Nitrofurantoin (UTI antibiotic)

Experiences of this antibiotic?

I've terrified myself reading threads on here that say the side effects are horrendous. I'm emetophobic and desperately can't afford to take time off work with anything, and I'm such an anxious person!

OP posts:
Rubybetsie · 10/06/2024 13:09

I've used these a few times. No problems at all...worked quickly on the infection and no side effects.

KennaThomas · 10/06/2024 13:10

If you've been prescribed it then you need it 😅
It's used very commonly and usually well tolerated by most people.

I can understand your worries. Don't read the threads. It will only make the anxiety worse and that in itself can cause nausea/vomiting.

Best of luck!

Cosycore · 10/06/2024 13:10

I had no problems with this antibiotic

I've literally just finished a course for a UTI today. Didn't have a single side effect. Much gentler than some horrible antibiotics I've endured over the years.

Pootles34 · 10/06/2024 13:12

No problems here - and I feel nauseous regularly from other medications.

Anatomical · 10/06/2024 13:19

No problems at all for me either - unlike some other antibiotics I have previously taken.

Munchyseeds2 · 10/06/2024 13:23

I have taken it many times with no issues
It does turn pee a funny colour so don't panic.
If you need it, you need it

olderbutwiser · 10/06/2024 13:24

Never heard of any reactions, and never had a reaction. Had it several times.

PeonySeasons · 10/06/2024 13:25

Never had a side effect. Had to take it a lot....

thedendrochronologist · 10/06/2024 15:56

I had no problems OP. Felt better within hours too
It's a very short course.

Kitkat1523 · 10/06/2024 16:11

It’s very gentle I’ve found….I’ve recently had a course of clarythromycin and that was hardcore in comparison….makes your pee a dark brown colour

Kitkat1523 · 10/06/2024 16:12

The alternative is you develop a kidney infection and will definitely need time off work

Coconutter24 · 10/06/2024 16:14

I’ve had these a few times and never any side effects. Always work quite quickly as well.
If you’ve been prescribed them then you obviously need them, if you do t take them the infection could get worse and end up with more problems than you began with

marigoldandrose · 10/06/2024 16:15

I've taken it and it was useless for me. I ended up with a kidney infection.

Did you have a 3 or 7 day course?

marigoldandrose · 10/06/2024 16:17

@Kitkat1523 I had two seven day courses

marigoldandrose · 10/06/2024 16:19

@Kitkat1523 I had two seven day courses

Sorry should have added the second course was straight after the first as opposed to two separate occasions

marigoldandrose · 10/06/2024 16:17

@Kitkat1523 I had two seven day courses

So what cleared it in the end?

Mumoftwo1316 · 10/06/2024 16:22

I've used this one twice and was very nauseous the first time, but that was because I was in my first trimester and very nauseous anyway.

The second time, I don't think it made me particularly nauseous at all.

So take reviews with a pinch of salt - it could be that many women had it in early pregnancy and were nauseous for that reason, rather than the AB itself being particularly nauseating

marigoldandrose · 10/06/2024 16:23

@Kitkat1523 IV antibiotics in hospital got rid of it but it took a long while for my GP to take it seriously as urine samples came back negative of infection it was only when it got to the point of being in a huge amount of pain with fever they diagnosed the kidney infection and I got the stronger, Iv antibiotics

WetBandits · 10/06/2024 16:24

I’ve never felt sick with it, but my wee does go bright green!

Ineedaholidayyyy · 10/06/2024 16:25

I've had a course of these several times and have never suffered any adverse effects! Take them as otherwise you could end up with a kidney infection and worse case scenario sepsis if not treated.

AgnesX · 10/06/2024 16:25

It didn't make me feel ill and it seemed work in that I felt better but it really affected my peripheral neuropathy so if you have anything like that I'd give it a wide berth.

Haggisfish3 · 10/06/2024 16:27

It’s not actually an antibiotic. It works in a different way. It’s more of an antiseptic when it reacts with your urine. I have taken it loads of times and been fine.

Conqueeftador · 10/06/2024 16:27

I have a relative who has fairly regular UTIs, and she always takes this (as she’s allergic to trimethoprim). Shes a regular vomiting Veronica, but this has never made her sick op. No side effects at all.
