Things that you can’t quite believe were the norm

What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

I used to watch the Black and White Minstrels show with my Grandad who was babysitting. I loved singing along. I was much too young to be aware of how wrong it was. I don’t think I was even aware they were parodying black people. It just was what it was. My kids can’t believe some of the things we watched in the 60s/70s

And don't forget collecting labels for the Robinsons Gollies. 😬😬😬

Under 18s nights in nightclubs! We used to go (aged 14) dressed in short skirts, high platform shoes and little tops! White lighting before we went and I think it used to finish about 10.30pm and no one cared how anyone got home. You'd just walk with your friends half naked (coats were not cool) home.

I think that sounds fine!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/06/2024 21:30

Physics teacher asking me why I was doing this and shouldn't I do modelling instead ?

I was 17yo , not Page 3 as I was an ironing board size 8 .

Publicly-funded healthcare, free treatment for everyone as and when needed.

Free quality education for all children.

Being able to hop in the car or on a train to France and travel around Europe unimpeded. Plentiful, affordable fresh food from Europe.

Believing what we saw and heard: "the camera never lies". I think AI-enhanced disinformation will undermine a lot more than our ideas about celebrities.

The trans phenomenon will leave residual changes, but people will be dumbfounded that we spent 30-ish years insisting sex was mutable and sterilising eccentric children. On the other hand, medical science will find ways to fuck about with the sex of a human body.

Agree about the Drag Barbie look, but there'll probably be something just as bizarre.

I wish I thought porn and militarisation would calm down, but they're likely to get worse. Human prostitution might become much rarer, though.

Agree that natural meat will go out of style (sadly; I'm a carnivore!)

Old age being normal. People will be increasingly encouraged to top themselves (sorry, have "assisted dying") before they get old, except the rich who'll have access to rejuvenation therapies that actually work.

People won't believe we were so slow to pedestrianise town centres: you took children out in all that traffic?!

Me being alive 😂 although this will hardly be a matter of popular discussion!

ThoseDarnCrows · 09/06/2024 21:39

High st shops closing by 5.30 pm Mon to Sat, with half day closing on Weds or Thurs, and fully closed all day Sundays.

Late night shopping first happened for me at Boots in Leeds where I was a store assistant around 1979 or 1980, not sure The manager called a general meeting to say that there would be late night shopping on the Thursday nights leading up to Christmas. If anyone wasn't happy with working lates, they were welcome to collect their cards - his words not mine!

No shopping centres/malls etc until the earliest one I remember in 1983 in my home town.

We will look back in 20 years and realise how people wanted to look like ducks with lip fillers , lips so big that it just looks so unnatural , very sad that people aren’t happy with their natural looks and feel like they have to do such things to fit in and look perfect in their eyes 🤯natural all the way , doesn’t matter how you look , someone true will find you perfect the way you are naturally .

Sad thing is - those that had it all done will be stuck with the after effects (saggy let down balloon lips?) in 20 years time 😬

myusernamewastakenbyme · 09/06/2024 21:51

Miss World being shown on prime time tv in the 70's and 80's.

BeyondMyWits · 09/06/2024 21:51

We used to travel supersonically. We used to get doctors appointments by turning up and waiting. There used to be a 4hr target that had to be met in A and E. Phone batteries and gadget batteries used to last days, or even weeks... Obsolescence was not built in. A washing machine, tv etc were built to last.
Not everything you can't believe from way back was bad.

As a very very minor in the great scheme of things throwback from the 80s , my eyebrows have never forgiven me for getting too tweezer happy and embracing the SpermBrow Look . (It was the fashion )

I now think of 50 years to come when so many corpses will have Turkey/TicTac Teeth as it will be The Norm .

Yes, especially as they used 16 year olds 🤢🤢🤢🤢

And younger. I remember them promoting page 3 using some model's up-and-coming 16th birthday - may have been Sam Fox. Point is, the model was already well known before she was 16. Possibly she kept some of her kit on, but was still wank fodder from a very early age. Grim.

howaboutchocolate · 09/06/2024 21:58

Chemicals that cause health issues on almost all school uniform. People will (hopefully) be horrified that children were exposed to so much Teflon just so their parents didn't have to iron or remove stains from their uniform.

The amount of plastic we use and clothes made of plastic/polyester/acrylic.

shellyleppard · 09/06/2024 22:01

Taking a note to the shop and buying my mum's cigarettes, sleeping in the car on long journeys, no seatbelts, sitting in a pub garden with a packet of crisps and a bottle of pop. No limits on drinking

AuntieJoyce · 09/06/2024 22:06

In my first sales job in 1990 I got told by my male manager how long my skirt needed to be and we were banned from wearing suit trousers. Skirt suits only

We still had a typing pool, ashtrays on the desk and a tea lady came round at 10 o’clock with some toast.

I was watching the Amy Winehouse biopic on sky this week and Jay Leno making jokes about her drug addiction when she’d been a guest on his show not that long before is pretty upsetting. I don’t think this would be acceptable today.

Also it was Sam Fox's own mother that sent in photos of her in lingerie aged 16 to a Sunday People competition.

She was 16 FFS

Used to watch it as a student, and The Wright Stuff and This Morning. It was proper student tv😂

2catsandhappy · 09/06/2024 22:13

Pottery class in primary school. Making ash trays for your mum and dad.

AngelinaFibres · 09/06/2024 22:19

I was in Yr 6 in 1976. The girls did needlework with a female teacher. Boys did geography with q male teacher. We were all going to marry farmers so apparently we didn't need to know where anything was.

Ilovebees · 09/06/2024 19:50

I find it disgusting that in early 2000’s and earlier than that girls in school had to have naked showers after PE lesson . No privacy whatsoever , nice way to knock someone’s confidence down , NOT, forcing a girl to do something she would never willingly do if given a choice ! Sounds like a prison . And most likely a teacher watching the girls have the shower too ! Sounds very pervy in my eyes !

That happened??? Wow

FFSWherearemyglasses · 09/06/2024 22:21

Sitting In the car outside the pub with a packet of crisps and bottle of pop while parents were inside. Kids weren’t allowed in pubs.

Tying a piece of cotton around a loose tooth and the other around a door handle 🚪

Clackers and Conkers

Smoking on a plane; one row was non smoking- the one behind was smoking with the ashtray in the arm of the seat 🤢

Getting off with the PE teacher at the local disco in 5th year 😬

Wagging off school to work on the local pub 🤣

Going out to play at 9am and not coming home till 9pm

Trixiefirecracker · 09/06/2024 22:23

Buying one fag at a time in our corner shop, the owners were happy to sell them to kids. Smoking on planes was allowed but at the back?!! Somehow the smoke miraculously would circulate to the front? Not quite sure what the thinking was there….😂

TheLaughOfRustyLee · 09/06/2024 19:58

ooops sorry, misread the OP - you mean what's happening NOW that we'll look back on and not believe it was allowed?

erm, genocide?

You mean like the Holocaust?

Moveoverdarlin · 09/06/2024 22:28

LakeTiticaca · 09/06/2024 20:12

@Ilovebees I was at school in the 70s and we were not made to have communal showers after PE. We didn't have any kind of shower 😀probably because we didn't put much effort into the PE so weren't very sweaty 😅

Same. There were showers in the changing room and from yr 7 to end of sixth form I never saw one girl use them. We were all horrified at the prospect.
