I think it’s strange there have been no reports on the rescue operation today except for the fact they are searching some caves . It is 7.42 there now and will stop at around 8 pm I guess as it gets dark at about 9 pm. Sadly I feel if he isn’t found today he can’t possibly survive .

AInightingale · 08/06/2024 17:43

Couple of reports (independent and Sun) talking about a flooded underground cave system in the vicinity which someone could fall into, I really hope it is not that. But as they can't find him on the surface, it's possible.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 08/06/2024 17:23

Everyone keeps talking about how small this island is and how hard it would be to just disappear. Although the most obvious or likely explanation is that he either fell and was injured or possibly died as a result of injuries, or that he became suddenly unwell and collapsed somehwere, neither of those things explain why he can't be found. He is unlikely to have fallen in such a way that had him immediately being swept out to sea.

Likewise, if he'd gone off alone intending to take his own life (which I find unlikely, but you just never know) I think he'd have been found by now.

I'm increasingly fearful that he's been kidnapped, or harmed in a bungled robbery or something.

Edited

I agree. It's very odd he hasn't been found. However, I don't think he's been kidnapped or killed. I wonder if he became ill or injured and managed to get somewhere sheltered from the sun (a cave, or behind a big rock, or in a crevice of a rock)? Or maybe he fell between two rocks and isn't visible. It's now deeply concerning after 3 days.

As others have said, a man on his own who considers himself fit and healthy may have wanted a challenge and not quite realised the terrain. Heat, dehydration, being in holiday mode etc can also not make you not think straight (I think alot of people go into ‘holiday mode’ abroad) so he might not have realised how challenging it would be.

The man is a doctor. Do you not think he'd realise that if he wanted to 'challenge himself' across difficult terrain, he probably shouldn't do it in the middle of the day in almost 40 degree heat, when he had no phone on him?

Are you friends with any Drs? I have friends across alot of roles in the NHS who smoke, drink lots, have taken drugs (in younger years). All of those things are high risk to your health. I would guess alot of my friends have done things on holiday that probably wasn’t always the best decision. Dr’s are human and take risks. A man who is very fit and healthy may have decided he could manage the hike. We dont know what could have happened on that hike (medical episode etc).

My point is there will be tens of thousands of people who do things on holiday this year (from all professions) that they may not do at home.

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 17:44

I think everyone's views were skewed originally as they thought he wasn't feeling well and was planning on a 20 min walk to Pedi, then getting a bus home but now we're left wondering if there was any truth in this at all. The media are a joke!

If he actually just said he was going for a walk then getting lost up a mountain is more plausible, but you can't ignore how hot it must have felt, and how a man of his knowledge in health and fitness wouldn't have thought it was a good idea, especially alone.

Christ0nABike · 08/06/2024 17:45

Did anyone follow the Esther Dingley case in the Pyrenees? This is going the same way and theories will grow ever wilder until he’s found. Esther had slipped and landed in a hidden spot - nothing more than what was suspected on day one - but by that time we’d had murder, kidnapping, secret affairs, double lives, bears, eagles and god know what else. Patience, people.

OpenRoadYeehaw · 08/06/2024 17:45

It’s been reported they’re bringing in a thermal imaging helicopter because it’s too hot for the volunteers and dogs.

EdithBond · 08/06/2024 17:45

RoseAndRose · 08/06/2024 16:19

Yes, it did.

Initially the search was along the wide, frequently walked path from the beach to Pedi (when the beach was his last known location)

Then, after his presence in Pedi was confirmed, it switched from there to the trails between Pedi and Simi. They seem to have discounted the road (maybe based on last CCTV) and are looking at the peninsular, which is rocky with steep areas and very little shade. And possibly tunnels (crevasses?)

(I can't make sense of mention of the island though - it doesn't look as if you can get there other than by boat. And if he'd caught another water taxi, then surely the boatman would have come forward)

On discounting the road, I expect they’ve thoroughly searched the road between Pedi and Symi with dogs etc. I did wonder if he might be out of sight near the road. The Meandering Max video someone shared on a previous thread showed quite a few derelict buildings beside the road. And it occurred to me he might have got caught short and looked for somewhere out of sight of the road, then perhaps collapsed or injured his leg etc. I guess the cctv of him at the end of the harbour heading onto a track suggests he didn’t take the road (the quickest, easiest route to Symi. But it’s possible he went up there to explore for a bit, then came back and set off on the road. I know he’d likely be caught on the cctv coming back, but not if he doubled back to the road a different way, that has no cctv.

