Age also is only one factor. For potential medical conditions.

Anyone can fall at any age

My friend in this thirties when missing on a coastal walk in a Spanish island.

It was suspected that he fell.

Justrelax · 07/06/2024 10:22

He seems like a good man. I hope he is ok but I know that these stories don't tend to end well. I always hope for the miracle though.

(As an aside, I do wish my older relatives would carry their phones as a safety precaution, but we don't know what happened here.)

It’s the DM’s raison d’etre to amp up the scant information they have to drum up clicks. I wouldn’t trust them to report the time of day correctly….

Agree!! Most hateful paper ever

For those saying 50s and 60s is not old, well the man is nearly 70 and has had some health difficulties. It would be a strain to walk in that heat in the middle of the day for anyone I would have thought.

What health difficulties? He does HIIT. Do you mean the conditions he reversed by doing his diet? He’s not some infirm fragile thing.

And nearly everyone has had health difficulties at some stage in their life.

These heatstroke etc comments are odd. Very odd. Because logically he’d have been found if it was that.

Why would he logically have been found if he got heatstroke.

Heatstroke can make you faint.

If he fainted he could have fallen off he coastal walk and into the sea.

oberstocto · 07/06/2024 10:29

I have just seen this. How sad. I hope he's found safe and sound

MyQuaintDog · 07/06/2024 10:31

I think people are underestimating the impact of age. Nearly everything is harder to recover from as you get older. From wounds taking longer to heal, to the body dealing with heatstroke. You do not have to be infirm to feel the impact of your age.
I think a lot of people on MN see age very superficially i.e. you can walk, exercise, and look fine so your age has no impact. Sadly that is not true. Seventies is also an age where things can change very quickly.

Bouledeneige · 07/06/2024 10:32

I thought heatstroke and falling into the DS. But if you watch the YouTube video the path isn't that close and sheer to the sea.

why are you using the high-five emoji?

What??? It’s praying hands!!!

How old are you?

, the missing man wasn't doing anything very taxing and strenuous and stupid like climbing mount kilimanjaro.

He went for a coastal walk , which he has done many, many times before.

People in their sixties are able to go for a walk!

Considering how emojis are supposed to remove ambiguity about the intention behind someone's message, this one seems to be spectacularly badly designed. I wonder how many people have alienated friends and family by using it in tragic circumstances 😁

Not in anyway defending the Daily Mail but MM actually writes a regular column for them so they may well know more than is being reported !

shearwater2 · 07/06/2024 10:38

It doesn't sound to me like he was doing anything reckless, just a short walk that would usually be comfortable for him. I really hope he is found.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 07/06/2024 10:43

I experienced heatstroke at the cricket in Cardiff of all places last Summer. It was mid 30s, blazing sun and as I staggered to the toilets to douse myself in cold water, there were several men slumped on the ground being attended to by St John's ambulance. I would consider myself sensible, was wearing a hat and staying hydrated and all of a sudden I was battling not to lose consciousness. It can creep up on you.

I'd forgotten until people started talking about it on this thread. I'm in my 40s.

shearwater2 · 07/06/2024 10:44

Oaktree55 · 07/06/2024 09:50

If I were with a relative in their late 60’s, knew had medical issues and it was pushing 40c and they weren’t used to the heat and they said they were tired (often cover up for not feeling well) and they had no phone I would escort them back or at v least say text us when you’re home.

And what if they still wanted to go for a walk? They have agency and are not children. You can only at best make a suggestion, it's up to them.

My FIL is now 80 and often disappears off on his own for a bit on holiday and doesn't always remember to have his phone with him or switched on as a younger person would. We are not responsible for him, he's an adult.

RacingLine · 07/06/2024 10:45

poor man and his poor wife and children, how terrible.

Heatstroke happens much quicker than you expect and despite being medically qualified, it can absolutely take you by surprise.

User5463463 · 07/06/2024 10:45

Watched the Youtube video and bits of the walk look steep but the path is set far back from the water so it seems virtually impossible to fall in by slipping.

The missing man wasn't doing anything very taxing and strenuous and stupid like climbing mount kilimanjaro.

Did you watch the video walk of the same path? Taking the heat into account, looks very strenuous even for a younger person in perfect health. This was a man in his late 60s (not elderly but definitely not young) who had to go back due to feeling unwell or tired.

The video does show the beach being tiny with no infrastructure aside from a small cafe. 6 hours is a lot of time to be on a beach that size, although one possibility is that the group was waiting for the sun to set so the temps would be more bearable to walk back.

Yeah I've been on the Greek Islands.

And I've been on the spanish islands.

Most coastal walks are like that.

They go up and down, and they have hills and steps.

It's not that taxing.

You see loads of people in their fifties, sixties and seventies walking those routes.

MabelMaybe · 07/06/2024 10:49

When I heard about his walk, it struck me that it's the sort of thing my husband would do too. There may be buses or a car available but no, there's a walk up over the mountain and off he'll go. Had he not returned by mid-afternoon I'd presume he'd wandered off the path because he saw a small chapel or a vulture or just wanted to sit and look at the view. It seems a sufficiently busy path though, that he should have been seen along it by other people.

damebarbaracartlandsbiggestfan · 07/06/2024 10:50

Thanks to Puppetqueen for posting the video of the route that MM was understood to be taking. I've seen a quote from someone in the media, suggesting its a fairly easy walk, but that's clearly very subjective - I'm fit but scared of heights and would take a path like that that VERY cautiously. It looks very dangerous to me, in places. Having said that, there are apparently several witnesses placing him in Pedi.
Hoping and praying for a good outcome, and that his wife has lots of support x

Carly944 · 07/06/2024 10:51

Its a strange one as its such a small island. And you'd imagine there'd be lots of boats around too.

Are they going to get divers to look

User14March · 07/06/2024 10:54

It’s populated that’s the puzzle for me. Not remote.

they are now, yes.

Summeratlast24 · 07/06/2024 10:56

He had several medical difficulties which pps have referred to during the thread and I read that he had had diabetes and high blood pressure, the ‘funny turn’ after swimming where he lost his memory and that all his male relatives were dead by 72.

Anyway I am also in denial that 60s is ‘not old’ but sadly that’s not true. Not that you can’t go for a walk, just that it will put more strain on your body if it’s extremely hot and you are dehydrated for example.
