Irrationally upset over a washing up liquid bottle…

Ok, so I’ll preface this by saying I know how utterly ridiculous this is, but I need an outlet for my grief.

Years ago I purchased a Limited Edition Fairy liquid bottle, one of those tall, white ones with the baby on it, which I’ve happily and diligently decanted washing up liquid into ever since. It’s been sitting there on the windowsill of the last three houses I’ve lived in, and although it’s just a plastic bottle, it’s just brought me a little bit of joy. It’s silly, but it’s mine.

Until yesterday morning, when my well-meaning MIL saw it beside the new bottle (waiting to be decanted) and threw it into the recycling bin! I didn’t realise this until my “D”P casually mentioned this morning that he’s made a quirky little LAMPSHADE for a lamp we have in the garage, using that “old washing up liquid bottle”. A fucking LAMPSHADE. Out of my prized possession. It doesn’t even look good, because why on earth would it? It looks shit.

I’m irrationally heartbroken about the death of this bottle that’s just been sitting there for years, minding its own business, harming nobody. I know, I know, it’s just a fucking plastic bottle, but it was MY plastic bottle and he’s watched me decant the washing up liquid into it for years. He KNEW it was important to me. But because it’s just a plastic bottle, I’m going to have to bloody get over it, aren’t I. He’s already ordered a replacement, apparently, but it’s not the same, it’s not the same bottle. I’ve shed an embarrassing number of tears over it and as it’s still so raw, I feel like I’ll never forgive the twat for it.

Cheer me up a little, let me know I’m not alone and come share your stories of silly things that to everyone else seems trivial and ridiculous, but for you has been a source of heartache and woe…😢

I completely understand where you're coming from. Similar happened to me with a dried milk tin. But I really need to see a photo of the shit lamp😆

If I hadn’t been so upset I would’ve taken a photo before I cut it down, but absolutely failed to see how it could EVER be funny. It looked utterly ridiculous, almost as ridiculous as how I will have looked marching out there with snot and tears streaming down my face 😬

But DH presumably found it in the recycling bin? If he didn’t know his Mum had put it there, is it possible he thought YOU had thrown it out because it had sprung a leak or something.

He’s sorry, it seems.

I know how upsetting it is when you break or lose something precious, but all the anger and grief in the world won’t replace it
( I would however ‘ask’ MIL not to throw things in your house out without asking you first, that’s just common courtesy).

But any one with common sense would ask their partner “hey, I’ve spotted this in the recycling. Is it supposed to be here?”

I know my dh would

I have that same bottle! Refilled regularly.
Only a few weeks ago a workman commented on it.. saying he grew up with one in his parents house.
You have my sympathy.. I love my bottle! x

FriedSprout · 08/06/2024 11:32

I feel for you, I also have a vintage fairy liquid bottle that I refill as required.

Yes! I’ve had friends comment on it and ask where I got it, and I had this silly little dream that my children would scrap over it when they’re older and moving into their own places. It’s so ridiculous but I knew I’d find people on here who would understand!

Why did he think it would be a good idea to make a lampshade from it? Does he usually do junk makes @lifestooshorttodickaboutwithaubergines ?

That's the sort of thing my ex would have done and then would have been hurt/taken great offence that I wasn't taking a full page ad out in The Times about what a great lampshade my darling thoughtful husband had made for me.

RainBow725 · 08/06/2024 11:35

I get you. I dropped a shopping bag in Matalan a few weeks ago. It was empty. It's just a patterned oilcloth type tote but I've had it for about 25 years. I was so upset but then stupidly relieved when I found someone had handed it in and I got it back. Gin Have a bottle of gin to replace your washing up liquid bottle x

roastedrapidly · 08/06/2024 11:36

I've just seen the eBay image, and I'd have assumed it was for the recycling bin too - I don't think your MIL is to blame.

But you DH is a knobhead, firstly for not knowing the bottle was a permanent fixture and secondly for doing arts a crafts from the recycling bin....is he 8 years old?

CJ0374 · 08/06/2024 11:36

I can't even imagine how you'd make a lampshade out of a washing up bottle! 🤔 I too was hoping to see a photo of his creation.

friskybivalves · 08/06/2024 11:37

There is one for £32 on eBay?

Just for you, I’ve retrieved it from the bin…not in situ but you can see the general idea. Utter madness, and a shit idea even if it hadn’t been made from something I had a sentimental attachment to 🙄
Dodgy DIY “brainwaves” will need a conversation all of its own!

Nor me, they're far too narrow.

adviceatthislatestage · 08/06/2024 11:39

So annoying that your DH did that- and to turn it into a lampshade?!

However, I wonder if he was the buyer for my unused Vintage Fairy Liquid bottle , which I sold a few days ago on eBay?

Although didn't state limited edition on bottle, so probs not.

The whole sorry affair happened over the course of this morning, it’s a lovely bottle though! My bad boy was a 1 litre one. Sigh.

Oh dear OP! 🤭

On the plus side, you have lovely nails.

realw · 08/06/2024 11:41

Last year my mother threw away fold-up London Underground map I have had since first time coming to London in 1995! She was visiting me, went tidying in my draws, saw my somewhat-disintegrating map and threw it out 🤯

Durdledore · 08/06/2024 11:41

I feel you - my cleaner threw away some plastic bottles of shampoo/conditioner that use to refill in a local refill shop. I’m not emotionally attached to them but I was avoiding waste and it felt horrible to buy new ones.

BUT can I just comment off-topic and say I love your DH for his hobby of reusing and repurposing and generally using his spare time to make stuff. Or is it too soon? 😂

I was thinking this too, he may have thought you threw it out and then he decided to do something thoughtful with it but has now messed up.

I'm raging just reading this on your behalf op.

Honestly do wouldn't hear the end of it if he did that

It isn’t too soon, I need something to diffuse my upset! I know he feels gutted that it’s happened and he really is one for repurposing and saving money where he can…why buy a lampshade when you can raid the recycling bin?! This is a double sting as it was my bottle and also quite a shit idea 😂

I see what you mean; like, ta-dah, here’s a lamp! It’s a lamp that he has in the garage for when he’s watching motorbike racing in there, or I could’ve seen it as a kind gesture. It’s more that he was too tight to buy a proper shade 😂

It's only a possession. Yes you feel really upset when sonething you've had for years gets broken but it's only a thing.
