I don't smell down there but would like to feel fresher during the day.

What does everyone else use ?

Don’t people just wash in the shower? Loads of soap and water in the ‘nooks and crannies’? Surely that’s sufficient? I would be too embarrassed to buy a product called ‘femfresh’ it sounds far too Stepford Wife for me and the use of the word ‘fresh’ gives me the ick for some reason! It’s a fanny, not a salad bar ffs.

It's a totally unnecessary and harmful product

It's a unique area of the body that's pretty delicate. Some of us really do need more than water and find that shower gel or soap irritates or even inflames the area.

at the risk of TMI but safe in anonymity, some of us have incontinence. A vulva that has been marinating in urine and up against incontinence pads all day every day does need a bit more than water to get clean.

Likewise after a period.

And what should the people whose vulvas light on fire at the mere whiff of a soap bubble do?

It’s just soap. I know using any soap on your flaps is controversial for a lot of Mumsnet users but some of us need it. There’s piss, blood, semen, sweat, fanny juice all round there on any given day.

Zoflorabore · 08/06/2024 01:32

Does everyone on here seem to suffer with thrush? I’ve managed to get to the age of 46 and have never had it, I give my bits a bloody good scrub too with anything I like, I must have a super fanny.

the word vulva though, I know it’s anatomically correct but it reminds me of something a car would be called- like a Vauxhall Vulva or something!

I actually used Femfresh wash in the shower today, haven’t used it in years. I didn’t feel any fresher for using it, bought my fave Badedas in Tesco and will stick to that.

I know people are very against it. I use the spray deodorant on hot days, I just like the freshness/coolness. I spray it in the fold part between my legs and crotch.

I’ve bought the wipes before but they’re very thin flimsy, and I’ve also bought the ‘intimate shower gel’ or whatever it’s called and found it a little drying on my skin. Now I just use water and a cloth in the shower, and Dettol and shower gel as normal with my loofah on the rest of my body.

Thoughts and prayers to your skin’s microbiome! Nobody needs to be washing in Dettol.

grinandslothit · 08/06/2024 01:45

It's marketing nonsense and no I don't believe using anything else but femfresh is giving someone thrush.

The main ingredients are water and sodium lareth sulfate which is the main ingredient in most body washes, soap, etc.

WetBandits · 08/06/2024 01:49

Can I just say that almost every woman I treat for BV has been using Femfresh. They get sent home with a course of metronidazole and strict instructions to bin the Femfresh. Ghastly stuff.

If you must use anything, make it Sanex Zero.

Paninaro94 · 08/06/2024 02:08

What’s “ghastly” about it in comparison to regular shower gel?

CurlewKate · 08/06/2024 05:11

Does "delicate vulval skin" have a "unique ph value" that needs to be "balanced"?

Obviously washing is essential, and people should use whatever product they want. But I hate the way companies home straight in on women's insecurities and market directly at them.

If I use the non probiotic Femfresh, I get thrush with them too. Believe me, don't believe me, whatever.

There are other more expensive probiotics designed for washing the genitals that also don't give me thrush but why would I spend more money when the Femfresh Soothing wash (which is probiotic) keeps me clean and doesn't give me thrush?

2pence · 08/06/2024 08:05

CurlewKate · 07/06/2024 22:07

@2pence "It's not misogynistic to say women need to wash. We do."

No. But it is misogynist to say that our bodies are uniquely disgusting and need special products to wash with.

But I do need that product. It has to be a probiotic product or I am left itching and raw.

I find other products strip the mucous layer and create irritation.

Also, you do need to wash well because you can get a buildup of smegma under the clitoral hood in the same way that men who don't wash under their foreskins do.

HedgehogB · 08/06/2024 08:15

I have never thought Femfresh were implying we smell down there? For me and it seems many others I use the gel wash because ordinary soap gives me raging thrush. I only use it on the outside parts. On sweaty days I take the wipes out in my bag. On hot days I DO smell sometimes, or if I have tights on. Lucky people who don’t. Water wouldn’t cut it. (For what it’s worth I’ve told my son and DH they can use Femfresh on their bits because it’s gentler.) I wouldn’t use the spray…. I agree that’s unnecessary. If I had a daughter I’d be advising her to steer clear of anything like that.

Quornflakegirl · 08/06/2024 08:22

2 pence are you the bloke CEO of Fem Fresh telling women how to wash their fannies?

I have always used water and then soap on surrounding areas and have never had thrush or felt unclean.

WetBandits · 08/06/2024 08:23

Paninaro94 · 08/06/2024 02:08

What’s “ghastly” about it in comparison to regular shower gel?

Regular scented shower gel is just as bad. Femfresh imo is the worst of the bunch as it is so heavily targeted with its pink packaging and even the prefix ‘Fem’, as if women need to use it make their vulvas smell artificial.

I’ve just Googled it and am pleased they’ve brought out a 0% version as that’s possibly less problematic for pH, but their marketing techniques are pretty unpleasant. I wouldn’t even recommend the 0% version to any patient of mine because I don’t want to promote such a brand. I recommend Sanex Zero to either sex as using Lynx and the like is just as rubbish for men.

bilgewater · 08/06/2024 08:23

Good god no. I can't believe it still exists as a brand.

I'm a bisexual menopausal woman. Some women don't wash well. Trust me on this.

What does "fresh" mean in this context, then?

2pence · 08/06/2024 09:04

I imagine it means fresh. Clean. Not like piss or yeast or a bag of prawn cocktail crisps.

@HedgehogB "I have never thought Femfresh were implying we smell down there"

Everyone gets smelly down there. This is not a feminist issue. Men are marketed to with vile body washes like lynx and so on that can't be good for their skin either.

If you want to frame this as a feminist issue then let women have a choice in what they use. Plenty of posters have said on this thread that they get thrush using any other product but femfresh. I don't like the stuff and only use unscented soaps, but bloody good for them if they've found a product that makes their lives better.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/06/2024 09:56

You shower in Dettol????

That's just what I was thinking 🤔

MegaClutterSlut · 08/06/2024 10:00

No matter what I use it makes me itchy. Have tried Simple body wash with 0% soap and 'intimate body wash', still itch!

Have you tried a probiotic wash? Everything, EVERYTHING, makes me itchy and sore except a probiotic wash.

There's also a brilliant vaginal pessary called Canesflor that helps keep the itch away and treat it when it's bad, but it's pricey.
