Countries Putting Up “Closed to British Tourists” Signs

I keep seeing articles about how certain countries don’t want British tourists.
IMO what they don’t want is a certain type of tourist – the ones who are loud drunks, who disrespect local customs and traditions, who display antisocial behaviour and basically who are an embarrassment to the rest of us and who know how to behave.

One of the countries listed was Greece, where we have just had a lovely holiday. We met nothing but a friendly welcome from all the locals. We didn’t see any antisocial behaviour, but then we don’t holiday in the kind of places where drinking all day and all day English breakfasts is the main attraction.

If these holiday destinations don’t want these kind of visitors perhaps they should make them less attractive to them – put up the price of drinks, don’t offer cheap AI holidays to include as much alcohol as you can drink, increase the minimum age for drinking alcohol, close down a few bars and nightclubs etc.

My friends are German, they are getting similar anti German info too but in reality it's actually a very small minority of local people who are anti tourist because the majority are earning money directly or indirectly from us. What is hated is the rise of Airbnbs (other unscrupulous letting sites are availableGrin) in residential areas as it means they are struggling to find long term renters and the prices are up - even more a problem in year round resort locations like Tenerife.

Stick to hotels or dedicated holiday let's, stick to the local laws and be respectful and they are very welcoming

@CassandraWebb

As long as you book accommodation that has been built as dedicated holiday accommodation there isn't an issue, we've always had self catering accommodation, the issue is the proliferation of unlicensed accommodation in residential areas pushing up rents and too much noise for locals. A holiday complex isn't competing with locals for rentals

But they don't fall about drunk in the street, vomit, fight and cause mayhem and damage to property etc.

Yes - presumably that’s because the punishment for such behaviour would be pretty draconian and they’d be booted out of the country.

There’s an element of that for sure but also Dubai is a pretty expensive place to go on holiday ( relative to the European party resorts- and alcohol is very expensive) and is mainly couples and families- you don’t see young groups of friends much, so there’s also the fact that the demographic is different.

People definitely might get a bit lively within the confines of the hotels but yeah, no fighting etc.

There was that navy guy that went missing and the theory is he got in a fight with a taxi driver and ended up buried in the desert.

Absolutely @Barbadossunset.

There's a lack of personal standards, discipline and respect. A significant proportion of the population aren't taught these by parents, who make excuses for poor behaviour at school and give teachers grief when they try to impose discipline.

They grow up with an entitlement to cause whatever havoc they like, home or abroad.

👏👏👏

On your posts OP you say -

but then we don’t holiday in the kind of places where drinking all day and all day English breakfasts is the main attraction.

If they are going to offer cheap AI holidays with all you can drink alcohol it isn't rocket science to work out what kind of holiday maker they are going to get. although, I agree that it isn't their fault that some visitors are badly behaved.
We avoid busy resorts with loads of clubs and bars, so we never come across this kind of behaviour.

This sounds a bit to me like tarring those who enjoy AI as boozy louts

I think you have been rather defensive here. An AI holiday that includes limitless alcohol might well have more appeal to the type of holidaymaker that these countries don't want as well as those who aren't troublemakers.

It was not my intention to suggest that everyone who does an AI holiday can't control their drinking.

I don't see it as victim blaming. If they are going to offer cheap AI holidays with all you can drink alcohol it isn't rocket science to work out what kind of holiday maker they are going to get. although, I agree that it isn't their fault that some visitors are badly behaved.

Who are 'they'??? Aren't you guilty of tarring 'them' with the same brush? It's British tourist operators who actually run a lot of these places.
