If you had your hair dyed yesterday, would these roots annoy you?

Had my hair dyed yesterday and this is how it looks today. She used foils. Does this look really bad to you?

I hate the colours, it's a really brassy blonde, but the roots seem horrendous to me? If you're a hairdresser, is there any reason why you don't get the foils closer to the head, or is she just not very good?

(And yes, it is very uneven and much blonder on one side than the other).

I’d be going back and asking them to put it right.

I bet it wasn’t cheap, was it?

Pebbles16 · 31/05/2024 20:54

That is disgraceful. Any professional would want to put that right

littlebluecaravan · 31/05/2024 20:57

I wouldn't be happy either that there should be no hint of regrowth the new colour should be closer to the root.

God that's awful!

A professionally trained "expert" did that?
I use a box kit and either DH or DD applies it for me. £6.50. They do a way way better job than that...

jennylamb1 · 31/05/2024 21:03

It's not awful but it's not top notch. The best hair salon I ever went to (a branch of Harrington's), would pull on the hair before applying the colour on the foil so it pulled the hair length and got right to the root. 90% of hairdressers don't seem to do that.
I would use another salon next time. Some people will tell you that it shouldn't be coloured all the way to the root because of possible reaction but my pet hate has always been leaving with what I see as 2 weeks re-growth already.

QuestionAir · 31/05/2024 21:09

Aside from the root issue (which I agree is an issue) it doesn’t look like the bleach has been left to develop fully and / or they haven’t used the right toner …

I’m sorry OP - not least as hairdressers are so expensive at the moment.

ManilowBarry · 31/05/2024 21:49

That looks amateurish at best.

Go back as that is not acceptable from a professional.

gleefulstar · 01/06/2024 06:37

Yeah I suspected it was awful.

No toner was used, just foils, shampoo and conditioner.

I don't want to go back as I don't think she's got the capability of fixing it. I think I'll go and buy a box dye and do it myself.

Thanks everyone

I have just had very similar. I'm now midway between appointments and still hate it.

Op, can you report back on what box dye you use? I'm a bit nervous but no amount of purple shampoo has sorted this and I'm sick of the brass.

WimpoleHat · 01/06/2024 08:41

I have highlights. I don’t think it looks awful at all - I think you always get a bit of root from foils. Remember too that people won’t be looking at you from that angle!

Thecatlady82 · 01/06/2024 08:47

I’d expect better if I was getting my hair coloured in a salon - I only use a box dye now every 8 weeks as I have grey through my roots - top up with a root spray in between as the grey comes back quickly - I used to use a salon for hair colour but realised the grey still came back quickly and it wasn’t worth it.

So I've just dyed it this morning. It's not great but better than it was and no roots! I used an ash blonde to try and lift the roots and take away some of the yellow tones. This is what I used and how it looks now...

Still not perfect and the photo doesn't really show it too well but it does look a lot more natural. I just put it on the roots for 20 mins then combed through for a couple of inches for the last 10 mins.

You've done a great job. It looks lovely now.

hurlyburlygirly · 01/06/2024 13:21

Wow! That's lovely. Much better. I think you were lighter than me to begin with but I'd just do that from now on if it looks like that! You'll save a fortune

Floralnomad · 01/06/2024 13:23

That looks heaps better and much more natural now @gleefulstar , looks like you are better off doing it at home

SuncreamAndIceCream · 01/06/2024 13:23

Agree you did a great job with that box colour

shrinkingbee · 01/06/2024 13:28

It's darker on one side and the highlights don't appear to have the correct peroxide used or left on long enough to develop. I would ask if you could pop in, or send photos through and this could be rectified with a few more highlights as it doesn't appear to be over processed.

shrinkingbee · 01/06/2024 13:28

Sorry - just seen the update. Looks a lot better!!

Beamur · 01/06/2024 13:31

You've done a great job on your hair. Nicely rescued!

sparkleowl · 01/06/2024 13:37

I always get a bit of root when I get my highlights done, every six months, think it’s so that bleach won’t run on the scalp which is painful.
I do what you’ve done, I buy the box colour nearest to my lights, which is No.8 in a root cover, do the parting and temples with it, leave for 15 minutes and rinse out. Then do it again in 3 months.

DontBiteTheCat · 01/06/2024 13:39

That looks great!

Springwatch123 · 01/06/2024 13:40

Can you send her the ( first) photo and ask for a full or partial refund? Maybe even show her the ‘after’ photo to show her how you expected it to look (regarding roots)?

gleefulstar · 01/06/2024 15:55

Thanks everyone, much happier.

I won't be getting in touch, I agree that she hasn't left on long enough to develop properly. But I can't help thinking if she didn't know that, she probably wouldn't be able to fix it. I just don't think she's very good 😬

I've made an appointment with another hairdresser recommended by a friend who I'll go and see in a few weeks.

hurlyburlygirly · 01/06/2024 16:26

My very experienced hairdresser let me leave the other week and must have known I hated my hair. I nearly cried. I had asked for subtle ashy highlights, no yellowy tones and ended up with pretty much a block gold colour with copper bits. My skin undertone is pink and what I ended up with looks awful on me. The regrowth is horrible too as there's so much dye in it that the roots really show.

The thought of then getting the same person to fix something which has just taken them hours is grim. I didn't have time to stay that day or to go back so I'm living with it and toning the hell out of it.

I cannot understand how you can have the same person for ages and they suddenly stop listening to what you're asking for. It's happened to me a few times.
