Dog smell - I didn't think of this before getting one

Argh, it's awful! So bloody bad

We are a very clean family, and put a lot of effort in to have a clean and tidy home ticking over all the time

Just got a dog and the smell is horrific. It is so bad. And the dog isn't even allowed upstairs! People joked that I would go nose blind but I haven't. I can smell it constantly

I have hard flooring. But I walk in and he's smelling the place out. It's disgusting 🤢

Will this calm down once I've taken him to the groomers? I haven't done so yet as he's a rescue and I didn't want to attack him with shampoo and the like before he was settled

He's very calm so should be fine. I have booked him in for the clean in a few days

What else can I do? It's really getting me down - He is otherwise a perfect match. And such a kind, gentle soul.

I am... washing throws etc regularly. Keeping his oral hygiene up. Washing stuff again very regularly

All factors before getting him were considered. Time? Yes. Space? Yes. Temperament of dog? Yes, brilliant. Willing to walk him? Yes.

I don't know why I didn't think to research that actually, now matter how hard you try, your house will stink Envy

Sorry but I would be washing dog. Had many rescues and washed and delivered flead etc on arrival day. We also have hard floors etc and none of my non doggy family visitors say anything about a smell

Chasingsquirrels · 11/06/2024 19:43

Some breeds smell worse than others.
(My DPs Great Dane stinks to me, even when he's freshly washed, I think Labs smell similar.)

If he has come from a kennel then there is definitely a kennel smell, I have always had to wash a dog immediately if they've been in kennels when we've been away.

letstrythatagain · 11/06/2024 19:43

Glad it's good match apart from the smell 😃. My sister's dog stinks the house out. Especially when he's damp. Mine is fine but I think it's the short hair. I think a good scrub is the way to go although I do understand why you have held back until now.

Decent food makes a huge difference to the smell of the animal and the state of the poo!

heyitis · 11/06/2024 19:43

Right that's it! I've decided he's getting washed

I've got baby shampoo OR Bed Head salon Grin will either be okay? Seen someone previously say dog shampoo is rubbish

There's always a faint aroma of dog in a dog house, which is just part of the territory, but it shouldn't "stink". It's a bit like dog hair in that you can't avoid it entirely but you can keep on top of it.

Snooglequack · 11/06/2024 19:44

Two words: anal glands

21ZIGGY · 11/06/2024 19:44

Are you being sensitive? My dog loves water and mud and my house doesnt smell. The only "bath" he gets is when he swims. I hoover & mop and thats it. Hes a super shedder. I use scented candles.
I always ask guests if my house smells of dog and they say no and my parents would 100% tell me the truth😂

LiterallyOnFire · 11/06/2024 19:44

(Oh and I have dogs, so we're not all in denial)

VenusClapTrap · 11/06/2024 19:45

Dogs smell. That’s just how it is. I’ve never been in a dog house that didn’t (even when the owners think it doesn’t).

Fuckitsstillraining · 11/06/2024 19:45

You don't say what type or mix he is but I'm sorry to tell that some dogs are just smelly. I have had dobermann for decades and none of them were particularly smelly except one, he has a distinct odour all of his own,if he'd been in the sittingroom while I was away I knew as soon as I got back, bathing made zero difference unless I was going to bath him twice daily. We had him checked by the vet, nothing wrong, his coat also felt different to the others, kind of oily. He's 15 now and he's the only one left so I'll happily put up with the smell knowing it's not for ever, it means constant cleaning, washing dog beds, floors etc but he's worth it. He's a rescue too, was a trained service dog who suffered extreme neglect and deserves his comfort now.

What breed is he? Wash him, but make sure he is dried after (I chuck mine in the garden - they come back a bit green from the grass but otherwise they grind themselves along the sofa...). Check anal glands and ears (infections stink, very sour stale smell - normal ears smell doggy but not unpleasant). And if that doesn't help then get some decent candles.

YellowSunRays · 11/06/2024 19:49

Agree with @VenusClapTrap.
When I visit anyone I know with a dog their house smells to various degrees, depending on size of house/dog and their tidiness levels but there's no one I know with a dog where you'd go into the house and not know a dog lived there.
It puts me off having a dog.

Two words: anal glands

This ^ especially if it's a kind of fish fowl smell. I find the best way to prevent small glands needing to be done regularly to feed a raw diet or Atleast offer raw bones to eat over a week ( and they do eat them totally) and this really firms the poo and helps to express the snack glands. Basically every firm poo passes the snack glands and secretes his own scent out. It's like social media for dogs, they walk and smell and know what other dogs have been there. With soft poos, the liquid just sits in the glands, a bit like engorgement during breast feeding but really smelly 😂🤷🏼‍♀️. Most decent groomers will offer the service for extra money. Pay them, and tip them too as it's a bloody horrible job.

He's a Greyhound

Currently looking at me very lovingly. I feel a deep sense of guilt for starting a thread about him Blush

What breed of dog you have will factor in how many baths they need. You can wash out natural oils that some of them have if you wash too frequently

NoTouch · 11/06/2024 19:51

Some breeds are prone to skin conditions that can cause them to be smelly and also mean you need to be careful what to wash them with as they are sensitive and it could result in awful skin conditions and a worse smell.

If the smell is coming from his bum (sorry!) you need to try different foods until you find one that agrees with him.

Coaltodiamonds · 11/06/2024 19:52

I don't think it's a given that dog = permanently smelly house. We have a short haired medium sized dog, and I can definitely tell when our house smells doggy and when it doesn't. Washed dog, thoroughly vaxed carpets and upholstery and we have a few weeks of a fresh house, before it starts to get a bit stinky again.

I'm sure I read somewhere that rescue dogs are often whiffy when they first arrive home, so hopefully a good shampoo will sort him out!

MichaelAndEagle · 11/06/2024 19:53

I think you can always tell if a dog lives in a house, there is a smell.
But it shouldn't stink! Although I guess that is subjective.

MathsandStats · 11/06/2024 19:55

Rescues often stink. We've had a few rescues and every one has smelled terrible until they've had a bath and groom. I think it will get better.

W0tnow · 11/06/2024 19:55

I’m sensitive to dog smell. A greyhound? Wash him, he’ll be fine. They are lovely.

crumblingschools · 11/06/2024 19:56

Are there anal gland issues that can cause an aroma!

Howcanichange · 11/06/2024 19:57

Have you washed him now. I have a shih tzu and I wash him probably twice a month. More if its muddy out.
I gave him a shower yesterday and he smells much nicer! They get sweaty and cheesy.
I really did wash every single bit of him, he's never looked cleaner, even more so than when he's been to the groomers!

HowNice23 · 11/06/2024 19:59

A bath at home and get his anal glands sorted as per previous poster. I've not had greyhounds but i hear they have awful farts no idea why or if it's specific to food. Early days OP you're just getting to know each other x
