I don't have a tv licence because I don't watch live tv or iplayer.

Ex husband moved out and took the tv licence with him.

He then proceeded to watch player on my account in his house rather than his own.

Now I'm getting letters threatening me saying i have to buy a licence.

I literally haven't watched anything and I've told him to log out of my iplayer. What now?

Change your password so he can’ t’forget’ to log out, then send them a letter explaining.

Changingplace · 26/06/2024 08:23

Change your password then tell them you don’t watch live TV or iplayer.

Hermittrismegistus · 26/06/2024 08:38

Are the letters 'To the occupier'? If so, just ignore.

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 08:40

Sorry I should have been clearer I'm not looking for obvious advice like change your password which I've already done.

It's whether they have any legal basis for enforcement if my iplayer account has been used.

I obviously already told them I don't watch tv or iplayer and the email address I told them from is the same one that's linked to my iplayer, hence them knowing.

No, they are to me because I used my email address to tell them I didn't have a licence and that's the one that's linked to the iplayer account he couldn't be bothered to log out of.

This I don’t have a license but had Netflix and Disney they send me letters once a week. I don’t respond.

StrawberriesandMango · 26/06/2024 08:43

They can't see if you've got iPlayer, Netflix or other online accounts. That would be more access than even the Police have get a grip and stop being so paranoid.

They can - and have - seen that my iplayer account has been watched.

The letter is about iplayer, I didn't know what they were talking about as I hadn't used it then I checked my history and it was full of fucking bargain hunt which is ex husband.

Your iPlayer account has nothing to do with this. They will see that the address had a TV licence then it was moved to a different address so your property is now flagging at potentially watching without a licence.

They send threatening letters all the time to try and make people who aren't sure sign up and pay.

Iplayer has everything to do with it. Ex h had sky, watched bbc on that.

Then he cancelled it recently and started watching in on iplayer - my iplayer - and then I started getting letters.

Letters about Iplayer.

Hence Iplayer having everything to do with it.

Not sure why you think you know better than the tv licensing people who have written to me saying my Iplayer account has been watched - which it has!

Isn't there a 'log out of all devices' option on iPlayer?

wishuponastar1988 · 26/06/2024 09:06

Email them and complain saying you feel harassed by their threatening letters when you do not need a license and you want them to stop immediately. I did this in 2021 and they replied apologizing and said they would make a note on the system - haven't heard from them since.

Nectarinesarenice · 26/06/2024 09:07

I had the same, cancelled license as never watched bbc or live tv and then my DC logged in to watch a programme and I got the same message. I paid it because she had logged in and watched it and there was no way the tv licence people were going to take pity on me and be reasonable 😄

JumpstartMondays · 26/06/2024 09:09

Or just delete your iPlayer account if you don't need it any more...

How long has he been watching your iPlayer for without you having a licence?
If you boot him out/delete your account then you can show it's no longer used, and id probably offer to pay for however long it has been used for (was it 1 month or 12? E.g.)

Probably but I wasnt aware his tv was logged in under my account and the separation was pretty horrific so thinking about whose account was logged into the tv wasn't on my mind,

That's not an option I have to pay for a full licence or pay a 1k fine

OP posts:
SummerSnowstorm · 26/06/2024 09:11

I would pay it and then cancel after a month if possible? And email explaining that you will pay as you're aware you ex watched on your account but that you don't need one as you don't use it so will be declaring no licence after the month of payment for your ex watching.

Then I'd choose the cheaper option of the 2

JumpstartMondays · 26/06/2024 09:12

Is there a number you could call and have an actual conversation with a person about it?

ZenNudist · 26/06/2024 09:12

Ask them to cancel your iplayer account. I think you are saying there isn't a password and isn't a log out of all devices option. Can you not put a password on your account? There must bea solution to this otherwise all you'd need to watch is layer without a license is someone else's email address. What have the licencing people said you can do about someone using an iplayer account without your permission. It takes 5 mins to set up with a new email. Can you go round to ex and do that on his TV and ipad?

I don't think it is, when I looked into the tv licence when he left they wanted £45 a month for 4 months then it goes to something like £18. You can't cancel after a month

SummerSnowstorm · 26/06/2024 09:13

Or alternatively, put the onus on them to prove it. Send them your IP address and tell them that as they can see it wasn't your IP but your exs where he has a licence.
They probably can't actually check IP easily but gives another bit of evidence that you're not just trying it on.
