Harry Potter plotholes/ goofs that really annoy you

I absolutely love Harry Potter, I watch it twice a year, would watch it more if I had the time. One plothole that gets me every time, so Fred and George had the marauders map all that time and didn’t notice that Ron’s rat was Peter pettigrew?
every time I watch it, it grinds my gears.
any one else notice anything?

Also with the size of the school... they only name a handful of students, but there's obviously a lot more. There's likely more than one dormitory for each form in the tower for example. I think its more likely there was 100 or so in Harry's year at least.

OnlyFoolsAndHamsters · 11/06/2024 20:09

I have wondered - wouldn't Hermione's parents friends/extended family call them and ask them about Hermione now and again? Surely there'd be some muggle police involvement at some point if they up and left, changed their names and claimed to not know who their daughter is.

Pinkywoo · 11/06/2024 20:15

That right from book one, everyone has been banging on about Harry having his mum's eyes, yet in all the flashbacks her eyes are brown and his are blue!

I think the point the poster was making was that at the time Hagrid said that to Harry, Sirius was in azkaban and presumed guilty by the entire wizarding world.

The mere fact that all of the history of Sirius, Neville's parents etc isn't common knowledge amongst the students is a big plot hole.

Family friends, older siblings etc - these were huge news events, people would know!

YellowHairband · 11/06/2024 20:18

I think the goblet of fire thing is that the aim was to make it look like Harry died in an accident in the tournament, so no one would know Voldemort was back.

Mine is - why would dumbledore hire Lockhart??

randomusernam · 11/06/2024 20:20

Please read the books! Loads of these are explained in the books

ISaySteadyOn · 11/06/2024 20:24

Not so much a plot hole as an irritating realisation. Even the good wizards look down on Muggles. They may not want to kill them, sure, but Muggles are definitely regarded as quaint pat them on the head lesser beings. Even Hermione thinks that to a certain extent what with erasing her parents memories without a by your leave. It doesn't matter if she was trying to protect them; that should have been their decision not hers but they are only stupid Muggles so they don't get a say.

Came here to say this!

The eye thing is simple!
Harry is supposed to have green eyes.
Daniel Radcliffe has blue eyes.
When they tried him with coloured contact lenses at 11yo his eyes would water, so they didn't use them.

Actor. Not the character

It was a filming decision about contacts for Radcliffe. Not sure about his mum though.

echt · 11/06/2024 20:31

Cross post!

FirstFallopians · 11/06/2024 20:32

The books clear a lot of these up, or rather the plot holes didn’t exist in the first place as opposed to the movies.

JKR has admitted herself that she was always crap with numbers, hence the reason that the student numbers, money system and quidditch scoring were always a bit up the left.

I think in terms of world building and a reasonably complicated plot written over 7 books, she did very well to have as few plot holes as she did.

I believe that was to try and make his eyes green like in the book. Maybe this is an oversight by JKR as it’s exceptionally rare to have both red hair and green eyes. Much more common for redheads to have brown eyes. So that would mean Harry’s eyes should have been brown in the book and not green, if they were to match Lily’s.

So why not hire a blue eyed actress to play his mum!

PiggyPlumPie · 11/06/2024 20:38

The Marauders map showed every single person in Hogwarts! It would have been really difficult to see individuals.

Fred & George would have been checking secret passages etc rather than checking Ron's bedroom!

The films only showed a few names on the map.

But that’s not the issue we are talking about.

We are saying that there are comments throughout the books saying Harry has his mother’s eyes. But their eyes are different coloure. Lily’s eyes are brown in the flashbacks.

Pterodacty1 · 11/06/2024 20:39

House elves live at Hogwarts. They can apperate in and out if Hogwarts at will (something noone else can). And house elves follow orders.

The Hogwarts house elves could have solved many of the issues.

Redheads very rarely have blue or green eyes.

echt · 11/06/2024 20:41

Not a plot hole but how does an 11 year-old boy kill another human being (Quirell)with his bare hands without any mental or emotional reactions? I don’t buy it that Voldemort was using Quirrell as a mule made it OK in Harry’s head.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 11/06/2024 20:42

all of these are worked out in the books. The films are gash- just confusingly put together with massive plot holes because the director wants to spend ten minutes doing CGI season changes.

The time turner is a loop and Hermione only has it for book 3. The rest are locked up in the Department of Mysteries, where they are destroyed in Book 5.

Goblet of Fire has to be complex because there’s two mysteries running- what happened to Crouch and who is trying to hurt Harry. They seem separate for most of the book, until the big reveal. Barry Crouch Jr was simply working with what he had to hand: his dad’s ministry powers and the captured Moody. Harry couldn’t be taken from Hogwarts grounds because of the spells (read Hogwarts: A History, as Hermione keeps reminding Ron and Harry). He needed an excuse to set up a port key- The Triwizard Tournament- to get Harry off Hogwarts grounds.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 11/06/2024 20:42

Why did Hermione’s parents take a letter telling them she was a witch and needs to be shipped off to a magic castle they’ve never visited for months on end seriously, and actually send her

Chickatease · 11/06/2024 20:43

spriots · 11/06/2024 19:33

The time turner thing - stupid thing to introduce, could solve any problems

The whole plot of Goblet of fire - entirely about getting Harry to pick up a portkey, there has to have been an easier way to do that!

Isn't it that portkeys dont work within hogwarts grounds but the maze was exempt for the tournament

thanKyouaIMee · 11/06/2024 20:46

How are the pipes in Hogwarts walls big enough for a gigantic Basilisk to slither around whispering through walls? The chamber of secrets was huge to house it, but it manages to pspsps at Harry through a 2ft wide stone wall?!

Livelaughlurgy · 11/06/2024 20:47

All bad wizards being slytherins does not mean all slytherins are bad.

Also Harry's parents dying and Voldemort marking him his equal set in motion the prophecy for his demise. So even if he could use the time turner he can't run the risk.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 11/06/2024 20:48

@echt Quirell was posed by Voldemort’s spirit. When Harry touched him the charm his mother sealed with her death hurt Voldemort so much that he was driven from Quirrell’s body- this process made Quitell’s body dissolve.

Voldemort killed Quirrell, not Harry.
