Hassled by tv licence people

I don't have a tv licence because I don't watch live tv or iplayer.

Ex husband moved out and took the tv licence with him.

He then proceeded to watch player on my account in his house rather than his own.

Now I'm getting letters threatening me saying i have to buy a licence.

I literally haven't watched anything and I've told him to log out of my iplayer. What now?

Don't get into a story about your ex husband.
Tell them you don't watch live TV, you don't watch iPlayer, your account, that is unused, may have been hacked and you have changed the password (or delete the account).
If they turn up at your door, say nothing and shut the door.

fluffiphlox · 26/06/2024 12:04

What have you got against buying a TV licence? It funds the BBC which you watch on iPlayer.

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 12:07

I'll try and call them in a bit, thanks all.

I already pay for Disney plus , Netflix and itvx for DD because it has all the historic Dr Who's on it. I'm not paying for a tv licence there isn't anything we want to watch.

x2boys · 26/06/2024 12:17

But she's not using it so she doesn't have to pay
Its like me paying to shop at Tesco ,even though I never shop there .

This is the person you need to contact

greencartbluecart · 26/06/2024 12:37

Any licence is tied to a house not an account - they think it's being used at your house because they link the account to your house

You do need to get you iplayer account disabled as it's the password has been stolen ?

I don't watch iplayer so why would I pay for it? Do you buy things you don't use? Seems a bit pointless of you.

@fluffiphlox can you come back when you've read the thread properly please? You'll then be able to note that the person whose been watching the player account HAS A TV LICENCE IN THE HOUSE ITS BEING WATCHED IN

That's a really good point. Ring them and tell them it was used in a property with a tv licence. Update us please. I hope it gets resolved.

GrinAndBeerIt · 26/06/2024 12:46

I've never had a licence and I watch iPlayer etc, along with having IPTV.
A man came round one day around ten years ago. He was told to fuck off and the door closed in his face.
I just fill a form out on the licence website saying I don't need a licence.
They've never bothered me since.
Just fill the form out online and don't enter into a dialogue with them, even if they turn up at your door.

GasPanic · 26/06/2024 12:49

Can you email the BBC and get them to close the account ?

That way if you don't have an iplayer account linked to the address you can't be accused of watching it at that address ?

letthegamesbeginagain · 26/06/2024 12:51

So I've just called them on 0300 790 61144_*and told them the exact situation.

They've updated their records, I don't need a licence. All solved.

Would have done this earlier but didn't have time to call between work calls.

Thanks all.

Delete your iPlayer account. Tell them it was ExH watching at his address and as far as you know he has a TV licence. They can't do anything because the TV licence is for an address not for a person. Neither of you has broken the law. If they want to start investigating they'll see the IP address and it won't be from your device.

fluffiphlox · 26/06/2024 13:46

OK so I got the wrong end of the stick. Mea culpa.

Ihaveausername · 26/06/2024 13:59

Have you filled out the form online to state that you don't use a TV?? My dd used to live at home and moved in to her own place. She never watched live TV. and filled out the declaration. She later bought a new TV for gaming and shortly after she received a very similar letter. She didn't understand it as she had only watched iplayer once or twice here where we have a licence. She told them so and they went away.

Beautiful3 · 26/06/2024 16:52

That's a great update op, glad it's all been resolved.

Copperoliverbear · 26/06/2024 19:56

He probably done it on purpose

Hooray! I'd still delete your iPlayer account though!

I did delete it @JumpstartMondays 🙂

I think you could probably cast some aspersions in a well-worded letter about your husband fraudulently using your account, and see where that goes
