2 weeks to go. Or rather, still 2 weeks to go...😫

Is anyone else just really fed up to the back teeth of all this now?

Yes, it’s getting very sordid and grubby now. Even given how sordid and grubby the government has been.

"Our mate Phil" suggested that if the Tories could have the election today, they'd jump at the chance.

There is nothing good for them in the next two weeks.

Whilst the campaign wangs on...

The Shit List rises.

Prison governors have been warned that jails will be so overcrowded by the second week of July that they will struggle to accept any more inmates, plunging an incoming government into an immediate crisis.
The heads of jails in England and Wales were informed by HM Prison and Probation Serviceofficials earlier this month that data pointed to an “operational capacity breaking point” only days after the 4 July general election.

The development signals a significant logistical headache for an incoming justice secretary. It is expected to trigger Operation Early Dawn, a crisis measure that allows offenders to be housed in police cells when jails are full, while other measures can prompt magistrates courts to delay cases"

This is fucking atrocious.

A functioning government requires a functioning legal system.

Who the hell wants to inherit this madness - everything is broken.

Maybe that's why Rishi called it? 🤔He knew this was coming

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2024 15:36

They've had warning after warning about the legal system - the lack of courts, judges, barristers, prison places etc etc.
I am furious that it has been left to drift to this stage. Its fundemental to the country.

Notonthestairs · 20/06/2024 15:37

And thsts before we get to healthcare, water, education etc.

Weird thing is, even rich people need a functioning legal system. Even if it only works for them.

I guess once you bake contempt for the law into your political cake, you really aren't seeing straight anymore.

CassieMaddox · 20/06/2024 15:42

Ooh! I wonder if Rishi is like one of those match throwing referees and is trying to make a shed load of money by losing his seat after putting a bet on in 2021!

I think the UK has managed to break political betting now. Certainly if I were William Hill/BetFred/PaddyPower/Bet365 etc etc I would be voiding any bets around this election now. And I would know who to blame for the overheads.

Excl: Here's what happens if you scrape Betfair data for bets on a July election.

This graph cuts off at the end of 21 May, the day before Sunak announced the election.

There's a flood of bets that day - before Rishi formally told the cabinet and stood in Downing Street.

Just how many SpAds do they employ??

I’m sure its a coincidence @DuncinToffee 🤨

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2024 16:59

It tipped off the Labour Party Grin

From my Labour read on 26 May:

“A sudden surge in activity on the betting markets sealed McSweeney’s conviction that a July poll would be called imminently.”

We knew because they started letting loads out early remember?
Granted they hid the headline there...

They should do it the Swedish way. Prison by appointment. Only dangerous people go straight to jail. Others get sent home until space is available and then they have to present themselves and serve their sentence.

I think I posted a few months ago about how they could free up quite a lot of female prison spaces if they valued incarcerating only violent and dangerous criminals.

user8800 · 20/06/2024 17:29

Labour just have to keep quiet and let the tories destroy themselves

placemats · 20/06/2024 17:31

Checking in. Watching the match at the same time. Missing Luke Shaw, but England are off to a great start.

Sunak should have called the election earlier. If he manages to keep his seat, he'll resign as leader and possibly trigger the first by-election.

But obviously I wouldn't bet on that 🤭

bombastix · 20/06/2024 17:55

The justice system is one thing that is broken; this point has been coming for years. There are lots of other broken public services. Councils will go bust. Some universities too. And if the Conservatives go on about the complete freedom Labour have, they might like to remember the total trashing of the constitution and the law that has occurred in the last five years. They’ve broken it and now only just realise that an incoming left wing government may use what they have done. Previous Tory governments knew not to because of the potential to abuse power. Well that ship sailed a long time ago. We have a government that said it would break international law. A government which passed a bill that did not meet the requirements of the ECHR. Maybe Starmer will have true reverence for the old systems, but he will arrive with a huge majority and new precedents created by this Tory government to act freely. If you see a Tory voter who is a bit worried about a powerful Labour government, do thank them for their efforts to greatly expand what is legally possible by making Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak PM.

placemats · 20/06/2024 18:00

Same old story. The Tories mess things up and expect others to clear up after them.

For those in Clacton, Farage won't help cleaning up. He'll be totally useless and not help at all.

Maybe reform winning a few seats is a good thing in the long run?

They'll be fucking useless and won't get elected again?
