Does this meal have a name?

After a fridge meal a few years ago I used ready made pasty, put a tin of tomatoes on it and then added onions, mushrooms, whatever was in the fridge and topped with cheese. I called it mummy surprise.
Now my kids are 15 and mummy surprise is not a great name anymore. Pasty fridge use up sounds awful.
Does this meal have a real name, or can you think of a better name?

OhFensa · 06/06/2024 18:17

oh pastry, not pasta. ignore me. i would just call that bad pizza.

mindexplode · 06/06/2024 18:18

Pastry I think, sorry spelling isn't my strong point. The sheet ready made stuff, either filo or shortcross

I call that a vegetable tart. 🙂 We do that as well to use up different odds and ends in the fridge. Whatever elderly vegetables or straggling chunks of cheese are hanging around waiting for a new purpose. I roast or sauté the veg before layering it on to the pastry. Sometimes we add meat like crumbled sausage or bacon as well.

For a base I tend to spread a sauce of some kind over the short crust pastry. Pesto, a red sauce, cheese sauce, etc. Again, whatever needs to be used up. It makes me feel quite virtuous to use up all the bits! 😂

Savoury tarte tatin?

Needmorelego · 06/06/2024 18:19

I'd call that a (puff?) pastry tart.

I'm loving all the ideas but yes a flat sideless tart. That's not an attractive name 😂

Have the kids mentioned its name of mummy surprise?

I do a 'mummy salad' my 16 year old still asks for it. She could just say 'your salad' but mummy salad 'sounds more exciting!'

If your kids want you to stop saying it then yeah, lots of great suggestions here.
If they haven't mentioned it, keep it as mummy surprise. They may well make other for their kids if they have any, and they will call it 'mummy/daddy surprise' too. Or even sweeter 'granny's surprise' 🥰
