I love the way these Right thinkers encourage people 'back to work'. They could say ' your local job centre is here to help you. Consult one of our helpful advisers at your next compulsory appointment. Let's get Britain back to work". But no, because the point is to threaten, punish and demoralise those who are already near the point of no return. I'm surprised they're not suggesting cattle prods and chain gangs. Disgusting people, the lot of them. Vile, thriving on misery and perpetuating it.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 17/06/2024 16:03

This is confusing.

Have they already forgotten how well Angela's house, Keir's donkey and beers went?

Ah but did you know that Sir Keir is 61 years old!?

My personal views is that one grifter to another means Farage has a deeper sense of Trumps position than perhaps the media. After all, he knows all the tricks.

So his sudden interest in UK politics - almost a Damascene conversion - is impossible to read as anything other than a conclusion that - for Farage at least - the Trump well has run dry.

"Luckily" Sunak called the election with the precision timing of a Swiss watch, allowing Farage to weathercock without having to expend too much bullshit.

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2024 16:31

Trump is broke, not much use to a grifter

Yes although their foremost aim is to tell other people that they will punish, threaten and demoralise them

its not what they’re going to do FOR people. It’s all about what they’re going to do TO your (imaginary) feckless neighbour

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/17/boss-us-firm-uk-covid-contracts-accused-squandering-millions-on-jets-properties?

The previously little-known Chinese-American businessman’s fortune was transformed by the British taxpayer through 11 government contracts worth approximately £4.3bn for lateral flow tests (LFTs) made in China and sold by Innova. The government fast-tracked the company after its British representatives sent a direct email to Dominic Cummings, the chief adviser to the then prime minister, Boris Johnson, in July 2020. And, a Guardian investigation has found, the fast-tracking of Innova was supported by the then chancellor Rishi Sunak’s team at the Treasury.

Has he received an "honour" yet?

BestIsWest · 17/06/2024 17:16

I was just going to ask if anyone knows that Sir Keir is 61 years old (for the record so am I). He looks in good shape for it too. So are Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp while Brad Pitt will follow in December.
Farage is only 60 and Johnson 59.

Bloody hell. Keir looks way younger than either of them. And that means Johnson is my age and Farage only a little older. I suddenly feel very good about my (generally average) appearance…

Evenstar · 17/06/2024 17:28

They are all about DH and I’s ages, I would certainly think Keir Starmer was healthier and more mentally alert than either of the other two. I wouldn’t be able to do a demanding job like that due to health issues but DH would be more than capable.

Apparently they are trying to draw parallels with Joe Biden (who is 81) and Trump’s “Sleepy Joe” jibes 🙄

The last time Boozo the 🤡 was sighted someone asked if he had been living in the hedge behind him in the picture, I know who I would prefer as Prime Minister

Zonder · 17/06/2024 17:58

On the subject of Clacton I think NF genuinely wants to win. But I don't think he wants to do the job of MP so I suspect he will do it exactly as he did the job of MEP ie really badly. He had the lowest possible record of attendance as an MEP bar I think two others. He was on a fisheries committee that he never attended.

I suspect that's how he will do the job of MP, should he be successful.

Scruffily · 17/06/2024 18:00

Evenstar · 17/06/2024 16:07

Just seen this gem in the Mirror, I particularly like his suggestion that there could be work coaches and mentors to force people to go to work, still I suppose that could be a job for someone 😬 https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/remove-benefits-plan-reform-uk-33048293

I wish Kay Burley had focussed those questions on what happens to the families of people who don't take jobs and therefore get benefits withdrawn. It's easy enough for Reform's idiots to say of the adults "they should just take the jobs" but I would love to know what answer they have in relation to children who have no say in whether their parents take a job or not.

dontcallmelen · 17/06/2024 18:01

So agree, just more of hateful narrative that grows legs & runs if we aren’t careful.

You could well be correct @Zonder

If Farage drinks and smokes as much as his image tells us he does it's not too surprising he looks older than his years.

Sorry to ask this on here but is there a Euros 2024 thread @DuncinToffee ?

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2024 18:15

There were no Uk Tv cameras in committee sessions that Farage couldn't be bothered to attend when he was an MEP.

There are cameras and microphones in HoC.
Sadly, he'll be there.
Ready to whip things up with lies and uncosted soundbites.

I think he changed his mind about standing because much of the right of British politics were in denial about just how badly this election was going to go for the Conservatives.

Farage saw his opening- tiny rump Con party left, riven by schisms and factions, and quite a big part of the reason they lost so badly will be because Reform split the right wing vote.He was schmoozing the Cons at their conference last year, and that wasn't something completely new.

If you think the Conservative Party wouldn't elect a blustering workshy liar of a TV personality as it's Leader, I have 2 words for you.

Boris Johnson.

Let's suppose that the Tories merge with Reform after the GE and Farage becomes their leader.
Is he going to manage to win over enough of the centre ground electorate to win an election?

Or will as in this election it still be a case of anyone but the Tories?

I have a feeling that steady as she goes Starmer with a few successful policies and people feeling better about themselves would nullify Farage.

DuncinToffee · 17/06/2024 18:34

Larry for Leader

Larry the Cat

Time to launch my manifesto:

  1. Creation of a new meal between breakfast and brunch
  2. If it's not sunny on a bank holiday everyone gets a rollover until it is
  3. Legally declare that nostalgia isn't as good as it used to be
  4. Rename the Isle of Dogs (it's actually a peninsula)
  5. Rejoin the EU but let everyone who voted to leave pretend that we still have
  6. Creation of a new meal between brunch and lunch
