Has anyone watched this on Netflix?

It's about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

There's so much wrong with it I don't even know where to start. They get paid virtually nothing but are required to completely commit (because the role is a privilege), are held to unrealistic beauty and weight standards, ruin their hips and feet by the time they are in their early twenties, the list goes on.

It shows how backwards the USA are as a country in terms of their treatment of women that they think this is OK.

Thanks for sharing, but Times has a paywall

It let me read for free!

Brief summary...
She describes it like being in a relationship that you aren't enjoying but can't leave.

She has now moved to New York, and hopes to audition for the Rockettes

I've just finished this. I was completely fascinated by Reese and her puritanical christianity coupled with incredibly sexy dancing. Also, her pudding faced fiance, there seemed to be absolutely no connection there whatsoever.

I was also really interested in Caroline and Anna Kate. Caroline seemed so switched on and yet there she was, recovering from both hip and foot surgery and coaching her sister to get into the DCC.

I loved Kelsey and her boyfriend, they seemed really great together.

No dreams, no job, no goals but it's OK cos a Dallas Cheerleader slid into his DM's.

Her baby voice is a bit weird though. She forgets to do it at points and her normal voice is much nicer.

Kelli was so unsubtle "he's not what I expected".

I've noticed some Christian fundamentalist women speak like that. The Duggar mum and one of the Bates women. A soft spoken baby voice.

OrchardDoor · 04/06/2025 17:42

I see someone else mentioned the fundy baby voice now I've read the whole thread. Im only watching it now but I'm a year behind everyone else!

Isn't there a new series soon?

So my sil who is amercian explained this.

In texas / bible belt this is cultural thing. its considered a real status symbol to marry the first boy who kissed you or courted you. Its a badge of honour.
Second boyfriends are okayy if it was your highschool sweetheart but if you date a few different people even if you dont have sex you are considered "damaged goods" (nice...
😑 )

I did notice that Kelli praised Reece for being engaged to her first boyfriend.
It's a shame. She definitely would have benefitted from kissing a few frogs before meeting someone better. One day she'll realise if she hasn't already. He seems to specialise in pulling faces and sticking his tongue out.

Me too, I have never seen anything quite like this that is actually real!

OrchardDoor · 05/06/2025 07:47

I agree that Kelsey's fiancé Nate is much better than Reece's.

Loopytiles · 05/06/2025 07:58

Looking forward to and dreading this in equal measure!

For me the unnecessary additional injury risk with some of the moves, eg Caroline, seems as bad as the crazy schedule of exercise, financial costs for the hair/make up/travel etc, massive manual of rules about everything.

I guess it’s all part of the same thing - suppression of individuality, objectification, obligation. With lots of pressure to be grateful, perky, tell everyone how lovely it all is. Messed up.

Nate was a bit ‘Ken doll’ though. And that proposal set up was awful.

I much preferred his personality to Reece's bf.

Oh Reece’s boyfriend was in a category of his own!

It feels risky they don't have "understudies." Maybe they just perform with less people if someone gets sick or injured.

That poor girl being berated for asking where her tree decoration was. She was only wondering where it was. Not complaining

hby9628 · 05/06/2025 15:14

Oh I love this show. It’s harsh but fascinating. Can’t wait for another series

OrchardDoor · 05/06/2025 15:41

Re the inappropriate touching of Sophy, Kelli said the Arlington Police determined a crime wasn't committed. They didn't say that though. They said there was not enough evidence to prosecute. I thought it was unfair on Sophy to phrase it like that.
