Dog smell - I didn't think of this before getting one

Argh, it's awful! So bloody bad

We are a very clean family, and put a lot of effort in to have a clean and tidy home ticking over all the time

Just got a dog and the smell is horrific. It is so bad. And the dog isn't even allowed upstairs! People joked that I would go nose blind but I haven't. I can smell it constantly

I have hard flooring. But I walk in and he's smelling the place out. It's disgusting 🤢

Will this calm down once I've taken him to the groomers? I haven't done so yet as he's a rescue and I didn't want to attack him with shampoo and the like before he was settled

He's very calm so should be fine. I have booked him in for the clean in a few days

What else can I do? It's really getting me down - He is otherwise a perfect match. And such a kind, gentle soul.

I am... washing throws etc regularly. Keeping his oral hygiene up. Washing stuff again very regularly

All factors before getting him were considered. Time? Yes. Space? Yes. Temperament of dog? Yes, brilliant. Willing to walk him? Yes.

I don't know why I didn't think to research that actually, now matter how hard you try, your house will stink Envy

Are you actually washing HIM?

RandomMess · 11/06/2024 19:33

Look into food. What they eat can make a big difference to how much they smell.

Yes a good bath will help.

heyitis · 11/06/2024 19:35

I haven't bathed him because as I say, he's a rescue and I didn't want to start scrubbing the poor dog when he was new to the environment

I suppose I'm wondering if it'll actually make any difference overall if he's washed? Which I will 100% do anyway. But don't want to get my hopes up

The rescue I got him from said he doesn't need washing, ever Shock

Have you given him a bath? We have 4 rescues and know that the groomers can be traumatic, but they do have a bath at home as required. Rubber shower mat in the bottom to prevent slipping is a handy tip.

Good luck. It's great to see a rescue getting a second chance!

UpUpUpU · 11/06/2024 19:35

I’d get him in the bath and give him a really good shampoo.
I don’t have a dog but ai often stay at my friends who does have a dog and her house smells, even though she is clean and tidy.
Her dogs are bathed regularly (they are farm dogs) but the smell is undeniable.

Try the bath and see how it goes.

heyitis · 11/06/2024 19:36

I've looked his breed up on previous MN posts and his type keep regularly getting mentioned as 'less smelly'

I am not sure why because he really does stink Envy

My friend has always had dogs and her house never smelled. She has hard floors and the dogs are not allowed on the sofas. She adores her dogs but has a no sofa rule.

You’d stink if you never washed OP. The dog will smell better when it’s clean!

Swissrollover · 11/06/2024 19:36

Can we have a photo? Congratulations on your new pup!

bergamotorange · 11/06/2024 19:37

Dog houses always smell, and dog owners are completely in denial about it. You just have to pretend it doesn't exist!

He isn't on the sofa. I didn't actually say no but he doesn't seem interested! Which is good because he's huge lol

He is also not allowed, on pain of being in disgrace, to enter my bedroom or anywhere upstairs for that matter

Yet I walk into the house and it smells like a farm!

Must be a mixture of him and the awful dog food

Bath the dog. Clean dogs shouldn't really smell bad. I always used the Alberto balsam herbal shampoo and conditioner on mine as dog shampoo is shit. She had a lovely coat and never smelled.

PossumintheHouse · 11/06/2024 19:39

What kind of smell are we talking about? A traditional, slightly musky smell or something else? Dog scent isn't usually overpowering or something you can smell throughout the house.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 11/06/2024 19:39

You haven't washed him at all yet? How long have you had him? Dogs need to be washed. A bath at home with his new family isn't going to be half as stressful as dropping him off to a groomer he doesn't know. Throw some toys in his bath and play with him, give him treats, he'll get used to it.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 11/06/2024 19:40

What sort of dog bed does he have ? I’ve always found a plastic bed with washable cushion and blanket the best. Soft beds are difficult to keep fresh.

Querty123456 · 11/06/2024 19:40

What are you feeding him? Agree with giving him a good bath to see if that helps. Also is he neutered? Unneutered dogs smell imo.

AtrociousCircumstance · 11/06/2024 19:40

You can’t really comment until after he’s had a bath!

If you rescued any animal (or human!) who hadn’t had a wash for ages then they would probably stink.

heyitis · 11/06/2024 19:40

It smells of doggy, I am not sure how to put it. He doesn't really smell up close, it's fine! But weirdly the house stinks of him but x10. Not sure, it's awful though! And his farts seem to linger without any let up Grin

Yep, he's neutered

He might enjoy a bath - some dogs love being bathed. You could take him into the bathroom and see how he reacts.

You're a "very clean family" but you're wondering whether clean beings smell better than unclean ones? Really? Confused

Did you just not think this through?

BranchGold · 11/06/2024 19:41

Please give the dog a wash!

Get the hairdryer out on a cooler setting, wet dog isn’t much better than smelly dog.

circular2478 · 11/06/2024 19:42

You need to wash him. Who knows when the last time he had a proper wash was. My ddog can get anxious sometimes and knits more smell. Is the dog anxious?

I've just bought these eco friendly dog wipes on Amazon (lavender scent) and they're really good in between baths.

Also open your windows daily.

heyitis · 11/06/2024 19:42

@LiterallyOnFire no, that's not what I meant. I just wondered if you can ever really get rid of the doggy smell

Yes I know obviously he will be fresher. But I have seen countless threads (I've googled old ones) saying ALL homes with dogs smell. And those that say they don't, have dogs Grin
