Does your pet have 'a person'

Queenofwistfulthinking · 28/06/2024 23:08

I would love either a cat or dog but sadly my work schedule does not allow this just now and wouldn't be fair to them.

My favourite topics/threads on Mumsnet is either reading about the cats or dogs and all their different quirks and personalities.

One thing that always fascinates me is that most of them have a chosen person who they are devoted too.

Does your pet have a person, who is it and can you think why?

Yep, DH. It's because our dog is a pest to walk so DH is the dog walker. We all love him, the dog, like he's our child though but he'll always be a Daddy's boy!

Bridgertonne · 28/06/2024 23:11

I am my cat’s number one person, I have no idea why, I never give him treats like the rest of my family do.
He is obsessed with me, stalks me all day long and sits on my lap every night. As soon as he sees me he kneads and purrs.

LuluBlakey1 · 28/06/2024 23:14

Yes, we have two cats and I am their chosen person. They adore me and don't much like anyone else but tolerate DH. If PIL come to the house they go to the bottom of the garden whatever the weather. They keep out of DCs way unless DC have cat treats when they deign to accept a couple.

We have 2 brothers. One is definitely ‘mine’, the other is a daddy’s boy. Each pair we’ve had choose their person. Mine will follow me upstairs, my DH’s will be at his feet in the study. They chose early on.

Picture of mine on my knee, as per,

Our late cat loved DH, they watched football together and he (the cat) had a favourite team.
current cat's favourite person was dd but since she went to uni, DH and I are a poor second. I feel bad for the cat.

Diversion · 28/06/2024 23:15

Our cat had our 2nd DD, he chose her when we went to pick him and kept her company when she had glandular fever in her teens. She moved out a few years ago and is now sadly allergic to him but DH is now his preferred human. He loves it when his mum visits and I hand her anti-histamines the second she walks through the door so that she can fuss him. I am simply his human slave who feeds him.

Overlyanxious · 28/06/2024 23:16

I'm my cat's favourite person. I spent the most time with her as a kitten so I think that's why.

OneAndDon3 · 28/06/2024 23:18

I am my dog's person. She sleeps lying along my side, snoozes under my desk when I am working, races to me if we're out walking and multiple people call. When I'm sick she won't leave the house or my side.

She's learnt to give me weird human like kisses too. She comes over and pushes the soft dry fur under her nose against my lips.

daffodilandtulip · 28/06/2024 23:18

I'm my dog's number one. Well, number everything really. The kids could say "sit" 976 times and she won't sit until I say "go on then!" She follows me around the house, won't stay in the room with just the others. If the others have been out all day and I nip to the loo or something, and we walked in at the same time, she would come and greet me first and excessively!

SirChenjins · 28/06/2024 23:18

Yes - me, because I do the really fun stuff with him. He loves everyone else in the family too but I’m his special person which does feel a bit intense sometimes!

catherinewales · 28/06/2024 23:19

I'm my cats person. I do everything for them though. My little one is nearly 1 and he follows me everywhere meowing at me but will get into bed with my DS every night for cuddles. My older one he's 3 when I sit next to him he just purrs straight away. I'm not a cat person but these 2 beauties are my life xx

Gettingbysomehow · 28/06/2024 23:19

My cats only have me so we are very close. The younger black cat just loves one of my friends and is always super excited to see her wheras Tabby Tabkins (nickname) will hide under the bed if she is here.
I was married previously and the 10 cats we had over the years (now deceased) did not favour my husband, they were all my cats. I think they sensed he was not particularly interested in them.

SallyWD · 28/06/2024 23:19

My cat adores me way more than anyone else in the family. He's my little shadow. It's because I'm the one who loves him and showers him with attention.

Ginkypig · 28/06/2024 23:20

our cat loved us both but I was her person

she always wanted to sit on me or come to my side of the bed to get under the covers or follow me to the toilet and sit at my feet even when there was the choice of both of us. She would rub my face hard with hers until she drooled with pleasure too!

she would show dp affection and got excited when he came home running to the door like a dog 😂 she definitely loved him too he was her first choice to play with but for cuddles it was me.

Nellieinthebarn · 28/06/2024 23:23

Our dog believes that I am his own special person.

He waits outside the bathroom when I'm in the bath or even just in the loo. He rushes back from his morning walk with DH to find me, he likes to sleep with his head on my feet in the evening, in the daytime he is lying in the doorway of any room I am in so I cannot escape without him noticing. He always comes with me to the garden. It's lovely to be the object of his devotion, but a bit suffocating tbh.

He loves all the family, but he is a bit obsessed with me. Apparently it's common with German Shepherds to be like this and pick a person that is theirs.

decionsdecisions62 · 28/06/2024 23:25

My rescue dog - that I rescued at aged 13 now favours my husband!

Our other older dog aged 16 just favours her bed and anyone that will give her snacks!

The cat favours my daughter. Basically none of them favour me!! Except when I have snacks.

Tralalaka · 28/06/2024 23:26

My dog is all about me until DP comes over and then he forgets I exist

adriftinadenofvipers · 28/06/2024 23:28

I have three cats, two girls and a boy. DCat1 adores my eldest and sleeps on their bed at night. DC is saving to buy a house and threatening to take DCat. It may be the best option but then DCat would be alone all day which she often protests about!

DCat2 is very attached to me, but loves everyone really. DCat3 (boy I've had for nearly 6 months now) adores me and cries when I leave the room sometimes! He usually waits at the door for me to come back! I spend all day with 2 and 3, as I wfh and they're always with me. DCat1 hates them both and takes herself off upstairs!

Mitsky · 28/06/2024 23:34

We have one cat aligned to each of us but I am definitely their preferred overall person as he’s away a lot. They follow me round all day, sleep on my side of the bed, wait outside the bathroom etc which they don’t do with him really.

FlippityFloppityFlump · 28/06/2024 23:36

I was my DDog's favourite person. He loved DH and DS too but he was always my shadow. We got him as a pup 4 years before we had DS. I worked from home and DH was away Monday to Friday most weeks so I guess it made sense that I was Ddog's person.

He was my soul dog and I don't think I'll ever have the same relationship with another dog....if I ever have another dog. It's been 2 years now and I miss him every day.

MoreIcedLattePlease · 28/06/2024 23:39

Everyone in my house thinks DDog’s person is me.

I think it’s DS1! But actually, she adores all of us and is beyond loved in return.

fieldsofbutterflies · 28/06/2024 23:46

We have three cats and a dog and they all sit with me - DH only gets a look in if he has food 😂

My boy is exactly the same, has been since the day I brought him home. For such big dogs it's amazing how many times a day they trip you over

spikeandbuffy · 28/06/2024 23:48

Me

I was not a cat person and then a neighbours Birman decided I was. Since then I'm the one that strays, ferals, neighbours cats gravitate towards
I have a not my cat that's been visiting since 2019, and if my neighbours kittens are AWOL, he checks they're not in with me (they climb in the window to come and find me)
Confused

My own cat is obsessed, and demands to sleep under the covers with me every night wedged virtually underneath me

EasterlyDirection · 28/06/2024 23:49

DH is definitely DCat1’s person, she follows him up to bed every night (I tend to go up earlier) and will always choose his lap first (although I get a lot of cuddles as deputy-person second best). DCat2 is more mercenary and favours whoever feeds her but is more aloof generally (although incredibly gentle and snuggly when she chooses to be). DH is favoured overall because he never takes them to the vet, gives them tablets, or combs them.
