Dog smell - I didn't think of this before getting one

Argh, it's awful! So bloody bad

We are a very clean family, and put a lot of effort in to have a clean and tidy home ticking over all the time

Just got a dog and the smell is horrific. It is so bad. And the dog isn't even allowed upstairs! People joked that I would go nose blind but I haven't. I can smell it constantly

I have hard flooring. But I walk in and he's smelling the place out. It's disgusting 🤢

Will this calm down once I've taken him to the groomers? I haven't done so yet as he's a rescue and I didn't want to attack him with shampoo and the like before he was settled

He's very calm so should be fine. I have booked him in for the clean in a few days

What else can I do? It's really getting me down - He is otherwise a perfect match. And such a kind, gentle soul.

I am... washing throws etc regularly. Keeping his oral hygiene up. Washing stuff again very regularly

All factors before getting him were considered. Time? Yes. Space? Yes. Temperament of dog? Yes, brilliant. Willing to walk him? Yes.

I don't know why I didn't think to research that actually, now matter how hard you try, your house will stink Envy

They reek to high heaven and even more so when wet.

Don't fool yourself (as so many dog owners do), your house will never smell clean again.

Floralnomad · 11/06/2024 20:04

I highly recommend Bugalugs oatmeal and tea tree shampoo , our dog gets bathed every 2 weeks ( minor skin problem ) and he smells lovely . I’d also get a good groomer as bathing them at home is hell .

EmeraldEagle · 11/06/2024 20:05

If he's a greyhound he's most likely spent his entire life in kennels and rarely, if ever, been bathed so I'm not surprised he stinks!
Get some good quality dog shampoo (bugalugs, for all dog kind, wildwash) and give him a bath. Presuming he's not got skin issues or and ear infection causing the smell that should improve things massively

Greyhounds don’t generally smell as much as dogs like labs, spaniels etc. It’s probably his kennel coat, how long have you had him? He will shed it and smell much better when he does. Also if he is on Time/Gain food that doesn’t smell great.
If he will let you wash him it will help - also if he hasn’t been with you long he probably a bit stressed which doesn’t help. A few weeks time he will be fine.
They are the most loving, gentle souls - great you have given him a home.

Dearg · 11/06/2024 20:05

Re the shampoo - definitely baby rather than adult. You need a no more tears formulation, as you don’t want him getting scared of being bathed.
I do like dog shampoo. I have a coconut one for mine, but I use baby shampoo to clean their feet and legs between baths.

Decent food is important, but as pp said, they get a very distinctive smell in kennels.

Enjoy your lovely dog.

He's a Greyhound

Currently looking at me very lovingly. I feel a deep sense of guilt for starting a thread about him Blush

If he's come from kennels then yes, they have a musty smell. Give him a wash and then let him have a snuggle.

I don’t believe you Op- it never happened unless you post a photo!

He's lovely. Give him a bath!

Notaflippinclue · 11/06/2024 20:12

Bathe em then off they go to roll in the fox poo

MuttsNutts · 11/06/2024 20:13

He needs a bath! All dogs would stink if they didn’t have a bath. I’ve always used baby shampoo on all mine.

Ygfrhj · 11/06/2024 20:15

Even if you wash him he'll smell again with a day or so. Dogs smell, dog owners stop noticing it. I don't think it's a bad smell if the dog and house are regularly cleaned but it's still noticeable to me when I visit houses with dogs.

If he and all his bedding/toys are washed regularly, he won’t smell at all like he does when he’s just come out of the kennels - that’s a very particular and unpleasant smell. Not all dogs stink.

PeonySeasons · 11/06/2024 20:18

If he's a rescue it could be fear and anxiety pheromones. Our rescue stank for weeks - a greasy, oily, musky smell. When she relaxed into the family it stopped until she really had a fright one day when she stank again.

A good bath, using white vinegar before shampoo made a huge difference, but if it's fear it'll take time.

Hercules12 · 11/06/2024 20:19

He’s gorgeous!

Was just coming on to post the same. Stressed scared dogs honk quite frankly and it does take a while for it to calm down.

Not all dogs need bathing regularly, my dearly departed dog was washed once a year on a very hot day in the summer. Every groomer who ever saw her complimented her coat condition. She did get topped and tailed regularly like a baby would though Grin.

Citrusandginger · 11/06/2024 20:28

How gorgeous is he?

If you can't easily bath him, t-towel sized microfibre cloths are a good way to give dogs a wash and aquasorb towels are amazing. They are like a dog chammy.

I'd also recommend vet bedding which is easy to wash. I bought a roll of it which was good value.

The only thing I'd add is that stressed dogs can be smelly dogs, so if the dog does find it stressful, you might be better to brush him regularly outside so you don't have to wash him as often.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/06/2024 20:29

Clean him. He’ll probably enjoy it. Our terrier did. Friends who didn’t know we had a dog didn’t know we had a dog, if you see what I mean.

Gotta love these comments from the dog lovers!

But all dogs smell and all dogs give a doggy smell to a house. You know it, OP knows it, and I know it.

Wolfpa · 11/06/2024 21:05

You can smell if there is a dog in the house as soon as you walk through the door, you can’t escape it. I guess dog owners just get used to it.

Except it's factually incorrect, as evidenced by huge swathes of the country with non smelly dogs in non smelly houses.

Every breed has a different coat, different behaviour and different needs. Just as each home has different elements which affects smell icndluing) including removal of carpet flooring, regular cleaning and the dogs being brushed / dried etc.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 11/06/2024 21:13

My dh has a cane corso and his house does not have a doggy smell.

WingSlutz · 11/06/2024 21:13

Give him a bath
Make sure you're feeding him something decent not pedigree chum or something
Get the vet to check his ears, teeth, bum.
get used to a bit of a smell

verylongday · 11/06/2024 21:16

When i got a rescue dog she absolutely reeked. I bathed her 2 days on the trot to get the smell out. It was awful. A nice non stressy bath wont hurt him at all.
