Do I need A&E for this?

Not sure how I got the cut, don't remember getting one!

Driving home earlier my leg felt a bit hot. In this exact area

Forgot about it and realised it was getting worse. Have had a proper look and there's a tiny cut. And the redness is spreading

The skin where the redness is, is hot to touch

I don't have to go to A&E, do I?

I don't have any temperature and feel fine

Just never known a simple cut to feel red hot!

Is the area round the cut, swollen and warm to touch?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/06/2024 21:51

Have you rung 111 to ask their advice? They’re probably better placed to help than randoms online!

Are you sure its not a bite? Whole knee area looks swollen to me.

SockQueen · 12/06/2024 21:51

Horsefly bite? They're vicious buggers

Suspiciousmind1 · 12/06/2024 21:52

What’s the cut? Perhaps a bite? Not sure on a and e but you should get it checked if the redness is spreading

HavfrueDenizKisi · 12/06/2024 21:52

Looks more like a sting or bite to me.

heyitisthegirls · 12/06/2024 21:52

Would I not know if a Horse fly or any other insect had bitten me though? I haven't actually left the house today other than two quick trips in the car

Looks like there are two incisions like a spider bite

Babycatsmummy · 12/06/2024 21:53

Definitely looks like a bite. I'd call 111 and ask for advice as it might be cellulitis. Make a mark round the edge and monitor it, see if it gets bigger x

Homebird8 · 12/06/2024 21:53

Draw a line around the red part so that you'll be able to see if it's expanding and if so how fast. And I'd ring 111 for advice.

HippyShopper · 12/06/2024 21:54

Hot and spreading redness needs medical attention . Draw round the edges of the redness with a biro so you and medics can see how much it is spreading .

heyitisthegirls · 12/06/2024 21:54

Close up of the cut. Surely a bite from an insect can't actually create a hole the size of a bit of rice?

If you’re feeling ok I would draw around it and see if the redness has spread in the morning. I’d also whack some savlon on it.

caveat: I’m not medical and have a tendency to opt for home care as a first option.

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 12/06/2024 21:54

I’d say 111 to see if anyone can see you Out of hours. Near me we have ‘urgent care’ attached to A&E so they streamline people that arrive - urgent/critical to A&E, minor injuries and illness to urgent care. If you call 111 they usually book you an appointment at urgent care.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 12/06/2024 21:55

Looks like a spider bite I had. Had no idea I'd done it unti it went like that. It went really manky and I ended up with cellulitis and had to have lots of strong antibiotics. But I wouldn't say it is an A&E job. I'd get an urgent GP appointment first thing.

Singleandproud · 12/06/2024 21:55

It's a bite and infected,
Clean the area with an alcohol wipe
Germalene it
Draw a circle around the red circle
Take a antihistamine and ibuprofen

I had the same and the infection went behind my knee cap or something and I couldnt really weight bear, ended up with antibiotics. I don't think it's an emergency so no A&E but an out of hours GP, minor injuries, or GPs tomorrow unless the red circle spreads even further as you are at a risk of sepsis like ay infection.

Baklavamama · 12/06/2024 21:56

Follow what @Singleandproud says to the letter and you’ll be sorted.

Darkflame · 12/06/2024 21:58

Try taking an antihistamine or painkillers and apply an ice pack for a while.

If it hasn't gone down by tomorrow or has gotten worse pop into a local pharmacy and get checked over. They should be able to advise.
In the meantime, if you come over feeling unwell - temperature, dizziness etc or the redness/swelling spreads further then call 111 or pop to A&E.
Try not to worry!

Singleandproud · 12/06/2024 22:01

Don't use an ice pack, use a warm compress if you want some relief. The heat from the infection is a localised immune response to kill any pathogens, your body knows what it's doing try not to work against it.

Hazelville · 12/06/2024 22:01

I’d get that looked at if it were me because you say it is hot. That’s usually a sign of infection and you probably need antibiotics. Call 111 and you might get an out of hours GP appointment.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2024 22:06

I’m very much a DIYer for this sort of stuff as far as is practical so would clean it, maybe some antiseptic cream and take an antihistamine. Draw a circle around the redness and reevaluate in the morning.

Noseybookworm · 13/06/2024 00:36

That looks like an infected bite OP. Call 111 and get an out of hours doctors appointment. You need antibiotics and it can spread very quickly and cause cellulitis which can be serious.

heyitisthegirls · 13/06/2024 09:43

In case anyone googles, I whacked something called Fucibet on it

Woke up to the redness and heat having vanished. And it's scabbed over nicely
