Hassled by tv licence people

I don't have a tv licence because I don't watch live tv or iplayer.

Ex husband moved out and took the tv licence with him.

He then proceeded to watch player on my account in his house rather than his own.

Now I'm getting letters threatening me saying i have to buy a licence.

I literally haven't watched anything and I've told him to log out of my iplayer. What now?

Megifer · 26/06/2024 10:04

Op honestly they can't do anything unless people admit they watch live TV to them, or are daft enough to let them in.

I wouldn't give this even 5 minutes of my headspace. If they turn up just shut the door in their face and bin any more letters.

countrysidelife2024 · 26/06/2024 09:20

has he been watching Live? as it only counts if the iplayer is playing LIVE.

People make that mistake so often, you ONLY need a licence IF you are watching at the same time as it is being broadcast on tv ( LIVE)

Wrong

@letthegamesbeginagain

Would it help you if you were able to pay for a licence using the Simple Payment Plan? It spreads the payments into very small amounts over the year.

You and the children could watch anything you liked once you were signed up.

https://signup.spp.tvlicensing.co.uk/cop/#/faqs

Edited

You have to be invited to join that.

And I don't want a licence.

Don't see why I should be bullied into paying for something I don't want.

Dr Who has finished now,.

Is there not a phone line you can ring ?

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 10:06

"You and the children could watch anything you liked once you were signed up."

Sorry I'm particularly annoyed about this situation and the heat is making me grumpy but did you mean to speak to me as though I'm five years old?

No.

The SPP is something worth considering.

@letthegamesbeginagain every Internet connection has its own identifier. This is called an IP address. This will be logged by the BBC. Just write to the licensing people and explain that your ex husband used your account fraudulently and that they will be able to see this as the IP address is not one that you use. Explain that you have changed your password to prevent this happening in future, and give your ex husband's contact details for them to pursue him.

I haven't read the full thread, so apologies if this has already been stated.

It's by invitation only, as I said to you upthread. I've not been invited.

I know about IP addresses, thank you, I'll try the phone number someone posted upthread.

Tinylittleunicorn · 26/06/2024 10:16

I don't think you need to mention who was using the account. Just say where it was being used - at an address with a TV license. As I player has not been used at the address which is unlicensed, there is nothing to pay. I think??

TheSquareMile · 26/06/2024 10:22

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 10:11

It's by invitation only, as I said to you upthread. I've not been invited.

They may include you in the eligibility because they are sending you correspondence addressed to you about not having a current licence. Receiving a calling card from them is one of the criteria which makes someone eligible.

If you ring them they should be able to tell you.

I appreciate now that I have read your post about Dr Who that you don't want to watch TV at the moment, though. I'm not sure what else to advise.

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 10:31

@TheSquareMile the simple payment plan is for people in financial difficulty.

Which is not me.

Which is why I'm not eligible - I haven't missed payments.

I don't have a licence because I neither want nor need one.

OP posts:
letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 10:33

@TheSquareMile 'receiving a calling card from them' is not part of the eligibility criteria. Being visited by enforcement officers is.

I wish people would just give accurate advice or not offer it.

Not if you don't use the service or want it though.

Slight hijack. We don't have a TV license. I just found out a visitor to our house has watched live football on ITV-something on her ipad on our wi-fi. Could I be liable?

No, they can watch on their own device.

I don't think so because the device wasn't plugged in, apparently that matters.

Rockschooldropout · 26/06/2024 11:13

My understanding is that it’s the address that’s covered by the tv licence therefore in effect he watched player at his own address not yours .
They would have to prove that you logged in at your own address .
I would not be paying a thing and would just delete the player account . Let them prove it - not the other way round .

Rockschooldropout · 26/06/2024 11:17

Essentially It's just another scare tactic by TV Licensing. All they know is that a BBC Account that has the same email address as a No Licence Needed "claim" has been used. It's nothing more than that, and certainly isn't remotely approaching evidence of Licence evasion.

DexaVooveQhodu · 26/06/2024 11:20

Ohwelldone · 26/06/2024 09:51

Yeah have a look, I've just looked at ways to pay and it definitely says monthly at £15, quarterly 4 payments throughout the year of £45 or something like £145 for the whole year

The OP's offer will be higher as they will be making her "catch up" payments for the time that her home has been unlicensed. Your figures will be correct for new licences.

oakleaffy · 26/06/2024 11:33

I never watch TV but have a licence as very occasionally watch iplayer but wirelessly-

If one uses iplayer on Wi-Fi does one not need one?

I pay a license, but really resent it -
The sooner they abolish the tax the better.

I have heard they are arseholes and bullies- It’s a lot of money for something one doesn’t watch.

Bargain Hunt?

Is that still going?

user1491396110 · 26/06/2024 11:38

I got the same email as you. I had an iplayer account from years and years ago, before i moved here. Password must have been saved on the laptop my Dad used it on more than one occasion when babysitting not realising he shouldn't. It was the same email address I told them I didn't need a licence with. I explained the situation said it wasn't me but must have been Dad and I wouldn't be getting a tv licence because I don't watch it (Dad has one anyway and was him watching 🤷‍♀️ don't think I said this though) and I never heard from them again.

If you watch iplayer yes you need a licence no matter how you access it. If you resent it just don’t watch iplayer and don’t pay it.

I had a good read around this a while back. I was under the impression that it was the individual who buys the licence who was covered as we were using an iPad at a property without a licence but visiting for a short break. It wasn’t especially clear and I imagine that is kind of the point sadly.

They are however particularly aggressive. We are renovating a very run down property which ha la been empty for around 5 years now and we’ve had many letters and many enforcement letters citing that they will be visiting as we are using TV without a licence.. the house isn’t habitable, it’s stupid really.

Don’t pay OP. You haven’t used your account. You have been made aware the account was being abused by your ex husband (suggest enclosing his contact details..) and have now changed your password accordingly. Tell them any further communication with you on the matter will be deemed as harassment.

The sooner the BBC is self funded the better.

I associate BBC with the likes of Savile.

I bet lots of people living on rough Estates don’t bother with licences , and the bullies probably don’t hassle them, but go for the easy targets like OP

Many years ago someone knew a woman who worked for TV licensing, and marked down addresses as non residential..so they never received hassling letters or visits.

That seemed really unfair.
