Thread 2 - Michael Mosley missing after disappearing on holiday walk

1000 replies

Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

Checking in. The media speculation is getting bizarre.

Let's not make it another thread like the poor Nicola Bulley one. Stop speculating! No one knows!

How are people so utterly invested and obsessed to come out with this?
Jesus. It's terrible and I really hope he's found soon but the level of obsession in some people is downright bizzare

I know - really not sure what's wrong with me! I am the type who goes off walking with my dog to quiet inaccessible places, and plus other circumstances losing someone close... so maybe to do with that.
I just feel kind of obsessed checking news! Just hoping for a good outcome.

Trying81 · 08/06/2024 08:28

The Symi Facebook group shows a lot of locals were out looking on the first night / day 2 and not just focussing on the route he was later shown on CCTV to have got past

If you think this thread shows obsession you clearly don't know anything true crime/mystery fora

Thinking about possible routes a missing person might have taken is hardly obsessive, it's interested thinking especially if you like the person or know the place or enjoy walking on holiday

Imo it's more odd not to understand that people are interested in more than their own lives

daisychain01 · 08/06/2024 08:30

100% @Zonder It is maddening the sheer ignorance about countries around the world, the judgement and blinkered views people hold based on absolutely zero knowledge. Really insulting.

And the judgement about MM's "family and so-called friends" and what people sitting in their homes obsessively hammering away at their keyboards think other people should be doing without any actual knowledge of the true facts. Cloud cuckoo land.

greengreyblue · 08/06/2024 08:31

Sofa detectives out in force. Really hope he is found alive. Had a lot of time for his honest and helpful broadcasts.

Nothing's wrong with you, as I said in my post above my question would be what's wrong with people who can't understand an interest in things

This is so true. The Greeks are pulling out all the stops they can, and I saw somewhere yesterday evening that the mayor of Symi's daughter said she and local volunteers would continue searching into the night. I can't remember the source for that, I'm afraid, before anyone asks.

Just on that point of volunteers i think it’s good to mention that - other than the cops who are not really concentrated in huge numbers anywhere but the big cities, certainly not a tiny place in Dodekanisos - a large number of the people involved in this search will be volunteers, even in the specialist teams. Same with the firefighters every summer too. It’s nice to see people like this poster and some others take the time to remember that although those in charge would have us believe that the crisis days are over, Greece is still v much not a financially happy country, people going without many of the essential critical services etc, and where there is money to be spent, our wise PM and his cabal dictate that it will go into the army or the police or the church. So it’s pretty wild to compare search and rescue services with a way richer Northern European country (that is also a single/almost single land mass)

Zonder · 08/06/2024 08:26

To counter some pretty nasty and rude racist comments I think. Greece isn't a third world country made up of incompetent people who can't conduct a search as well as Britain would.

I haven't seen the racist comments but it's obvious that a tiny place isn't going to have the resources on hand for any kind of investigation wherever in the world it is ( except the island on death in paradise maybe) so there will naturally be a slower start than you'd find in London or wherever

It's factual not a criticism of the loacls

mpsw · 08/06/2024 08:37

Willmafrockfit · 08/06/2024 07:28

but they werent searching that particular area before

The press haven't reported on what areas have been covered by helicopter, drone, or on the first night, heat-seeking imagery.

We do know that searchers on the ground concentrated on the route from what was then the last confirmed sighting on the first day. Whilst others in parallel were establishing if sightings in Pedi were genuine - at least one wasn't, male holidaymakers age 60+ in shorts/baseball cap/blue t-shirt can't be that uncommon - and then reassigning the ground searchers.

I'd seen reports that it was house CCTV that had put him by the start of the difficult trail; now it seems that a news agency has verified that this is genuine footage, and that is concerning.

Watchkeys · 08/06/2024 08:38

@zonder

It's not racism to identify that some places have more resources than others.

They brought search resources from Athens. It's not a tiny backwards island trying on its own.

Does Greece have less resources than Britain for searching? How do you know? There have been some pretty unsuccessful searches in the UK.

