Whilst allotment gate is basically over this is to continue the lovely chats about baking, beetroots and Babs when she comes back off holiday 🤣
Ill also use it to update DH’s new hobby in which he is channelling Alan Titchmarsh and also, my health, as a lot of people have very kindly asked Smile

Ready to see photos of … what is the most important article to be on the plot of land?
Deck chairs, table and glasses/mugs ?

I need an update on Sally Seller as well!

PandaChopChop · 01/06/2024 20:45

It's behind a Telegraph paywall I'm afraid, so I work from screenshots of the recipe.

I once accidentally forgot the eggs, which meant that I ended up with something that couldn't be sliced as it didn't hold together. I covered it with creme fraiche and sprinkled it with pomegranate arils and pistachio nibs, and hey presto, a spoonable dessert! Also recommended!

Not the same as the cake @saraclara makes but the Nigella Lawson recipe is good (she also has a chocolate orange version). https://www.nigella.com/recipes/clementine-cake

Clementine Cake

This, an adaption of Claudia Roden's magnificent orange and almond cake, is a wonderfully damp, dense and aromatic flourless cake: it tastes like one of those sponges you drench, while cooling, with syrup, only you don't have to. And it's such an acc...

What’s happened about the garage after the guy died?!

We already reclaimed it but his sister was trying to get into it as she thought he still was using it.

She’s been a nightmare actually, if we are in the garden she’s in hers and makes comments about “people thinking they own the whole street”. She also had a visitor yesterday who parked on our across the road driveway!! And she came out (I could hear her from garden) and say “Sorry Paul apparently that’s not Garage Thief’s drive anymore”.
Thankfully I’ve got far too many other problems to let this behaviour get to me!

I fucking dreamt about beetroot last night 🤣🤣 I’m get to be convinced that it’s not anything but horrible stuff but once DH grows his beets I will use them in a chocolate cake and soup too.

I think I'd like beetroot if there was a variety that didn't taste like dirt 😭

Patiently waiting for some golden beets to hurry up and grow but I'll not hold my breath that they'll be any different.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 01/06/2024 22:04

@saraclara and @artant

Thank you both so much !

ChishiyaBat · 01/06/2024 22:10

That isn't a dream @YaMuvva that is a full on nightmare😂😂😂! I honestly hate the stuff, but I hope the home grown stuff he brings you is good, maybe it'll even change your view on beetroot.

OhcantthInkofaname · 01/06/2024 22:11

In the US here - Golden beets are my absolutely favorite vegetable. My favorite way of preparing them is slicing them using vegetable oil and salt and pepper and roasting them.

Callipygion · 01/06/2024 22:20

Is it beetroots that were originally a different colour ( golden?)? Or was it carrots that changed colour?

Carrots used to be purple if I remember correctly.

Im sure I once got purple carrots from Waitrose once!! It was purple something anyway

OP posts:
Jimmyneutronsforehead · 01/06/2024 22:47

We get a tray of mixed colour carrots from Tesco and the purple ones take forever to cook so if you cook them all together you end up with some over cooked and some undercooked.

They're all delicious but definitely don't think they should be mixed in a tray to cook. Not really sure why colour makes a difference to cook time.

ChishiyaBat · 01/06/2024 22:48

I just googled, carrots used to be purple, you can obviously still buy/grow them and they are very good for you, even moreso than their orange buddies. Shame I don't like carrots though😂.
