Swimming pool hygiene- other people!

I go swimming regularly 3-5 times a week and am always disgusted by the habits of others and wondered if 1) this happens everywhere and 2) if it would annoy anyone else

  1. Not putting rubbish in the bin. Today it was a swimming mask packet chucked in the floor. Previously a huge space
blanket left on the changing unit. empty shampoo containers and so on left it the showers
  1. people wearing outdoor footwear in the showers when trying to shower kids after swimming lessons. one woman always wears wellies or country boots thick with mud. this means i have to shower in muddy foot prints. in wished they ban out door footwear in the showers or provide shoe covers as no one seems to have any any common decency anymore!
  1. the three open showers are opposite the the three toilet cubicles. 9/10 people do not wash their hands and go straight to the the pool back to the lockers. I
just find this so awful!

is it just me that this would annoy?

Yuck its very off-putting. I guess the best thing to do us to go as soon as it opens before people spoil it.

ShinyPebble32 · 30/05/2024 17:15

Oh god, this post has reminded why I never go to swimming pools 🤢

PrimitivePerson · 30/05/2024 18:27

I'm amazed at how squeamish people are. None of this bothers me in the slightest.

YANBU.

Recently had a trip to Iceland and visited the local swimming pool.

Despite the pool being 70 years old and therefore slightly tired, it was completely spotless and such a serene experience.

You have to take your shoes off before you enter the changing rooms; you then must undress, take your costume into the showers and shower completely naked (and there's a handy diagram on the wall showing you all the parts you need to clean 😆), before putting on costume. Body wash dispensers in the showers.

You must then shower again naked after swimming and dry off before you go back into the changing rooms (so no yucky wet floors!). There's also a swimming costume dryer.

Simple measures, but it was cleaner than the modern, five-year-old leisure centre we go to in the UK.

Edited

It's not the facilities. It's the people. Spitting on streets, underpants in council pools, not showering before swimming, dental hygiene. It's an English thing.

Case in point.

Rude, but I'll let it go.

I stopped going to my big local pool because it was as revolting as all the descriptions on this thread. I found another one, slightly further away, that was as different as night from day. Clean, tidy, well cared for. Never saw any litter in the changing rooms or anything untoward floating in the water.

But I found the bloody men who used that pool really annoyingly splashy and with terrible lane etiquette. It was like the swimming equivalent of manspreading.

So now I have splashed out (see what I did there) on expensive membership of a fancy country club just for their lovely outdoor pool. It is pristine, everyone is well behaved, and if anyone dares to not shower there is a lady who seems to have perpetual residence in the hot tub who bellows “SHOWER PLEASE” without fail. 😁

Nomorecoconutboosts · 30/05/2024 21:36

@VenusClapTrap
loving the hot tub lady!

My daughter lifeguards during the holidays and cleaning is part of her role . People really are disgusting... things she's witnessed :

Snorting through one nostril
Telling kids to just pee in the pool
Dirty nappy's left in cubicles
Poo on the floor
People running their hands through loose hair and flicking the hair into the pool
People rubbing their hands on parts of their body to massage off the dry skin
Men giving their private parts a good rub and swish whilst in the pool
People spitting in the pool ( for some reason it's only ever boys/men that do this she has noted)
People peeling dry skin off parts of their body and flicking it into the pool water
Fingers in ears cleaning out earwax and washing fingers in the pool !

I don't swim in public pools ... sea and private pools on holiday for me !!

PrimitivePerson · 30/05/2024 22:08

@neonjumper You think the sea is cleaner than a public pool?

Thomasina79 · 30/05/2024 22:14

At my pool people have to remove their footwear before they enter the changing room. It is pretty clean and well run and although I agree about peoples questionable habits it wouldn’t stop me going! (Surely no one over the age of two wees in the water?). Anyway, it’s great exercise and helps me keep my weight down.

katebushh · 30/05/2024 22:49

I've never been so happy to be a non swimmer in my life reading this thread! I loathe public swimming pools.

Mademetoxic · 30/05/2024 22:58

People are disgusting. End of.

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 30/05/2024 23:26

I love swimming but I fully admit that I’m a pool snob. I pay a lot of money to use a private pool where they have a member of staff permanently cleaning the changing rooms.

Yes, the council one is significantly cheaper but it’s freezing, plasters and hair everywhere. The floor 🤢 . I can’t do it.

Shade17 · 31/05/2024 07:53

Even in a private pool on holiday you’re still swimming in the detritus from all the previous occupants.

Turisti · 31/05/2024 08:01

In our local public pool, they fill it up with fresh water once a year! I must admit that puts me off a bit...but I guess it's the norm?

Countrylife2002 · 31/05/2024 08:04

I swim 3x a week in a public pool and it’s reallly clean, I’ve never seen any rubbish. There is a cleaner constantly on the go mopping the floor etc (which is heated so nearly always dry).

That’s surprisingly regular. I guess due to the number of users. With other pools (I’m guessing private ones) the recommendation is every 7-10 years.

Purpleheatherfronds56 · 30/05/2024 09:12

Sorry the whole thing gives me the heaves!

I'm with you. It's the thought of all the bits in the same water as me 🤢

Precipice · 28/05/2024 21:13

I've seen real shit inside the pool before.

My son is a lifeguard. Once a father and son were refused entry to the small pool as there were lessons ongoing. Their response, after threatening the swiming teacher, was to get in the big pool and poo and then go into the changing cubicle, poo onto a towel and smear it all over the wall, leaving said towel on the floor.

The worst is a gym pool seeing sweaty people do a full workout and go straight into a pool without showering

LlynTegid · 31/05/2024 11:49

Sadly not surprised. Having outsourcing of leisure facilities does not incentivise managers and staff there to act to stop such behaviour and ban those responsible.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/05/2024 11:59

I love swimming.

I hate public swimming pools.

I think one of the problems is there just aren’t enough of them. So they all get packed.

But ugh the grossness. Hair, plasters. Yuk

Lordofmyflies · 31/05/2024 12:06

All of the above, plus the addition of eating in the changing rooms. Mum's with toddlers / children giving kids bloody rice cakes, bananas, grapes to silence them whilst they get changed and leaving food waste on the changing room floor. Gross. I resent having to tip toe over black banana skins to reach the pool!

ShillyShallySherbet · 31/05/2024 12:11

DD wears goggles and spends more time underwater than above when we go swimming, she comes up with all kinds of things she finds on the bottom of the pool and gives them to me 🤢 she tells me it’s gross down there. I’d rather not know to be honest. On holiday in France they had a robotic hoover that they set off in the pool every night, why can’t they do that in this country? Or do they and it’s just not very effective.
