Is this inappropriate to wear in an office?

I bought this top and I love it. I’m going to wear it in with a blazer anyway. But I’m assuming if it gets too hot is it inappropriate?

Armpits in the office? No thanks.
I wouldn’t find it appropriate for a man to wear a vest or a sleeveless top in the office either. It’s nothing to do with dressing like a 90s secretary I just don’t want to see that much flesh at work.

They really aren't! Just because they're more popular doesn't mean employers feel they're OK to be on display either internally or customer facing.

I work in the office of a national shop chain, seeing customers really only when passing through.

We are not allowed to show tattoos at work. If you have them anywhere on your arms its long sleeves or get sent home. They take it very seriously.

edit to add - no vest tops, backless tops or low slung trousers/crop tops either.

Perhaps pair it with a sharp cap sleeved blouse/shirt for a bit more coverage, whilst still keeping professionally cool (stylish) and cool (temperature).

If you have slim toned arms with lovely smooth skin why not.
If you have flabby arms and lumpy skin like me, why draw attention to it?

Treestumpp · 14/06/2024 19:49

@Catnipcupcakes nice to hear some places are still keeping standards.

skinnyoptionsonly · 14/06/2024 19:53

It looks like an apron

annoyance888 · 14/06/2024 19:54

Would a cute plain slim fitting white t shirt look ok under

AuntieJoyce · 14/06/2024 17:28

I like it. I would wear it in summer if the temperature was warm in the office no problem. Our office code is smart casual.

I find it really hard to see this as smart casual

piscofrisco · 14/06/2024 19:55

It would be fine in my office if it was very hot outside. But we have a very informal office .

It's not about whether it is flattering it's about whether it is appropriate

Eminybob · 14/06/2024 20:07

I like the back, I wouldn't wear it to work but there are people in my office who wear worse (rightly it wrongly)

The front looks like a butchers apron.

@Treestumpp We used to have a uniform (calf length skirt, shirt blouse and tights in all weathers) until about five years ago. Now we just get lanyards!

willWillSmithsmith · 14/06/2024 20:09

Well no one can say if it’s appropriate as we don’t know what everyone else tends to wear. What industry are you in? Are you in an insurance company or a trendy young start-up etc? In my last office job I wouldn’t have been allowed to wear it but in a previous job I would have.

SmileyClare · 14/06/2024 20:09

It depends entirely on the industry you work in and the dress code of your particular office.

Some offices will have a relaxed casual dress code, some require business/ corporate attire.

You should have a dress code in your contract of employment but as a rule of thumb- just take your lead from your colleagues.

I do think the top is too unstructured and loose fitting to look good under a smart jacket.

What are fat people allowed to wear then? Should we cover ourselves from head to toe in blouses and crinoline skirts so as not to offend anyone with the horror of our lumpen bodies?

gardenmusic · 14/06/2024 20:14

Not if you want to be taken seriously - it's not professional work wear.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 14/06/2024 20:17

I work in a very liberal office. One of my colleagues once wore a fish net top with nipple pasties under (no boobs to worry about). Jeans and trainers fine etc.

But personally I would not feel comfortable wearing this. I would find it uncomfortable having meetings with colleagues that showed loads of skin and in return I would not want to make colleagues and customers uncomfortable either. As a woman you would get men gawping too, as much as it shouldn’t be the case.

It’s not about offending anyone, more about dressing in a flattering manner.
I try and cover the bits I’m not happy with and show off the bits that are nice.
Don’t you want to look as good as possible?

xyz111 · 14/06/2024 20:29

Would have been fine in my office but I worked for a fashion brand

skyfalldown · 14/06/2024 20:34

it's fine, I wear sleeveless tops to my office, but then it is really casual

WLAH · 14/06/2024 20:37

No shoulders on view in our office

In my scientific world (we are all professionals) no one would bat an eye lid at this top.
It really depends on your work environment.

Tistheseason17 · 14/06/2024 20:48

It's fine.
It's got thick straps. If you can do your job, that's more important 👌

Laura36TTC · 14/06/2024 20:51

Yes

ZoomDoomZoom · 14/06/2024 20:53

It's more of a going out top with mates or for a date rather than to the office unless you want to make moves on a colleague? Too much skin on show for a professional setting. I work with young people so that top would inappropriate & my boss would throw a t shirt at me to put on underneath.
