What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

I love people’s optimism that somehow society will keep advancing and look back on earlier times and be appalled.

we could say that people will look back at women’s rights, or overt displays of racial harmony and be appalled.

We should never be complacent. Television, writing, art in general, it reflects society. A future society may judge us for being liberal, just as we sit here judging earlier times for their prejudices.

My parents had an estate car in the eighties, we used to get up in the early hours they'd line the boot with duvets etc and dB and I would sleep on the drive down to a friend's caravan in Cornwall. No belts, no car seats, just laid out in the boot in a makeshift bed, while they drive and smoked

We had the exact same !
Lying in the boot in sleeping bags and covers. With zero safety catch on inside of the boot door etc . Just told to go to sleep for the journey ( also Devon / Cornwall !)

I think it will be vaping, and a generation will be paying the price in years to come.
And fillers.

How far back are you going because I started working with children in 1985 and I was definitely checked.

1987 sorry.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 09/06/2024 20:02

That parents spent money to send their children to the Boarding schools of the 70s and 80s to be abused. 😱

Peclet · 09/06/2024 20:02

TWAW
GENOCIDE IN GAZA
SMART PHONES FOR KIDS
FOSSIL FUELS
COVID RULES

all to be regretted bitterly in the near future. With the repercussions being felt deeply.

When I was 15 my boyfriend was 23!!
WTF were we thinking.
I’ve got a 15 year old it doesn’t bear thinking about.

I expect you were thinking that a 23 year old man is hotter than a spotty 15 year old boy. 😀You are right though, I have a 23 year old DS and a 15 year old DD2, and the age gap between then seems immense. Luckily neither of them seems inclined to date much older/younger.

Peclet · 09/06/2024 20:02

VAPES

Others have said it & I have to agree that the biggest wtf of our lifetime will be the madness we all went along with during covid
You can go for a walk but don't stop for a rest on a bench or someone's Nan will die!.
You can go shopping, but only if you walk around in the direction of the arrows or someone WILL die. Bonkers!

I remember being allowed to smoke at your desk at work

We used to smoke in class when we did our A Levels!

It was for Sam Fox and I'm sure it was The Sun.

I can't believe they belted kids in school they were still belting when I was in high school.

I got the belt six on each hand, right hand so bruised I couldn't hold a pen.

I find it disgusting that in early 2000’s and earlier than that girls in school had to have naked showers after PE lesson . No privacy whatsoever , nice way to knock someone’s confidence down , NOT, forcing a girl to do something she would never willingly do if given a choice ! Sounds like a prison . And most likely a teacher watching the girls have the shower too ! Sounds very pervy in my eyes !

This is still very much a thing isn't it??

TheLaughOfRustyLee · 09/06/2024 20:05

All bundling into the back of a work van to go somewhere - usually a festival or a gig. Sitting on the spare tyre and amongst loads of crap

Boob jobs
hopefully in years to come it will viewed in the same way as Chinese foot binding.
my 12 year old daughter has suddenly understood what a boob job is. And she is utterly dumb founded that someone would cut their breast open and stuff it with plastic just to make men fancy them or look good. She is agog. She thought they were just for people who may have had a breast or both removed for medical reasons.
It’s given me a whole new perspective (and I very nearly had one 19 years ago) and have a number of friends who did too 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's always seemed weird to me. Having something inserted into your body...under the skin....just no.

bevelino · 09/06/2024 20:06

Smoking in enclosed spaces
Multiple racist shows on tv
No seat belts while driving
Page 3 girls
Teachers being allowed to hit pupils

BananaLambo · 09/06/2024 20:06

In the future I think we’ll look at many of today’s young women, with lip filler, Botox, fake tan, false eyelashes, fake eyebrows, fake hair, etc. and wonder what the hell is going on that so many of these beautiful women all try to look like the same drag queen?

The old ways really were the best, weren’t they. Let’s ignore that infant mortality was 32 in 1000 in the 1950s compared to 4 in 1000 in 2021. After all, who cares that the old ways meant many infants died unnecessarily. Let’s just get them out of their nappies asap! We will focus on that!

Edited

The 1950s were shortly after WW2, when everybody had more immediate and pressing issues to address. Thank God they did so and be grateful you are here and can live in freedom and peace.

Haha too right they were way hotter, but all parents knew and everyone was fine with it, and I’m only in my 30’s so not “that” long ago. I would not be ok with this for my DC.

You’re right there.
maybe the question should have been what was he thinking?
or what were my parents thinking to let it go on?

To be honest, I feel like I went through the seventies and eighties just accepting that at regular intervals something embarrassing or vaguely humiliating would happen. PE showers definitely fit the bill.

Marriage and pregnancy at 18,19,20
I don't see why getting married when you're a young adult is so shocking. There are tonnes of benefits to having children younger.

I had a colleague who had three children by the time he and DW were early 30s. The idea was by the time they were mid 50s DC would be grown and off their hands. Seemed like a good idea to me and still does.
