@Acapulco12

"I really don’t think this is funny. There’s a time and a place for humour and I don’t think this is at all an appropriate time for it. There are lots of people hoping he will be found safe and well - probably close to millions, and I don’t think that’s an exaggeration - and this seems a particularly bad time to indulge in a bit of black humour, however light-hearted it’s intended to be."

I can't speak for @Levo but I interrupted their comment as making light of an odd suggestion by a different poster that MM's disappearance may be related to him having annoyed those with vested interests in junk food, not making light of MM's disappearance in itself.

Yeah I saw that too and also wondered that.
I don’t at all want to be an annoying,
hardline ‘thread police’ user who sweeps in to tell people what they must or mustn’t say, because that takes away all the spontaneity and enjoyment of using Mumsnet. However, I didn’t think now was the best moment to continue that sort of joke/conversation, and it came across as insensitive, because we’re all still waiting to find out what happened to him and we want him to be okay, but with each bit of time that passes, it’s more difficult for us all to hold onto the feeling that everything will turn out well.

@Acapulco12 It was a shut down comment to the drama lamas. He could still be alive you know.

Yes I know and hope that very much, but it just came across as a bit of a flippant unfunny comment.

@Byronada are you saying people shouldn't show any interest at all? Or that any interest in the case is inappropriate?

No, of course not. It's natural to be curious and he was a well known public figure. An inspirational man who has changed many people's lives. His family must be worried sick.

I just find examining Google maps to look at the terrain a bit much. I remember how out of hand the speculation got on the Nicola Bulley disappearance and it reminds me of that. I would hate that to happen.

But it's only my view. Others will feel differently.

QforCucumber · 06/06/2024 15:11

I don't get how people are suspicious about his phone, we've just come back from holiday - most days my phone and apple watch were left in the room as had no need for them, we'd go for walks and be out and about without it all day, isn't that just normal holiday behaviour?

Not for me, no. I always carry my phone with me.

BeethovenNinth · 07/06/2024 07:18

I don’t think there is anything remotely strange about a short walk without a phone. Or a long walk alone. It’s only ever recently we have become glued to tech and unable to be alone. It’s why we are all so anxious.

the heat is worrying though. I don’t believe foul play but I do worry that he has begun to feel unwell and dehydrated

I wasn't examining anything, just looking up where the resort was and you can see a path marked. Why are there always these kind of judgemental comments on threads like this 🤷‍♀️

That's interesting as I think looking at Google maps/earth is a really helpful way to understand more about stuff in the news or books or after having had a conversation about a place you haven't been to

How could broadening your knowledge ever be too much? Would you have thought the same if she'd got out an atlas to see how hilly the place is?

Not in the least anxious in my case, but always helpful to have I feel…I may be able to help someone else, who left theirs behind….

Could the people who are only posting here to tell us whether or not they carry their phone, maybe use a different font or something so the rest of us can skim over their posts?

Honestly. The thread is about a well liked, high profile person who is missing. People are checking the thread to discuss the situation and hopefully see any updates, not to find out if you take your phone on walks.

Well said! I woke up to check this thread and it's still full of people discussing whether or not they take their phone on a walk.
Look MM didn't have his phone. That's all their is to say about that. Yes, it would have been useful if he had it. But he didn't.

tuvamoodyson · 07/06/2024 07:32

The first few lines should tell you…

As I said, it's a personal view. It's natural to speculate but I remember how far some people can take it. It sounds like that's not the case here but it's not something I would do.

Anyway, I just hope for his family that he is found safe and well but as time passes it becomes more worrying.

GameOfJones · 07/06/2024 07:33

He has really helped me make steps to improve my health. There are things I do specifically every day because of his Just one Thing podcast (eat an apple, do some stretches, get outside etc.) He's got a warm and comforting voice and has been good company on my walks and drives.

So I am worried, as although I don't know him, his voice is part of my everyday life. People can know that the outlook is not very good, while still holding on to some hope.

TheBloatedMiddle · 07/06/2024 07:34

greatvisuals · 06/06/2024 22:45

I suppose because it could happen to any of us.

A European break, a pop to the beach, a wave and 'see you later' fully expecting to meet up in a few hours.

