Dog smell - I didn't think of this before getting one

Argh, it's awful! So bloody bad

We are a very clean family, and put a lot of effort in to have a clean and tidy home ticking over all the time

Just got a dog and the smell is horrific. It is so bad. And the dog isn't even allowed upstairs! People joked that I would go nose blind but I haven't. I can smell it constantly

I have hard flooring. But I walk in and he's smelling the place out. It's disgusting 🤢

Will this calm down once I've taken him to the groomers? I haven't done so yet as he's a rescue and I didn't want to attack him with shampoo and the like before he was settled

He's very calm so should be fine. I have booked him in for the clean in a few days

What else can I do? It's really getting me down - He is otherwise a perfect match. And such a kind, gentle soul.

I am... washing throws etc regularly. Keeping his oral hygiene up. Washing stuff again very regularly

All factors before getting him were considered. Time? Yes. Space? Yes. Temperament of dog? Yes, brilliant. Willing to walk him? Yes.

I don't know why I didn't think to research that actually, now matter how hard you try, your house will stink Envy

I have 2 dogs. No smell. They are hosed down when they get muddy, go to the groomer 6-8 weekly, and I have some leave in conditioner that i sometimes use. Bathe him.

iloveeverykindofcat · 12/06/2024 06:10

You have to wash him. Its the only way. See this adorable petite dainty lady? She is basically the perfect dog. She had a cancer scare a while ago (benign) and her temperament is so absolutley rock solid the vet could shave her belly and scan her with no sedation. Our rescue could bark directly in her face and she'd just turn her face away. She is a lady in all thing except one - she is the absolute worst for rolling in shit and dead things. She gets bathed pretty regularly with dog shampoo. At this point she quite likes it. Warm water, fuss and pettings, dry with a fluffy towel. This is the only reason she doesn't reek.

Dogs do fucking stink, one reason of many why most of the normal population (ie those that can find love and friendship within their own species) don't want to share coffee shop, pub or restaurant space with them.

Dog owners are like cigarette smokers, oblivious to their own stench.

Totally agree! And they also get SO offended!

They 100% smell. I don't have a dog,I work in the community going into people's homes and even the cleanest of houses smell, sometimes people have thr plug ins going or a candle trying to mask it. I think maybe it's their dander? I'm allergic and often ask on the phone if there's a different room etc but rarely makes a difference tbh

Are you actually feeling okay? Why would having a dog mean I can't find love and friendship with my own species (must remember to tell my husband and multiple friends that little nugget of info 🤣)
Lots of things 'stink', many people these days seem to stink due to not bathing/washing clothes often enough. They offend me more than a slight dog smell.

Mrsdyna · 12/06/2024 06:25

The only dog owner I know whose house and clothes don't stink does it by washing her dog after every walk and regularly cleaning her carpets. Their dog isn't allowed on the furniture either.

Kittea · 12/06/2024 06:26

Agree with the sentiment that all dog homes smell like dog. Their owners are just nose blind.

Aurea · 12/06/2024 06:38

Please give him a bath.

This pet website sells fabulously scented herbal products.

The shampoo and grooming spray smell divine, leave the coat soft and shiny and are 100% natural.

OP, he is lovely, I love greyhounds! I don't have a dog but a lot of my friends do, and the smell in the house completely relates to how clean (visually) the dog is - if it looks like its never seen a bath, the smell is awful. If the dog looks clean, pretty much no smell.

Your poor dog may not have had a wash for a long time, so it a bit whiffy. Give him a good bath and see how it goes!

Thank you - I have to say, I don't think he had EVER had a bath before Grin

The guy at the centre said 'he doesn't ever need a bath, he's a greyhound'

Put an old towel in the bottom of the bath so he can stand on it otherwise the bath will feel slippy to him

Amsx · 12/06/2024 07:53

I've never been in a doggy house without being able to smell them

The owners usually can't but I presume they don't mind a bit if a stinky house in exchange for a fluffy pet.

