I find I know and love many classical pieces of music but I never remember most of the names when I want to listen to it!

What would go on your playlist?

I'll start:
Edward Elgar - Nimrod

OP posts:
PatienceOfEngels · 03/06/2024 07:46

Bach's cello suite no. 1 in g major prelude

Canon in D - Pachelbel

PatienceOfEngels · 03/06/2024 07:46

The flower duet from Lakme

Bach Partitas

Brahms requiem

Allegri Misere

Sammilouwho · 03/06/2024 07:51

Handel's Water Music, it's not one piece but it's still beautiful.

Frenchticos · 03/06/2024 07:51

Love this thread OP!

MabelsBeats · 03/06/2024 07:56

Beethoven’s 5th. And 9th!

Vivaldi’s four seasons (spring is my favourite).

NashvilleQueen · 03/06/2024 07:57

Vaughan Williams lark ascending.

In terms of classical music, I tend to favour more recent rather than strictly "Classical" music. From the top of my head;

Mendelssohn - violin concerto in e minor.
Rachmaninov - 3rd piano concerto
Grieg - Peer Gynt/in the hall of the mountain king
Satie - Gymnopedie
Patrick Hawes - Star Gazer
Leonard Bernstein - Rhapsody in Blue

Frenchticos · 03/06/2024 08:01

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads - ahh the Satie is gorgeous. It’s my calming music

MaryBethMayfair · 03/06/2024 08:01

I also enjoy classical music but struggle with the names & knowledge around it. I find Spotify has some good pre-made playlists. I stick one of them on and am quite happy. Maybe the odd few that I'll skip past but in the main, I enjoy it!

ZenNudist · 03/06/2024 08:03

Alexander Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia

Bedrich Smetana Ma vlast, vltava (the 2nd movement). I love the whole piece but the first 3 especially

Dvorkak New world symphony, the Scherzo (but again the whole lot)

Faure 'Pavane'

Saint-Saens 'Danse Macabre

Classic FM do a double cd called "Classic FM for Babies", which has a "Sleeping" and "Playing" cd. I don't know if it's still available, or available as a playlist, but it's a very good curation of accessible classical music.

WiseKhakiGoose · 03/06/2024 08:11

Mozart piano concerto no 21, 2nd movement;
Chopin Nocturne op. 9 No 2;
Chopin Nocturne op. 9 No 1;
Chopin Fantaisie Impromptu;
Beethoven moonlight sonata 1st movement;
Beethoven moonlight sonata 3st movement;
Beethoven Appassionata Piano Sonata No 23 Op 57 - part 3.

I recommend to listen to Arthur Rubinstein recordings for Chopin.

JacksonAverysEyes · 03/06/2024 08:12

Do you listen to Classic FM OP? It’s a great way to identify what you like.

A few modern suggestions which suit a playlist:
Home by Ola Gjeilo
Adagio on G minor by Albinoni/Giazotto
Por una cabeza by Gardel
Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor

Not as modern but I also love Scheherazade Op. 35 by Rimsky-Korsakoff

WaverOfSticks · 03/06/2024 08:31

Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony...

Cinateel · 03/06/2024 08:40

My favourite, which was played during the signing of the register at my wedding and also at my husband’s funeral is Meditation from Thais by Massinet.

Keepingongoing · 03/06/2024 08:52

‘Quiet City’ suite by Aaron Copland

Vivaldi flute concerto ‘La Notte’ , there is a mind blowing interpretation on YouTube which I will post if I can find it

Keepingongoing · 03/06/2024 08:56

It’s the Bremer Baroque orchestra with Dorothee Oberlinger playing the recorder instead of flute.

Picklesjar20 · 03/06/2024 09:04

Adiemus by Karl Jenkins

November by Max Richter

Happiness does not wait by Olafur Arnalds

The stars we follow also Meridian by Frederico Albanese

Philip Glass pieces and Einaudi.

Also Vivaldi four seasons, the flower duet.

CollaterlieSistersSister · 03/06/2024 09:05

Faure's Pavane (already mentioned) and Cantique de Jean Racine.

Also already mentioned, Misere Mei - beautiful.

Will add more but should be working!

Medicinalfriedchicken · 03/06/2024 09:09

Gustav Holst - The Planets Suite
Jupiter is my favourite!

Mischmasch · 03/06/2024 09:10

Leonard Bernstein - Rhapsody in Blue

Great piece but it’s by George Gershwin.

Medicinalfriedchicken · 03/06/2024 09:21

Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi Four Seasons: Spring

Handel: Zadok the Priest

The Flower Duet from Lakmé

Barber: Adagio for Strings

Oh and if going for some Karl Jenkins, I also recommend Tintinnabulum, as well as pp's Adiemus! Both amazing.
