So it's about two women one older who is on the shelf. She might be a companion.. another much younger woman who may or may not be out but is an heiress. The younger woman meets a young man she's rather enamored with. Older woman thinks she's meeting this man and approaches him to tell him off for romancing the younger woman for her fortune. Turns out she's actually meeting an older man of the same name who has recently returned from India having nursed a young man on the voyage. Anyway everything turns out well in the end with younger woman ending up with man who was nursed on the voyage and the older woman with the older man who effectively elopes with her.

I'm about to go on a flight and would love to read it again.

CatonmyKeyboard · 30/05/2024 17:06

Sprig Muslin or Bath Tangle, I think

SereneHighnessPrincessTheresa · 30/05/2024 17:07

I just bought a massive pile of Georgette Heyers in a charity shop, I haven't read any yet, but having had a quick look could it be Bath Tangle?

littlebitsofgranite · 30/05/2024 17:18

Black Sheep, Georgette Heyer

ashiningbeaconinspace · 30/05/2024 17:31

It's Black Sheep

ashiningbeaconinspace · 30/05/2024 17:33

Blurb for Black Sheep:-
"Abigail Wendover has no time for love. She is far too busy protecting her niece, who has fallen madly in love with a suspected fortune-hunter. But her efforts become vastly more complicated with the arrival of Miles Calverleigh, the black sheep of his family - a reckless bachelor with a scandalous past."

Weirdly, I was referencing this book on a Baby Names thread choosing between Miles and Oliver earlier today.

Miles is the rough diamond in Black Sheep, while Oliver is the sweet young lad who has a crush on the niece.

Oliver is the rough diamond in Lady Of Quality, but isn't as loveable as Miles.

IridescentShadow · 30/05/2024 17:36

Definitely "Black Sheep"!

CountingCrones · 30/05/2024 17:39

Identical plot, different book.

Abigail becomes Annis, the niece heiress becomes a runaway heiress, the empty-headed garrulous sister becomes an even more empty headed garrulous cousin / hired companion, Miles the disgraced younger son who made his fortune in India becomes Oliver the arrogant eldest son rolling in money. Both have interferring brothers who think they know best.

I'm with you there.

I also have a sneaking fondness for Sylvester, the first one I ever read, filched from my student landladies' shelf when I was supposed to be reading up on thermodynamics.

The bit where he calls Young Lochinvar a damned loose screw makes me laugh out loud every time.

Love Cotillion False Colours and the Grand Sophy but my favourite character is Frederica