The Pyrenees are huge though. All I keep hearing about this island is how small it is.

I think the people who say that other people are enjoying it, are the ones that people should be worried about .

THe thought of Someone enjoying it wouldn't even have crossed my mind.

Everyone is very worried about him. And everyone is hoping he is found.

Why on earth would anyone enjoy that he is missing.

I just went round to visit my mum. Even my 80 year old mother is checking the news on her phone, hoping that he has been found

Edited

It’s just so sad and worrying.

He’s obviously incredibly well liked. He comes across as a really good egg.

The situation is obviously extremely worrying. Still hoping there is a positive outcome and he will be rescued from whatever predicament he is in.

Agreed. I once got into trouble swimming across a small bay. What the heck was I thinking? I'm not even a strong swimmer.

Yes and she was on a long distance multiday hike, so there was a much wider search area

Sunnyandsilly · 08/06/2024 17:50

It’s astonishing they haven’t found him yet. There are so so many people now looking. And it’s been over 3 days.

Christ0nABike · 08/06/2024 17:51

Also, not sure he’s ever worked as a doctor. He finished medical school in 1985 and joined the BBC as a producer before moving into presenting sciencey programmes, then got famous for diet stuff. I don’t believe he’s ever been a GP. Not hugely relevant other than people keep saying it.

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 17:51

XjustagirlX · 08/06/2024 17:41

I don’t think he was ill and was heading back home.

a witness at the original beach said she saw him climb the steps have a look around then come get his stuff speak to his wife and set off walking. This says to me he was looking at where to walk to.

i really think he spotted agia marina on his boat ride in the morning, was bored on the beach (he had no phone) and fancied a walk. He was walking fast with intention like he knew where he was going.

his wife said he went for a walk not that he felt ill. Also I wonder if he told his friends at the beach that he felt a bit ill so as not to appear rude that he was a bit bored at the beach.

This actually makes more sense than anything I've read so far. I mean, I've no idea if it's correct, but it certainly makes sense. It still doesnt answer where he is though!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 08/06/2024 17:52

He’s obviously incredibly well liked. He comes across as a really good egg.

He always seems like such a nice man and his research on diet, health and wellbeing has changed so many people's lives for the better. It's beyond sad.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2024 17:52

I'm not persuaded all doctors are sensible all of the time. One has only to think about the decisions of a medical couple who left an infant alone while they had dinner.

I feel deeply for his family and hope he is found soon to bring closure. The best one can hope for now I suspect t is that he had a Reggie Perrin moment and purposely disappeared. Stress of fame and all that.

I think he trained as a psychiatrist but never practiced

Because they write things about ‘plot twists’ or ‘twist and turns’. Because in the past their only response to an update on another story was the eyes emoji. Because the way they’re speculating is wild and designed to get attention. Etc.

This isn’t a tv series.

I think he would have tried to alert people to his presence by now if he was sheltering , unless he has passed out or been injured some how.

Agree. He’d have left the umbrella up outside his shelter.

He still graduated from medical school as a Doctor of Medicine though, so he'd have a solid understanding of the dangers of doing sometihing strenuous in extreme heat.

IDontSleepIDream · 08/06/2024 17:58

I was hoping they’d find him today on the mountain path. They said it was ‘inexplicable’ how anyone would try and walk it, BUT, at the end of the day, it IS a path not just some random rocks, no matter how dangerous it is obviously people have walked it before for there to be a path there in the first place?

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 08/06/2024 17:58

I think I'm gonna have to step away from these threads. Unfortunately people are treating them like their own personal blog. There's a lot of bullshit being spouted, stories made up and it's beyond unhealthy. Think some people need to have a word with themselves, no matter what they have been through.

There shouldn't be any need for someone to have more than 5/10 comments on threads like these, so if people are, perhaps step away from the internet and make yourself a cup of tea.

The persistent repeat posts from certain people, plus the ridiculous arguments are just adding a load of basically useless content. Reading the thread is just absolutely pointless at this stage and any updates or news are being lost amongst the fluff.

turnipsandtiaras · 08/06/2024 17:58

He suffered transient amnesia bought on by cold water (ie extreme temperature change) a few years ago. I feel it may have happened again, or unfortunately when a previous episode has occured it can lead to further more serious problems, like Andrew Marr (I think that was his name).

I agree, it’s not exactly common behaviour for the first day on your holiday with your partner and close friends. Perhaps there were tensions in the group or with MM and his wife.

How in heavens name do you know what is common behaviour for strangers?

This situation is really bringing out the posters who can't concieve that others might live different lives
