Anybody else get really bothered by this?

Honestly it makes my skin crawl for some reason and that's ALL I can think about/ hear and it completely ruins whatever I'm watching.
Some examples - Suranne Jones in dr foster
Lemon in Bullet Train
The sister in Insomnia

Arghhhh am I the only one who picks up on it ?

Even Jane Leeves' accent was tripe. Meant to be from Manchester. John Mahoney's was better when he imitated her moaning about her hair. But I think he was originally from NW England.

Oh yes, this wins.

Was it deliberate? Her brother had a cockney accent? Were they sending themselves up? As in daphne's family have British accents. Two different accents!

Oh god yeah we didn’t even get half way through Bullet Train. Taylor-Johnson’s accent was awful.

Chris Hemsworth in that Snow White film comes to mind. I think he was supposed to be Scottish.

Taylor-Johnson's attempt at a Scottish accent in Outlaw King was horrendous too.

Daphne in Frasier. Dreadful.

Emily in Friends. Not sure why they made her speak in such a ridiculous accent. Her own would have been much better.

Alexander Dreyman / Uhtred in The Last Kingdom - not sure if it was meant to be a Northumbrian accent but it sounded so fake.

Davros · 14/06/2024 21:32

James MacEvoy in Starter For Ten trying to do Essex. Dreadful

Hedjwitch · 14/06/2024 21:34

Mel Gibson in Braveheart

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 14/06/2024 21:36

Russel Crowe in Robin Hood ffs!

WhatnowMrs · 14/06/2024 21:39

Tom Conti in Shirley Valentine - such a disappointment!

BigFatSoberLife · 14/06/2024 21:41

As an irishwoman, I have to agree with the pp who said fake Irish accents are 🤢

Sons of Anarchy when they supposedly visit Belfast is a mix of completely hilarious and deeply distressing for the accents and also the bits which were clearly filmed in LA dressed up to look how they think belfast does. I did think, there's an actual Scottish actor in that show. Did he never think to tell them 😆?

mnahmnah · 14/06/2024 21:52

Brad Pitt’s Austrian accent in 7 Years in Tibet. Bloody awful.

BiscuityBoyle · 14/06/2024 22:03

Everyone in Broadchurch. So many people said how brilliant it was but I honestly couldn’t get past the first ten minutes as the accents were so bad.

bluecomputerscreen · 14/06/2024 22:04

everyone in death and other details.
awful

ConsuelaHammock · 14/06/2024 22:05

The Irish accents in Sons of Anarchy. Embarrassingly dreadful!

Yes apparently that was supposed to be the joke.

I don’t think Jane Leeves accent was that bad though, I know people who sound like that for real.

StrawPony · 14/06/2024 22:11

I think the haunting of Bly manor has to be top for terrible accents. I would say that generally Americans find British accents impossible, I guess they don’t have much exposure to them, whereas we have loads of exposure to different American accents through TV/film. Even a good English accent by an American isn’t quite right, the bloke who played Dexter did an English accent on Netflix’s safe. It was good in that it totally sounded English but it wasn’t consistent as it slipped between sounded quite well to do and suddenly a bit common.

Alfie Allen's Russian accent (and use of actual Russian) in a John Wick

My wife is from a former Soviet republic and years ago, wanted to watch the Rambo film, which is set in Afghanistan. She was laughing her head off a lot and explained that one baddie was actually Russian, but another was really terrible at speaking Russian, both pronunciation and accent.

BebbanburgIsMine · 14/06/2024 22:14

@AlexTurnersmicrophone

Akexander himself stated that Uhtred's accent was unique, and one he made up specially.

Having no real home of his own, Uhtred's accent is meant to be a mix of Northumbrian, Saxon and Dane.

I love it!

Gerard Butler in P.S. I love you.

Agreed- love the film, but that accent makes me wince!

StasisMom · 14/06/2024 22:15

I'm not a scouser although live not far away, I thought Martin Freeman's in the Responder was pretty good... And I've read others agree.

PuppyMonkey · 14/06/2024 22:17

I come from Nottingham and can confirm we don’t speak like Kevin Costner. Grin

Happinessischeeseontoast · 14/06/2024 22:22

Martin Freeman's accent and mannerisms were very accurate in The Responder...whether you like the accent or not it another matter! 😁

Daphne from Fraser was terrible I agree.

I thought Dominic West did a good job when I watched The Wire at the time. I hadn't known that he or Idris Elba were British until after. Not sure whether that would still be the case, I watched it a good while ago now.

Brad Pitt in Snatch. Or Lock, Stock ..the one where he played a traveller.

Derek Thompson (the guy who played Charlie in Casualty) was in the last series of Blue Lights trying to be from Northern Ireland and it was so bad it was comedic

Derek Thompson is from Belfast so I think that is his natural accent.

Sittingonthefence83 · 14/06/2024 22:33

I hear people saying she was great but I thought Renée Zellweger's accent in Bridget Jones was awful and way too posh!

mdinbc · 14/06/2024 22:34

I'm not from UK, so can't comment on most, but mark Ruffalo in All The Light We Cannot See is American, playing a Frenchman, but with a British accent. Why?
