Hassled by tv licence people

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 08:17

I don't have a tv licence because I don't watch live tv or iplayer.

Ex husband moved out and took the tv licence with him.

He then proceeded to watch player on my account in his house rather than his own.

Now I'm getting letters threatening me saying i have to buy a licence.

I literally haven't watched anything and I've told him to log out of my iplayer. What now?

Ask them to cancel your iplayer account. I think you are saying there isn't a password and isn't a log out of all devices option. Can you not put a password on your account? There must bea solution to this otherwise all you'd need to watch is layer without a license is someone else's email address. What have the licencing people said you can do about someone using an iplayer account without your permission. It takes 5 mins to set up with a new email. Can you go round to ex and do that on his TV and ipad?

He's not watching it anymore. That's not the issue.

They're pursuing me over the few days that he did.

Is there a number you could call and have an actual conversation with a person about it?

No, there is not.

I don't think it is, when I looked into the tv licence when he left they wanted £45 a month for 4 months then it goes to something like £18. You can't cancel after a month

Thats extortionate! No wonder theyre struggling to get customers, 200 in 4 months is insane, then 18 a month is enough to pay for netflix and Disney plus!

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 09:16

JumpstartMondays · 26/06/2024 09:11

Then I'd choose the cheaper option of the 2

I think ex should pay for it. He's been so blase about it, just ignore the letters, send them away if they turn up. Easy to say when he's not the one being threatened.

Exactly, hence why I didn't buy a licence when he moves out as we dn't actually watch bbc.

I'm so pissed off about being put in this situation when I was so careful about me and the kids not using iplayer.

They can - and have - seen that my iplayer account has been watched.

The letter is about iplayer, I didn't know what they were talking about as I hadn't used it then I checked my history and it was full of fucking bargain hunt which is ex husband.

Contact them and say your account has been hacked, you have now deleted the account and if they continue ask for evidence to be provided of the IP address used to access the account. You can then show it's not your IP address.

I had similar issues with them, in the end I emailed and told them I had revoked their implied rights of access to my property unless they obtained a court issued warrant to enter my address, including the front garden of the address. Never heard anything since and that was 6 years back

Only now am I having to entertain this pointless tax because my business has a TV. Really annoys me that we even need it.

countrysidelife2024 · 26/06/2024 09:20

has he been watching Live? as it only counts if the iplayer is playing LIVE.

People make that mistake so often, you ONLY need a licence IF you are watching at the same time as it is being broadcast on tv ( LIVE)

Ahh that's frustrating. I'd forgotten they like to charge a larger monthly cost to pay the first year licence quickly and then drop the monthly amount and that pays towards the next year's licence too. We always save and pay annually to avoid that.

I suppose if your exH is being reasonable he'd pay for he licence for 1 year, otherwise if you're not on great terms I guess he would refuse and you might have a small legal battle to get him to pay up. Would it be worth it though? Time effort and cost of that? Emotional toll on an already stressed relationship? Probably not.

It's live or bbc services which includes iplayer

@letthegamesbeginagain 🤣🤣🤣I gather you're not to upset about him having moved out!!

I don't understand all the ins & outs of the licensing, but I'd just call the customer services (from a withheld number) & tell them the situation with DH moving out & you not watching live TV or iplayer & ask them what you need to do as you are not going to buy a licence. (See if there's anything you need to do)

then if you've done what they say, tell the money chasers to fuck off or you'll be reporting them to the police for harassment.

keep notes.

This used to be true but they changed it a long while ago

There's no customer service number. No communucatioin, the website just takes you to a link to pay.

They are bullies.

Normally it's the postal address that is licensed AFAIK therefore if ex had a TV licence you can write and say that it was used at this address and give his address and say that it was licenced.
But it may be worth checking with someone as I am not totally sure

What about when you log in to your account when you are staying away somewhere in the UK? You don't need a new licence just because you're at a different address!

Yes, they ARE bullies.

i wouldn't pay. Dont let their bullying work. They can fuck off & chase twat face.

if you can't get any other communication (live chat? Etc) with them I'd just reply via email or snail mail telling them to contact him.

Dont let their bullying win!

Bargain Hunt? Christ, no wonder he’s an ex.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes they can pursue you because you did use iPlayer. I know you didn’t, and that you didn’t give him permission, but as he knew your password then that was tacit permission. Bit like giving your debit card and PIN to someone who then clears your account out - the bank wouldn’t refund it due to gross negligence. And you’re right you can’t stop the licence after a month - I think it’s actually six months minimum but they take more money up front. So unfortunately the best/cheapest outcome for you is probably to just buy the licence.

I had this last year, I used iplayer to make my partner watch luther before the movie 😂 .. Have a look through the terms/payment options on the website... I received the email to say you've been using iplayer you need to pay for a tv licence, I'm pretty sure there was the option to pay either monthly, quarterly, whole year... I think I chose quarterly and then cancelled after 2 months once I had finished and they refunded me for the month I hadn't used.

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 09:44

I've asked to contact them and explain and he's sent something through a contact form all cocky about how they can't chase the ip address etc? gah

They can't see if you've got iPlayer, Netflix or other online accounts. That would be more access than even the Police have get a grip and stop being so paranoid.

Rude much?!!
