

Has anyone done this recently, if so were your dentist quite receptive to doing it? How much did you pay per tooth?

Yes I had this done. I can't remember how much it was - but we did it over 4 sessions (focussing one for example bottom left, then bottom right etc). I am so glad.I had it done as for some reason with aging, the amalgam had gone really dark.

I had this done for getting married. I was told they would last 10 years. That was in 1998 and they are still going strong. Easily one of the best things I've ever done. Back then I think it was £40 per tooth, so I'm guessing it will be a fair bit more now. I had four and it was done in two sessions.

I had one done at the beginning of the month, with the nhs check and private white filling it was around £180. This wasn’t a removal of an old one though.

I paid £480 around 5 years ago for 6 bottom ones to be changed. That wasn’t added on to an nhs check up though.

Just recently had one replaced - €160 per tooth (Ireland) another tooth booked in for next week 😭

One of my amalgam ones on premolars needs changing so was going to do my pre molars and leave my molar tooth until they need doing! Are you a dentist?

Yeah I’m definitely going to keep my amalgams in my molars I think. You can’t really see them. It’s more because my pre molar is in my smile so you can see it’s discoloured

I’ve had virtually all my fillings replaced in the last few years, the last one was a bottom molar that was virtually all filling, it cost £176 that was 2 years ago.

My dentist has said he'll replace old fillings but only when he feels there's a need rather than to make them look nicer.

Dental nurse here, we do this often obviously Private treatment as only replacing for cosmetic reasons. When you go for a consultation please ask if they will remove the entire discolouration. If amalgam has been in a while you may have amalgam tattoo/staining. This is when the amalgam has been removed the surrounding healthy tooth is still a grey shade due to leakage staining of amalgam. Just ensuring as if your paying £180+ per tooth you want the results your after. Also if in the future you will whiterning complete this before removing old fillings too. Many patients don’t and the yellow composite shows once whitened.

This is reassuring - I’m debating getting one of my molars done and it’s practically all filling thanks to neglect in my teens and half the tooth snapping in my pregnancy!

Thank you for this this is really helpful! if I have a slight tinge of grey in the tooth from amalgam staining would the tooth still look a bit better with a white filling? I’m not fussed about 100% brightness it just looks quite black currently

Replacing amalgam fillings with white isn’t just for cosmetic reasons. Amalgam fillings contain lead and are banned in much of Europe. They truly should be banned everywhere. All private dentists use white. I had some health issues a while ago and after a battery of tests was told I had quite high levels of lead, potentially caused by a lot of dental amalgam. I was told to get my multiple amalgam fillings (I’m a child of the 70s, what more can I say?) replaced. However I also have very cracked teeth :-(( so it wasn’t possible as the likelihood of losing teeth was too high. If I could, I’d have all my amalgam fillings replaced in a heartbeat.

There's no lead in amalgam and they're going to be banned in the EU.

I've just had a 30 year old amalgam filling in molar replaced by a white one, and this grey "tattooing " has happened to me
.the tooth is still grey and mottled even with the white filling. Was £170. The filling needed replacing, and I was really looking forward to getting a nice new white filling but in all honesty I'm quite disappointed with the result. I won't be rushing to replace the others unless I need to.