It's the everydayness about the event that's drawing us all in. It feels really close and real.

My dad went missing when we were on a trip to France. He just wandered off out of a museum and vanished. The truly wonderful police found him within 3 hours. He had a transitory amnesia episode and didn't know where he was. They found him sitting on a bench eating an icecream. A horrifyingly scary 3 hours for us though.

I am thinking of Dr Mosley's family. Thanks

Bouledeneige · 07/06/2024 07:36

The latest reports suggest that he was being very ambitious to walk from the beach is such extreme heat. Most people only access it by boat as it's very rocky and inhospitable to walk. It was 40-47 degrees and he was walking at the hottest part of the day. It doesnt sound hopeful. Mad dogs and Englishmen...,

I've always liked his voice and the style of his broadcasts. I'm hoping for the best but fearing the worst.

I checked Google maps to look at the island simply because there's been a lot of talk about how rocky and dangerous parts of the island are. I wanted to see what it looks like. It's natural to be curious.
I've also looked at Israel and Palestine in recent months - particularly Gaza.
Google Earth is a very useful tool.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 07/06/2024 07:45

It’s a terrible time for his family - I think someone upthread mentioned an amnesia / fugue episode but even with that he should have been found
I wonder if being a resourceful man he recognised he was in trouble with the heat and left the main path to find some shade and lost consciousness - hence the difficulty finding him

Very worrying

ThatFlightyTemptressAdventure · 07/06/2024 07:45

I keep thinking about the TV series ‘I shouldn’t be alive’ where people overcome the odds to survive the most extreme circumstances and hoping that MM will have his own story to tell.

It must be unbearable for his wife and children.

SwingingPonytail · 07/06/2024 07:51

There are only 25 people now searching for him, today.

Yesterday there were just a handful. The Greek idea of a 'major search' is quite different to ours. Yesterday they had around half a dozen people searching.

The only possible scenarios are

He wandered off the path further into the hills, has fallen , injured himself (and got heat stroke too) or had a heart attack/ stroke.

Perhaps from a height he fell into the sea.

There is foul play (ie mugging/ hit and run).

And possible but unlikely, he took his own life.

larkstar · 07/06/2024 07:52

I remember this guy who went missing in Greece - it was 4 months before his body was found.

More recently actor Julian Sands was missing in California for over 5 months before his body was found

I hope his family get news soon and better news - he seems like a lovely fella.

Runner John Lawton's body found on mountain in Greece

The body of a runner from Cheshire who went missing during an off-road race in Greece in April is found on a mountainside.

I also started a thread (which got immediately shot down by another bizarrely confrontational poster!)

I merely pointed out that there was another thread already running and you should ask MNHQ to delete yours. Which they did.

That's a valid point but they were walking in far more treacherous areas- mountains- whereas this doesn't appear to be the same. More a short stroll along a well marked path unless he decided to go off somewhere else.

jennylamb1 · 07/06/2024 07:59

My auntie who lives on Rhodes says that it is pretty unbearably hot out there at the moment. Apparently he got a taxi boat from Pedi to the beach and later felt tired and decided to walk back along the coast path to get back to the villa he was staying at, it is only about 20minutes to Pedi. In the heat at 2pm it may be that he fainted or had a heart attack and very sadly fell from the path into the sea. It's a beautiful island, very small so without being morbid, it seems most likely that he's in the water. :((

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 07/06/2024 08:01

This thread is like a psychology experiment where something terrible happens and you gather a load of random strangers in a room and see how long it takes them to turn on each other.

I also looked up the island on Google maps yesterday because I want him to be ok and I was seeking reassurance by seeing what the terrain is like. I think that's really normal and understandable. What's less understandable is trying to shame other people for just being human beings and trying to make sense of something.

TheBloatedMiddle · 07/06/2024 08:06

I agree with you @IdisagreeMrHochhauser . I think that people who have intelligent and curious minds will seek knowledge in these sorts of situations. I had never heard of Symi before and I looked it up to see how big it was, what the terrain is like and so forth. Because I did not have any previous knowledge to put things into some sort of context for me. That is how I very usually react to things on the news that I don't know much about.
