Does your pet have 'a person'

I would love either a cat or dog but sadly my work schedule does not allow this just now and wouldn't be fair to them.

My favourite topics/threads on Mumsnet is either reading about the cats or dogs and all their different quirks and personalities.

One thing that always fascinates me is that most of them have a chosen person who they are devoted too.

Does your pet have a person, who is it and can you think why?

Yep, our cat is obsessed with DH. I think it’s because he was off work for a couple of months when we first got him as a tiny kitten and DH is pretty nocturnal when he’s not working, so they bonded during the nights (DH is also more into physical play with the kitty whereas me and DS play with him with toys).

DH was away with work for a week earlier this month and it was the kittens first time without him - he finally got very affectionate with me (after six months of being DH’s cat) and since his return the cat has continued to be a bit more soppy around me but is still very much DH’s cat!

We have three cats, plus a couple of strays (no chip) that I feed and pay for vets bills when needed.

All of them like me best, I think because since having children who then grew up and left home , I sort of care for the cats on autopilot - they only have to look at me a certain way and I'm opening doors, pouring milk, finding a bit of chicken, going out into the garden to make sure other cats don't jump on them, getting their toys down, combing fleas out etc

They do interact with and snuggle up to DH and DC when they are here, but I watch them trying to communicate with other humans who just don't get what they're trying to say. It's funny and a bit sad watching my cat mobilising her whiskers and eyebrows and tail to communicate something and being patted absentmindedly by someone who isn't properly looking.

I'm sure that's why cats often go for middle aged mums, they know that you've been trained by the baby to be observant for signs of distress!

Our girl cat Trina is addicted to me, she lies all over me and spends most evenings on my lap. She still has moments of being skittish but usually calms when she hears my voice when she's not ignoring me

Here she is trapping me in bed

I am definitely our dogs chosen person. When I leave the room for 5 mins and return, it is genuinely like she hasn't seen me for a week.
When I'm cuddled on the sofa, she will bound up and just throw herself on my lap on her back for tummy tickles.

But she knows her job is to "protect" our DS, so when he goes to bed she lays in his room until he is snooring then she comes down, when he out playing she sits watching him and if we play fight (DS and me) then the fluffy one barks at me !!!!

Absolutely. One is firmly my dog and the other, DSs (then DHs and I’m at the bottom 😂). My dog was mine before I even met DH, I actually got him with an ex boyfriend so in his 12 years, he’s been through a lot of life with me. He sleeps on our bed (annoying!) and follows me everywhere I go, even to the bathroom where he sits on my feet 😂 DS dog, we got her when she was 4 months and he was 6 months and they’ve grown up the past couple of years together. They’re inseparable.
We also have a few farm dogs and they’re all mine too, I do everything for them and they kick around with me and DS every time we’re outside, which is a lot. They’re loyal and protective towards DS too but what I say goes!

Our 3 dogs all favour me and all previous dogs have been the same, I'm not the one who feeds them and share the walking with dh.

I think the reason is that I work with dogs so I automatically make them feel at ease, happy and safe, I have so many customers who tell me that their dogs have been to other groomers and wouldn't walk in or were quiet when they left but are happy with me.

I feel much more at ease with animals than people so we have the same effect on each other.

Maybe I was a dog in a previous life 😄

I remained my cat's favourite person even after I moved out at university.

We adopt old cats, and one pair had had to share an old man - whenever there was just one person, they'd queue and take turns sitting. The pair before them just both piled on.

Fontainebleau007 · 29/06/2024 09:37

I am my cats favourite. But I've had her for 17 years, before meeting my DH, before having children etc. I've been her forever person 💖

Haveanaiceday · 29/06/2024 09:46

My dog seems to favour DH a bit as she spends more time with him (and he spoils her) but she is happiest when we are all together as a family. She gets really playful and tries to make everyone join in her games.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 29/06/2024 09:57

Yes the cat has chosen me as his person. I’m not a cat fan, never wanted a cat and was utterly furious when teenage DD brought him home after getting him behind my back. Little furball has won me round now though. Despite DD’s best efforts he isn’t at all interested in her and will literally slap her hand away when she tries to pet him. He never sits on her lap but is permanently on mine, and will bat my phone out of my hand if he feels I am not giving him enough attention!

Blueuggboots · 29/06/2024 10:09

Oh yes. We have 2 cats and my male cat is devoted to me. He'll only sit on my partner if I'm not there.

This was him lying on me last night while I was watching Bridgerton.
