My friend and I are traveling to Edinburgh by train.
As this is a special occasion we decided to buy first class tickets.
We have allocated seats.
Now we are panicking about the journey.
Do we get free food or should we buy something to eat.
What about drinks.
What do we wear.

OP posts:

Why are you panicking? Go to the website of the train company you're travelling with. They will tell you what is included in your first class ticket.

Wear whatever you like there is no dress code.

Enjoy!

Lesleyknopeswaffleiron · 05/06/2024 20:38

Wear what you like! Most journeys have free food but check your train company’s website - they’ll usually have the menu.

have a lovely trip!

You wear ordinary clothes, it's not the orient express.

There is a trolley. It comes along every now and again. There's tea, coffee, water and soft drinks for free and alcohol that you pay for.

At breakfast time you can order something light like porridge or a sausage sandwich. There's snacks like fruit and flapjacks on the trolley.

After breakfast time there is ordinary sandwiches and things like cakes and biscuits and crisps on the trolley.

First class is formal wear only. So evening gowns for the ladies and top hat and tails for the men.

EmmyPankhurst · 05/06/2024 20:42

LNER have moved from Diet Coke to Pepsi.

Ruined the experience for me!

First class is formal wear only. So evening gowns for the ladies and top hat and tails for the men.

Caviar and champagne is served though!

OP, actually there's no dress code.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2024 20:44

Save the tiara till after dinner though. For the casino car.

honestly op just wear whatever you like. There’s good provided but if you want to take your own snacks that’s ok too!

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 05/06/2024 20:47

Last time I went First class on the train (earlier this year) tea, coffee and biscuits were offered during the week, but not at the weekend much to my disappointment Confused

juneybean · 05/06/2024 20:48

If it's CrossCountry you get complimentary refreshments.

EachandEveryone · 05/06/2024 20:51

Take your own food as its hit and miss what you get and portion sizes. It was free booze though last time I took that route.

sawadekah · 05/06/2024 20:53

Are you travelling at the weekend or in the week? You get better food in the week. Always free drinks and food, booze after lunch/evenings too on LNER.

Latenightreader · 05/06/2024 20:54

Depending on whete you start from there might be a first class lounge. I had some nice free drinks and snacks whilst delayed at Euston on the one occasion I had a first class ticket to Manchester!

LaurieFairyCake · 05/06/2024 20:56

Have you travelled in from the 20's?

Cos if so then I have to tell you first class has changed

It's tea in a paper cup, mini pack of biscuits and a bloke in too tight kecks checking you've a right to be there 🤷‍♀️ fairly aggressively

Listinggracefully · 05/06/2024 20:57

Are you going Avanti or LNER? Avanti Weekend service is just tea/coffee and if they are short staffed you might need to go to the shop to get it.

Weekday there is food, but the choice is quite limited (although breakfast tends to be quite good). Alcohol and soft drinks are also included.

Some stations have lounges are included with 1st class, but don't offer as much as they used to. Still, they are somewhere nice to sit while you wait for your train.

If there was a dress code my kids and I would have been refused access years ago!

PinkTonic · 05/06/2024 20:58

I go once a week and there are certainly no sandwiches on GWR. Tea or coffee, juice, water, porridge pots, mini pastries and biscuits on the way up. Tea or coffee, soft drinks, wine or beer, peanuts, crisps and cake/biscuits on the way back.

YouCantCallMeBetty · 05/06/2024 20:59

First class is fun, I sometimes upgrade using Seatfrog if I want to treat myself need to work.

Usually the host is pretty friendly in my experience. The first time i was restrained and just had coffee, then heard others asking for lots more. Now I ask the host what they've got on the trolley and then take my pick! Travelled first class on GWR this weekend and had Coke Zero, coffee, water, biscuits, crisps and a snack box Blush

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 05/06/2024 21:00

LNER provides complimentary food and drinks. There is a menu on their website.

There is also a buffet car where you can buy additional food and drink.

There is no dress code - wear what you would wear in the cheap seats.

wavingfuriously · 05/06/2024 21:01

Enjoy! you get food on board. Seats are more comfortable, wear whatever you like 👍

SheilaFentiman · 05/06/2024 21:02

Weekday LNER first class have proper meals - not huge but tasty

that’s London to Edinburgh

Londonscallingme · 05/06/2024 21:05

It’s worth checking the service - some have free snacks where as some have a proper menu with meal options. You should be able to find out what’s provided on your service on the operator’s website. You don’t need to wear anything special.

beckybarefoot · 05/06/2024 21:07

last time i travelled first class, if it was before 11am we got a hot bacon sandwich and a cup of tea and a biscuit.

we wore the same as we would normally wear? you dont need to be all posh!

bear in mind, you may also share you space with someone else, so if you are a couple you may find yourselves travelling with another couple on your table.

sometimes its cheaper to travel first class than it is just regular fare... always worth checking

Wonkypictureframe · 05/06/2024 21:10

The staff on LNER are usually very friendly and heavy handed with the booze if you want it. The food is actually quite decent too.

TinDogTavern · 05/06/2024 21:10

Nothing to add other than ENJOY! I occasionally upgrade to Weekend First and the comfy seats and peace and quiet are worth it, irrespective of free goodies.

MissMuffetisin · 05/06/2024 21:15

If it’s LNER, there’s also a first class lounge you can use at Waverley - free coffee/ hot chocolate, biscuits, crisps, nice armchairs to relax in while you wait for the train. Worth getting there early for !

Theredoubtableskins · 05/06/2024 21:15

Are you imagining a downton abbey-esque affair on the train?