CurrentHun · 08/06/2024 08:43

I am so sorry for Dr Mosley whatever the outcome for him of this is. I very much hope he’ll be found alive and safe, because after this number of days, something very dangerous must have happened to him.

I have every sympathy for his family being put through this agony of waiting for news. Not that it is directly relevant, because every missing person is a tragedy, but I have it on good authority from someone who worked with him, that Dr M is a very nice person. I think that comes across in his work, and am not surprised that so many people feel affection and concern for him.

Dustyblue · 08/06/2024 08:43

@barleyrice Yes you're right about his programs on SBS, just not so much the other channels iykwim.

I haven't found him to be much different than other 'diet doctors' who sell snake oil, AHEM I mean books and good advice, to the public.

Then again many people say he changed their lives with his advice, and I wouldn't argue with that.

Really hoping he's found alive.

I agree, it’s like Nicola bulley all over again. From people becoming armchairs sleuths to attacking his family

it’s one thing to chat about it, as it is really curious, and obviously concerning, as he is a human, but the level of obsession is unbelievable. People pulling up maps, acting like they are giving guidance to the search parties, constantly refreshing their phones, attacking his family, it’s awful.

@Zonder I actually agree on the stuff you’re posting on this thread so I don’t want this comment to read as if i’m challenging the rest of your position :)

but i think generally it’s a safe assumption that greek resources for most public health/public safety related things are in a worse state/more limited than the UK. And I’m fully aware of how screwed the UK is!

of course, my perspective /opinion only!

I disagree- people care about him and are baffled by the mystery. It’s human nature to speculate on this sort of thing. We want to know what’s happened. The “attacking his family” was one poster only which I agree is out of order.

Willmafrockfit · 08/06/2024 08:48

worrying news now, even locals would not have taken the path they think he has taken.
deeply inadvisable route

so worrying for his family

Manhere2024 · 08/06/2024 08:49

Greek news source:

”Mr. Gryllis emphasized that on Friday the authorities gained access to audio-visual camera footage which clearly showed the journalist heading towards a path near the Pedi area, which leads to a mountain in the area. Thus, the investigations now turned exclusively towards the mountain.

"I believe that today we will have a result", assessed Mr. Gryllis and emphasized:

"It is a mountain with a particularly complex morphology and difficult points. It includes a path that leads to the Ancient Marina and another that leads to its top."

For his part, Mr. Tsiboukas noted:
"Until yesterday, unfortunately, we were going blind. Since yesterday, we have been oriented in a direction that we did not calculate from the beginning, because we had no evidence to lead us to it.

Since yesterday, the investigations have become very intensive. 23 people attempted the mountain on Friday and today, Saturday, a 2nd operation is being conducted. In addition to pedestrians, they also operate drones.

It is a strange area, a mountain with many "blind" and dangerous spots, which must be "combed" meter by meter. I tried to climb this particular mountain in advance and I tell you that it is very difficult and very dangerous".

I imagine they are more specialised in looking for people on Greek Islands than the UK is

I quite agree. I didn't mean to come across as nasty, but I found the poster I was responding to rather ignorant.

Woke up hoping for some news. Regretfully, I read some crazy twitter stuff last night about how his disappearance could be connected to his pro-vaccine stance. I won't be reading anymore of that today.

Watchkeys · 08/06/2024 08:50

@Zonder

I don't know. I said it wouldn't be racist to say that one place has more resources than another.

Even if it's incorrect, it's not racism.

It's not a tiny place. It's part of a massive country

maudelovesharold · 08/06/2024 08:53

I imagine people go to islands like Symi to ‘get away from it all’, so it’s hardly surprising that it takes a while for search operations to get up to speed. I’m sure the search is being conducted in a logical and thorough way. You have sad stories much closer to home, where it has taken a long while to locate victims of accidents occurring while they were driving or walking in rural areas. He probably tried to find shelter somewhere en route, if the track was taking him longer than expected, so he may be difficult to spot. Hoping against hope he beats the odds.
