Anybody else get really bothered by this?

Honestly it makes my skin crawl for some reason and that's ALL I can think about/ hear and it completely ruins whatever I'm watching.
Some examples - Suranne Jones in dr foster
Lemon in Bullet Train
The sister in Insomnia

Arghhhh am I the only one who picks up on it ?

Daphne in Frasier. Dreadful.

Emily in Friends. Not sure why they made her speak in such a ridiculous accent. Her own would have been much better.

I thought that was Helen Baxendale's real accent as Emily! Who knew

UsernameRedacted · 14/06/2024 22:38

Brad Pitt, some awful film he did with Harrison Ford

GreenSmithing · 14/06/2024 22:38

I've never heard a non-Birmingham actor manage a Brummie accent. In order to manage the tone shifts they speak too slowly and tend to over exaggerate the vowel sounds. Bonus marks if they drop in regional words from the Black Country - which is a different accent - and annoy both sides by mixing them up.

Cillian Murphy is a good actor and he does an okay job in Peaky Blinders, but he still sounds like an actor 'doing' the accent.

Another one for Jane Leeves as Daphne in Frasier. Fucking awful Manchester accent. I am pretty sure she is just from the South East of England. Why did she not just have THAT accent? Confused (Like either a bit posh or estuary accent.)

Also Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing, but his accent in Gangs of New York was awful - (he did Irish.)

Also, whilst I like Line Of Duty, I HATE the way Martin Compston speaks in it. He is putting on an estuary accent (south east England,) and it sounds so fake and put on. I just hate it. Again, why could the character not just have been from Scotland/from Glasgow (like Martin is,) and had a Scottish/Glasgow accent? Adrian Dunbar and Vicky McClure do their own accents!

Yes to Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins! Awful! Should never have been remade. Julie Andrews accent/voice is exquisite ...

And whilst I love Renee Zellwegger, and did quite enjoy the Bridget Jones films, I thought Renee's British/English accent was a bit OTT, sounded quite put on, and was way too 'posh.' Why did they not use a British/English actress? Same with anyone really. Why not use an actor or actress who has the accent of any particular given role?!

I also hated the way Helen Baxendale spoke in Friends. Why did she have to put on that stupid fake 'posh' accent?!

I agree with a pp that James Marsters as Spike in Buffy was very good! Smile I was stunned when I found out he was American and not British/English. (I was obsessed with Buffy!!!) Grin

ALSO, Gillian Anderson did a good American accent. I didn't know she was British/English til about 10 years ago. All through the X-Files (which I was obsessed with too,) I thought she was American.

East Anglian accents are routinely murdered by actors. They invariably sound like Long John Silver with a West Country accent - totally different from, say, a Norfolk accent.

Once I heard an actor manage a Norfolk accent which I thought was good. That was Robert Powell, not on TV or in a film, but on the stage.

I couldn't watch Canoe Man. The accents were so painful and just wrong.

Ooh I haven't seen this yet, that's my regional dialect though so I will definitely hear all of the mispronunciations.

Derek Thompson (the guy who played Charlie in Casualty) was in the last series of Blue Lights trying to be from Northern Ireland and it was so bad it was comedic

His dreadful acting in casualty was a running joke in my family, growing up. Can't believe they let him attempt an NI accent

Bearpawk · 14/06/2024 22:56

Oh my god just googled and Derek Thompson is actually N Irish!!! Maybe that's why he was so wooden as Charlie all those years

On the good side….Nicola Walker’s Halifax accent in ‘Last Tango in Halifax’ is spot on. I’m from Halifax, can pinpoint accents down to the surrounding village and she was perfect. I was stunned when I read that she’s from Cambridge.

Bearpawk · 14/06/2024 22:57

I also remember a particular family in hollyoaks when I was a teen where they had a Scottish dad, northern sounding daughter, a cockney boy and a posh southern sounding boy 😂

@RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue She is, I believe. She was born in Chicago and at least partly gew up there. English boarding school, and a family home in London as well from what I remember - but her American voice is as authentic as her English one!

alloutofcareunits · 14/06/2024 23:19

Brenda Blethyn's accent in Vera, I'm from near Newcastle, worked in South Shields, covered all of Northumberland for work and have no idea which one she's supposed to be doing but it's dreadful! Just saying "eeeee pet!" Doesn't make a Geordie or Northumbrian accent

Ah ha, that explains it then! Like John Barrowman. Kinda half Scottish/half American and can do both accents well. Smile

I saw a bad accent TV countdown show and I'm sure Dick Van Dyke won the worst accent for Mary Poppins and his dreadful cockney accent attempt.

This was my worst thought. It was worse than when I attempt a Welsh accent and it ends up in some awful India piss take. Embarrassing on all levels.

ToxicChristmas · 14/06/2024 23:36

The Irish accents in the film Far and Away. Holy shit they were terrible.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 14/06/2024 23:36

First not worst 😂

RosePetalsRose · 14/06/2024 23:37

Green Street. Can't remember characters name. But absolutely terrible cockney accent.

Barry Keoghan in Saltburn . Dreadful film , dreadful accent 🤷🏻‍♀️

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 14/06/2024 23:45

Agree with a pp about Brenda Blethyn in Vera. Love her but her accent is terrible!

haddockfortea · 14/06/2024 23:46

No-one's mentioned EastEnders yet...

Sean Connery.
Hunt for Red October- plays a Russian, has a Scottish accent.
Highlander- plays a Spaniard, who was born in Egypt, has a Scottish accent.
The Untouchables-plays sn Irish man, has a Scottish accent.

Yeah, but that's Sean Connery - he simply didn't pretend to do accents.

MrsDeltaB · 14/06/2024 23:52

Quite recent but IF. Fiona Shaw is an Irish/English accented Lady. Portraying an American grandma.

Not against her as a whole but the accent wasn't good. No American actress to play?

ErrolTheDragon · 14/06/2024 23:53

Steven Robertson doing some sort of Lancashire in one series of The Bay, his Shetland Accent kept breaking through.

Mel Gibson in Braveheart

This ! Worst Scottish accent ever !
