Is this inappropriate to wear in an office?

I bought this top and I love it. I’m going to wear it in with a blazer anyway. But I’m assuming if it gets too hot is it inappropriate?

Pre covid when I had to wear work clothes, I would have worn a top like that with a cardigan and smart slim trousers. My office was always cold with the air con though so I never had to take the cardi off until I went outside 🤣

I wouldn’t wear it to work without a cardi but there are some places where it is ok!

buma · 14/06/2024 17:29

I think it's totally fine to wear that to the office! It's only showing a bit of back! If the front is low cut then different story, but that's absolutely fine.

I see people in less than that every day! Seen a few in tiny little skirts, tops with their boobs out.

DisforDarkChocolate · 14/06/2024 17:29

I thinks it's perfectly acceptable for a lot of offices.

Only on MN are women expected to dress like a 1990's secretary at work and in Phase Eight for all events.

ShowerOfShites · 14/06/2024 17:25

But women giving a shiny shit has.

Thankfully 🙏

But she does give a shiny shite and that's why shes asking. If not men, then it'll be bitchy women saying OMG have you seen her top.

As a PP said, if you're asking the question, you already know the answer.

Carota · 14/06/2024 17:30

Under a crisp white shirt?

if you on the slimmer side, with small boobs you are more likely to be able to pull it off at work.

It's Marks and Sparks (only calling them that to avoid clickthroughs from using the initials). 98% of their 'workwear' is completely unacceptable in professional workplaces.

How so? They sell plenty of perfectly normal looking trousers, blouses, jackets, tops etc.

They might not to be everyone's tastes or comply with subjective opinions on style/fashion, but I can't see how their 'office wear' is 'completely unacceptable in professional workplaces'.

But I think the OPs linked top is likely to be outside most offices specified or implied idea of acceptable workwear due to to the bare back and shoulders. But it would be fine under a jacket as long as you know you won't take it off.

LordSnot · 14/06/2024 17:31

If you have to ask, don't wear it.

BabyMomma2021 · 14/06/2024 17:36

Are shoulders unprofessional? I must have missed the memo!

It's 2024!

Personally I think it's fine!

LandedSentry · 14/06/2024 17:38

If you have to ask ….

MartyFunkhouser · 14/06/2024 17:42

I can’t see anything wrong with it 🤷‍♀️

It would look lovely on a slim figure with toned arms. Very unforgiving otherwise. My director wears stuff like this all the time. She’s in excellent shape, so I don’t blame her.

GuinnessBird · 14/06/2024 17:14

What does it look like from the front?

I think it’s fine from the front.

Ahhh... the M&S mullet top.

Business at the front, party at the back

Aallvtirin · 14/06/2024 17:45

It's not really my style but I don't think it's inappropriate for the office. My office is pretty laid back though.

Nowhere has the OP stated she's worried about 'getting the fellas talking' 🙄🙄

RubySloth · 14/06/2024 17:47

Looks fine to me, the front isn't revealing, so can't understand any negs

Hard agree.

OP, I work in an accountancy practice and that top would be absolutely fine. In fact I might get it myself.

I've seen some staff in so called business wear who look scruffy. I'd rather have someone sleeveless and smart, than sleeves and scruffy!

Orangello · 14/06/2024 17:50

Fine under a blazer. Otherwise no. My office is very casual but still no.

SugarWatermelonHigh · 14/06/2024 17:51

LoopyLooooo · 14/06/2024 17:25

I've just seen The rest of it....

Perhaps not too inappropriate but shapeless and baggy.

I don’t care what anyone thinks of the top in general. Because style is so subjective. I could think what you wear and love is hideous but I’m not wearing it so who gives a shit what I think of your clothes.

If I wear something baggy then I’ll pair it with a fitted item. I wouldn’t wear it how the model has worn it.

————

That aside. I find it hard to know what’s acceptable after covid. The office culture has changed and when I was in 5 days a week I almost stopped making much effort. Now I work 2 days and it’s actually nice to wear clothes I wouldn’t wear around the house.

DeedlessIndeed · 14/06/2024 17:52

I've not worked in an office where it's acceptable to have your shoulders out. There should be a dress code or policy though to clarify.

There will be more liberal places for sure, all down to the culture of your workplace.

AstonMartha · 14/06/2024 17:52

If men can’t handle an item of clothing then they have no business being allowed out in public @Treestumpp. I seriously hope that if you have sons you aren’t raising them to get over excited at women’s clothing and if you have daughters I hope that you aren’t raising them to give a fuck what men think.

I don’t even like the top!

My aim in life is to get all the fellas attention. Why else would any woman put effort into her appearance

OP posts:
Hotttchoc · 14/06/2024 17:52

Yes of course it's inappropriate

maw1681 · 14/06/2024 17:53

Yes it is I appropriate. Can you wear a plain t shirt underneath?

countvoncount · 14/06/2024 17:54

I wouldn't.
As a manager I wouldn't think anyone would want to see my back, shoulders or armpits
White base layer or shirt underneath would be fine, Im no frump but I'd feel far too exposed

Treestumpp · 14/06/2024 17:55

Well the majority of people are saying its inappropriate. What exactly was the OP asking anyway. Appropriate in what sense? We all know the question was does it leave too much skin on display.
