@user8800 exactly how I feel - I wanted to vote Labour but it feels like watering down in many areas. Also don't like the "just don't talk about it" side which seems to grow every week. I want debate and to not make the same mistakes with a red label on it. Will also be voting Lib Dem.
My fear is a Labour/Reform coalition, because nothing would get done. Starmer would talk around in circles and Farage would end up pushing his ideas more and making Starmer look like a pansy.

Labour/reform coalition vanishingly unlikely!

My prediction remains the same:
Tory wipeout, reform get some seats, NF becomes tory leader via enoblement a la DC or he wins in Clacton (possible)

These "new" reform torys lurch ever more to the right and - hopefully - become so toxic that they only win seats in places like Clacton and Grimsby (big leave vote areas).

Labour will not get a landslide next time. They may even end up in an LD/Labour coalition.

The country needs hope, aspiration, vision. Not just "don't worry, we aren't going to change anything".

Saying Europe is moving to the Right somewhat ignores the whole of Scandinavia who are wandering leftwards again...

My Swedish friend would disagree with you

user8800 · 16/06/2024 09:56

I'm gen x

I wouldn't describe myself as a moderate

That's not really what it said so I wasn't all that clear. It said Gen X has the broadest range of views, ie feet in every camp. More moderate than Boomers but less progressive than Gen Z and millennials.

There will always be outliers though! I'm very progressive with dashes of moderate but know plenty of people my age are the opposite.

The recent elections went back lefter. Not a word.

fabio12 · 16/06/2024 10:01

I don't like that they are using all the tools they used for Leave and people are still thinking Labour will win by a landslide...

An unpopular view, possibly, but I don't think super majorities are good for robust democracy.

Look at the damage De Pfeffle did with his 80 seat majority!

I'm actually scared what labour will do with the kind of majority that is being predicted :(

Notonthestairs · 16/06/2024 10:12

"It said Gen X has the broadest range of views, ie feet in every camp. More moderate than Boomers but less progressive than Gen Z and millennials. "

So we are more diverse and therefore difficult to market to.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:12

Yes.

Notonthestairs · 16/06/2024 10:13

Not sure the size of the majority makes that much difference after a certain point. Much depends on party discipline which the Conservatives didn't have.

Ah. Yes. But there's "left" and "left".
She's not feeling that hopeful.

Re: gen x. I know people who don't and have never voted. Maybe some of them voted leave? Some gen x send their kids/gcs to private schools, so that may impact their vote.
We gen Xers are a motley bunch:)

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:18

That was indeed the point!

user8800 · 16/06/2024 10:18

I agree with @fafabio12

Too much pussyfootimg around the shitshow that is brexshit

Time to make clear what a disaster it was...from DC calling the referendum to appease the right wing nutters in his party in the first place, to the Russian interference in our political process...

What a mess :(

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:19

But Gen X still tend more towards moderate and progressive viewpoints than Boomers and pre war babies. And, telling the Culture Wars just don't interest most of them.

Do you remember that vote in the HofC?
Ed Milliband played a blinder there!
Therese Coffey (alledgedly) physically attacking MPs to get them through the Aye door!?
Fascinatingly dreadful...

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:23

Talking of Gen Z. Oh dear, Suella. Oh dear.

The fracking vote? Yes that was a sign of the mess. Charles Walker saying that it was pitiful and an absolute disgrace.

Sweden has taken a big step back to its traditional left position. Which is centre left. Hard left is not the political home of Sweden.

fabio12 · 16/06/2024 10:30

I'm having a lot of brain fog this morning but if Labour win and need a prop and the choice is Tories or Reform for numbers from 2nd and 3rd...? Would they not have to choose between the two?

SNP
Lib Dems

They also get seats as well.

No, they only need to choose someone who will take the combined seats to over half the house. Could even be a few smaller parties/independents (though it’s easier to only have to deal with one other party). I can see no situation where Labour would ally themselves with Reform (or Tories unless all that’s left are a few One Nation ones, but even then unlikely).

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:34

Oh, the other thing the article slightly debunked was that people become right wing as they age - as there isn't much sign of Gen X having done this. It's a specific thing of Boomers.

This may be cheering news for the future. Sorry Boomers. Not wishing you all into your graves.

Zonder · 16/06/2024 10:36

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2024 10:10

Yes. There was an east / west&north divide in Europe with the west moving righter and the rest moving lefter. Germany was caught in the middle with their own east west divide.

Zonder · 16/06/2024 10:39

I get the feeling we are mostly Gen X in here - or am I projecting what I am onto everyone else?

What are you scared of? Gender issues aside. How much damage can a party that believes in investing in public services do after the slash and burn after the last 14 years?

I’m frankly sick of glass half empty or no glass at all posts. We’re about to have a change of government to one that’s not motivated by making itself and its mates richer than Croesus at our expense. That’s a cause for celebration and I’d rather not have my chips pissed on after having waited so long. For the love of God, let me enjoy it for a minute or two.