Eddielizzard · 12/06/2024 08:13

He'll stink for the first two weeks, from stress. Get his teeth done, make sure he has a good diet. It'll ease up, promise.

dottiedodah · 12/06/2024 08:34

Could you ask around for a good nearby Groomer? Often have good ideas for this kind of thing . A good wash and dry ,also stripping out his coat will make him more fragrant! Having had dogs for nearly 30 years I m probably a bit nose blind now!

I really hope that soon places realise what an error it is making everything ‘dog friendly’ it’s cruel for dogs they are animals they want to be in nature not shops or cafes! Plus for those with sensory or allergy issues it’s unfair

It’s such a distinctive almost bitter and stale smell 🤢

RaisedEyebrows11 · 12/06/2024 08:38

I knew this would be a greyhound as soon as you said he’s not supposed to smell!

I wouldn’t bath him at home - mine struggles to keep upright slipping about with his hare-like feet. I learned his the hard way and he became very upset last time. I have a set up now to wash him in the garden with warm water. I think you’d be best taking him to the groomer rather than stressing him out.

Also, my boy absolutely stank when he first got home. Kennels are smelly. Once he does get a wash he’ll be fine. Another thing I guess is dog food smells like whiffy dog very often so cleaning his bowls properly every day will help.

Poster provides timely reminder why so many people prefer the company of dogs to humans.

OhFensa · 12/06/2024 08:51

i have greyhounds. They always stink when they come from the kennels. I had the same reaction as you. It settles! Also they have sensitive stomachs so it takes a while to find something that stops the farts. Mine eat Burns sensitive pork and apple. You can get it from pets at home.

NashvilleQueen · 12/06/2024 08:58

A bath to get the smell of his previous kennels out of him is a good idea. Some breeds smell much more than others but usually greyhounds aren't too bad so hopefully a good wash will sort him.

It's just not true to say that dog owners houses always smell. I have had dogs yes so could be biased but I go to friends' houses and some smell doggy and others just don't.

Also some dog smells are lovely ☺️

I will say tho that Instagram has a lot to answer for with its nonsense dog washing/spa sessions. Healthy dogs do not need weekly baths. It's not good for their coats and I think if you strip out their natural oils you end up with a smellier dog. Unless muddy or covered in fox shit a bath every few months is fine.

Nettleskeins · 12/06/2024 09:02

My dog smells lovely and "toasty". He sleeps on sofas and beds. He smelt less good as a puppy in a new environment. I think it was actually the smell of fear. It wore off as he relaxed. I love the smell of my dog's fur and I don't even wash him very often as it's bad for his coat (mats) He is a poodle so maybe they smell less. A friend's staffy has what a would call a "sweaty* smell, not so good. He has skin allergies, takes apoquel etc, so it might be linked.
Tbh I think a poor cereal based diet will make a dog smell worse. Bakers or Pedigree chum have a terrible effect on my dog's fur smell.

positivewings · 12/06/2024 09:13

I can smell dog like a none smoker can smell smoke.
No matter how clean your home is it's the smell.

SongSungBlues · 12/06/2024 09:29

Wonderful that you have rescued a greyhound! He’s gorgeous.

Definitely bath him - get the kennel smell off, and yes, a towel in the bottom of tree bath so he doesn’t slip. Also, as others have said, when they’re nervous they smell more. When we take ours in the car, which he hates, he starts smelling funky. It soon passes.

Their farts can be appalling, as they often have delicate stomachs (despite the manky things they’ll try and scavenge out in walks!). . Try cereal-free tins. The only one that worked for ours was Butcher’s.

I’m sure it will settle.

Enjoy your lovely hound!

Gondoliere · 12/06/2024 10:20

Honestly it may be the food along the lack of grooming. You need to keep the bum trim and other bits.
Dry food like Lily”s kitchen does smell in the house. Also, take him to a groomer once a month. Give the dog a dry spray bath once a week and put something like lavender around the house or at the entrance.

PeanutCat1 · 12/06/2024 10:27

I honestly think some dogs just really smell, I'm quite sensitive to smells so can really sympathise! We have 3 different households in our family with dogs and 2 of them don't really smell at all and one stinks even though regularly visits groomers and house is kept lovely and clean etc.
