I qualified as a teacher in 2000 - schools will never be perfect but I can’t remember an iota of the pressure I feel today. I was on maternity leave when Conservative came to power and returned to Gove’s curriculum. This government has failed an entire generation.

I had my kids in 2001 and 2003, and in 2003 things were definitely worse - the midwife who delivered DC2 was working a second consecutive shift because of staff shortages.

I shudder to think how bad things are now.

Yes
My dc1 was 2003
It was truly awful

My younger child was born in a small unit in the far north of Scotland twenty miles from my (then) home under a labour gov. It has since lost its specialist lead which means that pregnant women deemed to need specialist care have to make a 120 mile trip (each way) along twisty roads which are often blocked by snow or accidents to the nearest specialist led hospital. And to a higher rate of inductions and planned c-sections to avoid the risks involved with women in labour making the journey.

This under a ( devolved) SNP government during Tory times.

I love the way Boris Johnson is screeching all over the media about the possibility of a "freak" Labour majority. Is he reflecting on his role in that possibility? 🤔

This will be the same Boris that trumpeted his 80 seat majority as "the will of the people".

I hope Labour do get a "freak" majority. And in every interaction with the press remind them it's the will of the people before they explain their plans. It should become the equivalent of name, rank and serial number.

<typical Torygraph baiting question>
"Well, I'm pleased you asked me that. Since the will of the people was to elect a Labour government with a majority of <whatever> I'm sure we can all agree there is real appetite for this measure."

Every.
Single.
Fucking.
Time.

Of course the press are free - as they have always been - to decry the disconnect between votes and seats and question whether it serves democracy. But that would only delegitimize previous governments. Especially the one that Got Brexit Done.

cakeorwine · 15/06/2024 18:43

The will of the people only applies to Tory Governments.

DuncinToffee · 15/06/2024 19:00

There is a post on the Sure Start thread in aibu about the Tory decision to shut the program down.

It will surprise noone on this thread.

Texts from the phone of a Conservative Senedd member, which appear to ask an employee to maximise the politician's expenses claims, have been seen by BBC Wales.

Laura Anne Jones is under investigation by police over allegations concerning her expenses.
One message asked a staff member: "When doing petrol thing - always make more than I did – add in stuff please ok".

Closing the sure starts and libraries were - imo - two of the worst things the tories have done to this country.

Child poverty rates are soaring. Immunisation rates are plummeting, early help interventions (I was an early start volunteer) have stopped.

Schools and the nhs are left to deal with the results of this total lack of investment in our children and struggling families.

Heartbreaking.

dontcallmelen · 15/06/2024 19:37

Also what doesn’t appear to be talked about is real lack of health visitors/clinics when I had my two you saw them regularly they were available on the phone in the clinics or home visits, you could get the babies weighed talk over any worries & signposted for other services, my youngest dgd is four, apart from just after she was born no sign of a HV the two local clinics have closed she had her developmental checks via the phone.
yet again another failure/services cut to the bone that were primarily aimed at women & children.

Johnson's golden wallpaper interior designer got an honour as well

I remember when my first two, pre covid, I could walk into a sure start centre and get them weighed, (wait) to talk to a health visitor (2010s).... my second two, 2020s, couldn't see a health visitor, any issues "see a GP"... we all know how lucky we are for that... not to mention my best friend, had her DC a few years previous, both got the grant of £250 into a trust fund... a Labour thing...... mine got nothing...🙄

Yep.
Women and children have been utterly let down.

user8800 · 15/06/2024 20:18

All my dc got ctf vouchers...
1st got £750 (3 lots)
Others got £500 (2 lots)
It did really encourage me to save regularly for them when I could (couldn't always afford it)
But even those kids whose parents didn't add to it, they got approx: £1200 at 18, which was important for some of my dcs friends

DeadButDelicious · 15/06/2024 20:38

We are extraordinarily fortunate that we still have our sure start centre, it's called the children's centre now but it does pretty much everything the sure start did, I took my DD (born in 2016) to be weighed there at the health visitor clinic, it has a sensory room and all sorts of mum and baby classes, it's quite literally worth its weight in gold.

Getting rid of the sure starts was the worst thing the tories ever did and proves in one neat little package that they don't give a shit about women or children.

Saucery · 15/06/2024 20:39

We didn’t add to it because I didn’t entirely trust a government Free Money For Your Cheeeldren scheme. DS still got a tidy sum. I imagine many young people found it helpful.

user8800 · 15/06/2024 20:55

I moved my dcs ctf money into junior isas when I could

It's worked out well

itsgettingweird · 15/06/2024 21:04

One of ds para swimming friends/ team mates who has been a great support to him as he's started on the international circuit is getting an MBE.

Those are the people who should be recognised. Those who do good. She goes around schools talking to children about disability and the barriers and giving them confidence to overcome them.

Putting up fucking gold wallpaper - what good to society is that 🙄

That's lovely and exactly what the honours system should be used for.

DH and I were wondering what kind of company would even consider giving Sunak a job, when he has been ridiculed so comprehensively. I suppose his FIL owes him a few favours 🙄

Article on front page of tomorrow's Observer; private school numbers rises despite VAT plans from Labour

Lalgarh · 16/06/2024 00:00

Well quite. Surely there should be increased pressure in the private education sector to reduce fees

MissMarplesNiece · 16/06/2024 07:21

@user8800 I fear your right about a future Tory/Reform gov - or even just a Reform gov under the Tory name if Farage does join the Tories.

The thought of it scares me very much. There's so much that we would say goodbye to.

Alexandra2001 · 16/06/2024 07:46

My DD was born in '99, even then (Lab had had no time to improve matters) the healthcare was very good, apart from dentistry, she has never had an NHS dentist, ones that were still taking on patients were too far away, a lovely polish dentist did the kids for a reduced rate... guess what? went back to Poland after Brexit... another Tory win!!!

Its shocking to think that since 2010, the Tories have trashed the NHS more than even Thatcher/Major did, even Thatcher built new hospitals!
