Things that you can’t quite believe were the norm

What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

My mum left me outside the shop.

it was only when she got home did she realise I was still there….

My mum did that with my older brother, 55 years ago. 😅

I hope that in the future transphobia will be viewed with the same distaste as homophobia. It’s pretty obviously rehashed ‘gay panic’ nonsense and it’s embarrassing to see people peddle it. Pathetic.

One of the issues is that the same messaging and tactics are being used politically but this is a completely different issue.

Essentially a person being homosexual doesn't really affect anyone else. Gay/Lesbian/Bi- rights required a few important changes to existing laws i.e. marriage equality and discrimination laws. It doesn't police what people think about it and what other people think doesn't change whether you are gay or not.

Trans-rights are not the same. They do require that people have to change their thinking away from (sometime painfully obvious) reality and that other people completely unrelated to them have their boundaries changed. It really matters to the person what other people think, because that is an essential part of being accepted as the opposite sex.

The LGBT+ political community have tried to use the similar messaging and tactics and this has fallen flat. In addition with gay rights the fear was all coming from the men, but these fears were largely un-founded. Now the messaging is primarily targeted at women, whose main source of violence is men and that should be taken into account when discussing this issue.

If they had continued to do the work at ground level, and really pushed for throrough-assessment and treatment rather than rushing through self-ID, acceptance would be much higher at this stage.

Under 18s gets g arrived with or without parental consent.

Any relationship between a teen and someone over 21.

Weed smoking has become acceptable and deemed 'safe' 😮🤦‍♀️

Young teens having boyfriends old enough to drive, when I was 14/15 my bf was 19 🤢

Yup. I was 14 with 18-21 year olds. Totally gross.

IrnBruLolly · 10/06/2024 21:48

Vaping weed or eating edibles is safer than getting drunk tbf. We only accept alcohol because we're used to it.

Needanewname42 · 10/06/2024 21:49

@Floorbard Being GLB doesn't affect anyone beyond those people.

Trans is open to abuse, and abuse of womens, spaces Isla Bryson, open to abuse of womens sports Rachel McKinnon.

What's the point in even having womans anything (spaces, sports, rights) if a male in pink leggings can waltze in and say they are a woman?
It takes a bit more than clothes to make someone female.

All the Covid rules we religiously followed while shitty Tories didn't!

Seed90 · 10/06/2024 21:55

People sharing their children’s lives online

Daring to say that you can't change sex...

Kaybee50 · 10/06/2024 22:10

Smoking everywhere - including aeroplanes! Went to Australia when I was 12 and everyone around us smoked the entire flight.
Getting saucepans thrown at us by our evil home economics teacher.
Having the back of our legs smacked by the PE teacher and having naked showers after PE (in 80’s)

I know that’s a GC ironic response, but I’m always so desperate for posters like @Floorbard to actually spell out and point out what transphobia is and how it appears here. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen.

I hope we’ll look back on our totally obsessive consumption, social media “sharing” and enormous screentime with horror in a few years. Feels like a futile, distant hope, but you’ve got to have a dream. And I hope we’ll get global privacy back, and conversely rebuild local community. More of knowing our neighbours well, less of knowing every single curated detail of strangers around the world.

Marcipex · 10/06/2024 22:14

At fourteen being left to look after a seven year old, an eight year old, and an 8 month old baby that my mum was unofficially fostering, with no adult recourse if anything went wrong, not even a phone number.

MyQuaintDog · 10/06/2024 22:16

Social Services refusing to pay for babysitters for foster carers to attend a meeting if the foster parents had a child 12 and up. They can babysit.

Marcipex · 10/06/2024 22:25

A very petite 13 year old girl, who looked more like 11, having sex with every teenage boy or old bloke behind the pub, in fact any male at all.
No one cared, no one protected her, she was invited to every party, and she was described as a ’slag’. Everyone knew.

At least all those bloke would be held to account now. Hopefully.

OperationSquid · 10/06/2024 22:38

when alcohol was banned in the past in some countries , they should of kept the ban

newnamethanks · 10/06/2024 22:48

Just remembered. In the days when children were trained to be unquestioning, my mother volunteered my service as a babysitter for some neighbours who lived in the next street. I was 11 or 12. Trotted off as instructed baby asleep, parents off to theatre. After they left, it occurred to me that I had no idea of what to do if the baby woke up. Spent about 4 hours just praying he'd stay asleep. I don't think I'd ever even held a baby in my life. Fortunately, he slept, they returned, all was well. But even now my blood chills at the thought of it. I'd never met these people before, total strangers all of us. Oh the Good Old Days. I didn't do it again.

MyQuaintDog · 10/06/2024 22:53

@newnamethanks young teenagers looking after babies was not unusual back then, but your situation was. Most already had lots of experience of baby siblings and cousins.

Not flossing your teeth . Not cleaning between your teeth properly can be linked to so many preventable diseases and other conditions . For example , low birth weights, obesity, heart disease , most inflammatory diseases, diabetes , auto immune diseases . The list is endless. Sounds unbelievable but those who succumbed to Covid 19 , statistically significant numbers had gum disease .

The theory is something to do with inflamed gum tissue being a gateway for viruses and bacteria in to the blood stream. Also gum disease is basically a triggering of your immune response that raises inflammatory markers in your blood and stimulates other inflammatory / auto immune diseases .

Imagine knowing all this and still not cleaning your teeth properly .

Omg yes, and on buses too!!

Last bus home being full of drunks smoking and chucking up, and smoking weed too.

Cattenberg · 10/06/2024 23:27

On the subject of the Jeremy Kyle Show, a guy I used to know (Ben) told me he knew a couple who’d appeared on the programme. The wife had been having an affair with Ben’s brother John, but denied it. John was also asked to take part in the show, but refused.

On the show, the wife took a lie detector test - and somehow passed. Her husband was then berated for not trusting his wife!

Needanewname42 · 10/06/2024 23:29

Smoking and Non-Smoking tables next to each other in cafes and restaurants.
Really where was the logic?

Same on planes, transatlantic flight smoking area at the back of the plane. And other passengers going down the back to add to the fog.

I remember when they banded smoking in pubs. They all stank for months.
