Interesting thread just popped up in AIBU regarding Starmer’s commitment to funding Ukraine……

MagicFox · 11/07/2024 08:47

Is it the one about liking Keir?

Is it the one about liking Keir?

No it’s literally about the commitment to multi-year funding of Ukraine.

WinterMorn · 11/07/2024 08:57

There are some real agitators on there as well, repeating asking the same question.

MagicFox · 11/07/2024 09:03

Ah I've found it! Good on those of you fighting the good fight - it's exhausting

There are some real gems on there as well. Hamstersarse is a particularly good one.

PerkingFaintly · 11/07/2024 09:36

Oh I've always thought the UK's many family ties to India is a plus. As far as I can see, it hasn't been making either country a client of the other, but might form a good basis for talking even when we disagree.

That might be in my imagination though.

I haven't looked at that thread, but recognise that name. That poster is a long-time contrarian. If you say black, they will say white, just for the hell of it. They brag about doing things to wind up their neighbours, just because.

They might genuinely believe things, but they make clear they've reached those positions by plumping for contrarian sources as a matter of principle.

Very much, "I was going to vote X, but the bloke in the carpark annoyed me and he's voting X, so I will vote Y."

I always think about this sort of thing: "Mm, OK, it's your own future you're voting for here, but you crack on and let others push you around so easily..."

Anyway, there is never any point arguing directly with them, because disagreement is what they feed on.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 11/07/2024 10:24

That thread is rather encouraging - quite a few different posters and almost all pro-funding Ukraine's fight, in the comments. The poll comes out a bit differently but I suspect some of the anti-funders are not good-faith posters.

prettybird · 11/07/2024 10:31

I use MN on the app so I can't vote in the poll Hmm

Igotjelly · 11/07/2024 10:35

With the NATO summit in the headlines we can expect lots of less than genuine engagement I expect.

I notice X keeps telling me that WWIII and Bidenisawarcriminal are trending. Bollocks, each has about 15k tweets (fucking Harry Kane has 147k!)

I use the app too (which also means you can't 'thank' people for posts which is a bit annoying) but you can sign in on the website, I just did and voted.
It currently stands at 56% YABU for disputing the need to support Ukraine vs
44% YANBU for questioning the funding.

Ive posted this on the other thread, but things are hotting up:

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/07/11/politics/us-germany-foiled-russian-assassination-plot/index.html

US intelligence discovered earlier this year that the Russian government planned to assassinate the chief executive of a powerful German arms manufacturer that has been producing artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine, according to five US and western officials familiar with the episode.
The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort, these sources said. The plan to kill Armin Papperger, a white-haired goliath who has led the German manufacturing charge in support of Kyiv, was the most mature.
When the Americans learned of the effort, they informed Germany, whose security services were then able to protect Papperger and foil the plot. A high-level German government official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-july-10-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian First Deputy Defense Minister Lieutenant General Ivan Havrylyuk stressed that robust Western security assistance will be crucial for Ukraine's ability to contest and seize the battlefield initiative. Havrylyuk also challenged the notion that Russian forces will be able to indefinitely sustain the consistent gradual creeping advances that support Russian President Vladimir Putin's theory of victory for winning a war of attrition in Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian forces are already attempting to contest the battlefield initiative in limited and localized counterattacks at the tactical level — emphasizing that the current state of grinding positional warfare along the frontline is not an indefinitely stable one.
  • Havrylyuk assessed that Russia will face medium- to long-term economic and equipment challenges that will impede the Russian military's ability to indefinitely retain the theater-wide initiative, sustain consistent offensive pressure that results in gradual creeping advances, and win a war of attrition.
  • Putin's articulated theory of a slow, grinding victory in Ukraine is notably premised on accepting continuously high casualty rates, as exemplified by reported Russian losses accrued during two recent offensive efforts.
  • NATO allies reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine and announced new security assistance packages for the Ukrainian war effort at the NATO summit in Washington, DC on July 9 and 10.
  • Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev reaffirmed that Russia would not accept or uphold any negotiated peace settlements with Kyiv short of Ukrainian capitulation, the destruction of the entire Ukrainian state, and the full occupation of Ukraine.
  • Servicemembers of a Russian motorized rifle regiment that was previously implicated in the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) in late May 2024 reportedly executed two Ukrainian POWs in the same area in western Zaporizhia Oblast in June 2024.
  • Select US military bases in Europe have instituted increased alert levels in response to intensified Russian sabotage and hybrid operations against NATO allies over the past several months.
  • Russian forces recently advanced in Vovchansk, near Kreminna, and near Toretsk.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed on July 10 that the Russian military trained the first batch of Moscow Military District (MMD) counter-drone instructors at the Alabino training ground in Moscow Oblast.

No UK Ministry of Defence update today but I am loving the new UK secretary of state for Defence John Healey. He has jumped straight into Ukraine and put it front and centre. He gets it.
