Help - What Social Class am I?

Cappuccino33 · 01/06/2024 19:26

This may seem strange but I am keen to know what social class I fit into. I switched careers recently and now work in publishing. I hear so much chat about "middle class writer" "working class writer" "upper class" and bourgeoisie! I never came across so much emphasis on social class before and I never gave a huge amount of weight or thought to where I might sit but I'm super curious. Here are some of my bio points:

I grew up on a farm (in a picturesque area).
My mum worked in a low level management role in a large company.
Went to a small village primary school.
Church associated secondary school (fee paying but the fees were small in comparison to larger public schools- students were from most walks of life)
University College London Degree
Masters degree from a lesser prestigious uni.
I live in London in a dual income home (renter, 32 years old)
Hobbies - literature, drama, horses, architecture, yoga, art house film.

Middle.

The defining question for distinguishing which tier you are within that is....

Did your grandmothers clean their own bathrooms?

Comedycook · 01/06/2024 19:29

You are middle class.... obviously.

Just for fun by the way! Smile

I don't understand why you don't know?

Beginningless · 01/06/2024 19:35

Yes, middle. Is there something that makes you think otherwise?

Leafblow · 01/06/2024 19:36

Middle,
If you want get into specific catagories that nobody uses there is a bbc class test

Berlinlover · 01/06/2024 19:36

Not this again 🥱

Hotnamehere · 01/06/2024 19:37

🙄

Lol this just gave me elite. I’m 100% working class 🤣

CremeEggThief · 01/06/2024 19:40

You couldn't get much more middle-class than you, OP!🤣

DildoHarding · 01/06/2024 19:40

How do you not know? You can't be upper class without a title. You're not working class with a prolonged education which only leaves one option

Saschka · 01/06/2024 19:41

Obviously middle. Probably middle-middle.

Is there something that makes you think the privately-educated child of a manager is somehow working class? Or do you think you’re an aristocrat? Genuinely puzzled how you don’t know you’re middle class…

AstonMartha · 01/06/2024 19:42

The lowest of the low. HTH.

Bellevilles · 01/06/2024 19:42

I am keen to know what class you thought you might be rather than middle class.

haddockfortea · 01/06/2024 19:46

That class test is ridiculous.

StoneTheCrone · 01/06/2024 19:46

Another one keen to know why you're so puzzled by what your blindingly obvious social class may be.

daisychain01 · 01/06/2024 19:46

Comedycook · 01/06/2024 19:34

I don't understand why you don't know?

More's to the point, why do you care?

shallow

TinaYouFatLard · 01/06/2024 19:48

Glaringly middle class. Like PP I’m confused how you thought you could be anything else.

GentlemanJohnny · 01/06/2024 19:48

Middle. If you need to ask, the answer is always "middle".

Circleinthesand81 · 01/06/2024 19:49

haddockfortea · 01/06/2024 19:46

That class test is ridiculous.

And extremely outdated!

missshilling · 01/06/2024 19:50

Does it really matter?

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 01/06/2024 19:51

Lower middle

Cappuccino33 · 01/06/2024 19:52

Just to clarify- this is for fun.
Nothing about this matters in the grand scheme of things - obviously.
I've lived my whole life without considering this - certainly not shallow.
I grew up in a rural area, mostly working class neighbours and friends.
I feel a gulf away from many of my colleagues in the social sense so I wondered if I'm more working class.
