When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

A good friend of mine went to school with someone who used to be in a soap years ago. Anyway my friend said she was an absolute cow at school. Her nice girl imagine was uncovered thankfully when she tried to twist something against another celeb. Thankfully karma made sure she’s pretty obsolete now.

RP by any chance??

Savile. He had a go at my friend in his caravan at a big radio one roadshow that came to Wales. She was 14.

She came out screaming and shaking. Luckily my husband and friends were camping there for the sailing regatta as was she so they looked after her . Evil man.

Your poor friend. What a disgusting man he was. I'm lucky enough to have never encountered him, but I could always tell he was a wrong 'un when I watched Jim'll Fix It as a child. Just something about him. Gross creep.

Although, why can we talk about RB but not JS?

I think she might just have been worried about you.

It's common. If you've watched the Rob and Rylan grand tour Rylan explains how for work he's Rylan but at home he's Ross. It's a self protection mechanism and it feels like a sensible one to me.

I went to school with a famous mummy blogger. She always goes on about how she had no voice and was bullied at school. In fact she was very gobby and overbearing and made my friend's life an absolute misery through her meanness.

Is this GF?

I have heard similar stories about her being a cow.

Epidote · 25/06/2024 09:18

It is widely known that us common people age quicker than celebs.

And if I were famous I happily would said I was raised by wolfs. It always add embellishment to the background saying loud you are so special and cover a standard upbringing with a fantasy halo.
Brush off the daily work, the luck, the frustration etc.

An old post was saying H Willoughby and J Comer were nasty in school. So they can come across as sweet and nice!!

Oh no, I'm surprised about Jodie! Of course, actors can come across how they choose, and the person that you see on talk shows etc is really as much of a character as any other role they play, but everything I've ever heard about Jodie makes her sound really quite genuine. Holly, on the other hand, comes across as very syrupy and fake, so I'm not even slightly surprised that she'd been the school bully.

I taught a girl who's now a successful singer, albeit in a fairly niche genre.

I read an interview in which she claimed that she was in a minority as a working class girl in her private school. Apparently the teachers tried to force them into losing their regional accents.

Nonsense! Most of the teachers had stronger local accents than most of the pupils! The only discouragement would be from using certain terms in essays (eg "tret" instead of treated, or lend/borrow interchangeably).

And I remember her parents well. They were distinctly middle class. Parents and grandparents all university educated, in prestigious professions, and well-connected.

The irony is that she had a surname with strong links to the region. Its spelling could be seen as unfortunate to those who are not familiar with it. She's changed the sitting to a phonetic one. I don't blame her, except that the a certain irony that she's accusing the teachers of trying to suppress local distinctives rather than celebrate them, and that's sort of what she's done there...

@StormingNorman Olivia Coleman

She did both, went to Greshams and later worked as a cleaner when she was getting started in acting! Didn't Diana Spencer work as a cleaner for her sister??

It was beautiful. I would be so happy if they had very long very successful careers and never left our screens.

I believe she did, yes. (Diana.) Come to that, I worked as an office cleaner in the vac when I was at Oxford, which some people would clearly struggle to get their heads around. I needed the money, and the night time hours worked for me. And a very well-born friend at my college worked on the till at Sainsbury’s.

I'd definitely watch more of them. I liked that they didn't go down the normal celeb travelogue route it was really interesting as well as heartfelt!

I think they are very nice chaps individually, but together they are even lovelier than the sum of their parts. I would love to see more of them doing joint projects.

Conkersinautumn · 25/06/2024 10:16

I have a close friend who isn't even a particularly well known actor. A fair bit of "struggling" has been pasted over the past that I was there for. We are close, I don't say anything to contradict, it is part of an image. But sometimes there's that forgetting who you're talking to moment. (And I never wanted to be competitive but some of my struggles were more noticeable in school, so occasionally I've been disappointed at a lack of sensitivity to my life).

It is a bit me me me, BUT it's interesting to realise how things are when we look back. The private experience vs the perception of those around you. To be fair, you don't know if it was a struggle for someone at home if they appear to be comfortable, because so many have different markers for what was a luxury. I didn't holiday abroad, my friend DID (but visiting family, so hardly the holidays other friends were on).

Conkersinautumn · 25/06/2024 10:19

Funny the Rob/ Rylan one came up. My husband went to school with one and has now moderated his opinion of him. He's realised that he (not being close) had just made assumptions based on the general nature of the school and being young then and not being more aware of others lives and experiences.

Those questioning Kelly brook's age - that does check out. She was on bb when I was doing my GCSE's aged 15 And she was only 18 - famously very young. That's why she wasn't very good probably. I'm now 40 so she will be around 43/44!

I agree. Kelly Brook is 44. She’s not older than that.

When Cliff Richard came to fame as a young man, my mother swore blind he was the same age as her.
As time moved on he seemed to lose about 5 years off his age 😆😆

Did she go to school with him? My nan always said she was in primary school class with him and his name was something else.

I went to school with a footballer who plays for the Scotland national team. He was pretty quiet and seems to keep his head down now and just get on with his job but I don't enjoy hearing all the commentators talking about how he's a veteran and one of the oldest players on the team these days!
