Swimming pool hygiene- other people!

I go swimming regularly 3-5 times a week and am always disgusted by the habits of others and wondered if 1) this happens everywhere and 2) if it would annoy anyone else

  1. Not putting rubbish in the bin. Today it was a swimming mask packet chucked in the floor. Previously a huge space
blanket left on the changing unit. empty shampoo containers and so on left it the showers
  1. people wearing outdoor footwear in the showers when trying to shower kids after swimming lessons. one woman always wears wellies or country boots thick with mud. this means i have to shower in muddy foot prints. in wished they ban out door footwear in the showers or provide shoe covers as no one seems to have any any common decency anymore!
  1. the three open showers are opposite the the three toilet cubicles. 9/10 people do not wash their hands and go straight to the the pool back to the lockers. I
just find this so awful!

is it just me that this would annoy?

Sorry the whole thing gives me the heaves!

AgathaX · 30/05/2024 09:19

Add to all of that, people with long hair not tying it up. Revolting to see long hair floating around them.

Haven’t been swimming since a man cleared the contents of his nose out into the pool during a lane swim.

Ewww 🤢🤮

Sjh15 · 30/05/2024 09:40

It’s all disgusting yes but the only thing that can make you sick is diarrhoea. (I know this, I’m qualified in pool plants)

The rest of it is being a decent human being. Rubbish/nappies on the floor left for staff to pick up. Why? How entitled are you. Then people have the nerve to complain about rubbish but if everyone used the bins then there wouldn’t be any.

Again shoes is common decency and dirty shoes on the floor can cause swimmers to tread on the dirt and that will get in the pool. Again, the chemicals mean you won’t get sick but who wants to swim in hair and dirt! People are just entitled and rude and don’t care about others!

StepAwayFromGoogling · 30/05/2024 09:43

I thought that was the point of chlorine though? To kill all the germs and bacteria?

easylikeasundaymorn · 30/05/2024 09:45

Yeah I left my last "naice", expensive, health spa type place because so many men would jump, dripping in sweat, straight into the pool from the sauna/steam room for the temperature contrast, completely ignoring all the signs up saying to shower between.

Same with not showering before - could smell a miasma of aftershave/strong perfume or old fag smoke on some people as they swam next to you.

Also saw people shaving body parts in both the jacuzzi and the steam room 🤮

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/05/2024 09:46

@jamontoastaddict

"...one woman always wears wellies..."

Wellies in a shower? Surely they just fill up with water which rather defeats the point of wearing them? 😂Then they just slosh around when walking (Actually I did this is a child and quite liked it!)

Itneverrainsinsocal · 30/05/2024 09:54

@Sjh15 would you mind expanding on this a bit? I'm currently looking for somewhere to take my dd for swimming lessons but all pools give me the ick! the local leisure centre has reviews saying the pool gave them gastritis 😩 does the chlorine kill covid / norovirus?

Disturbia81 · 30/05/2024 09:59

The floor gunk and plasters gets me the most 🤢🤢

Izzy24 · 30/05/2024 10:06

The reason people do this is that they live like this at home - so it’s normal for them. 🤷‍♀️

Omg 😳 🤮

Afenn11111 · 30/05/2024 10:40

Hey, I get were your coming from completely. (I work in water treatment and in the the past 3 years have specialised in swimming pools) Correct - everyone should shower before getting into the pool, we all sweat etc not to to graphic. The litter is also a big problem but should be dealt with by staff if not calling out the offenders then at least picking it up. The high standards that most leisure centres/gyms operate in the UK will not make you Ill, the Ph and Cl levels in the water should destroy any bacteria also if you have a strong Cl scent this should be addressed as simple as it may sound that is Chlorine escaping from the water- talk to them or change gyms 👍🏽

rokaaroundthechristmastree · 30/05/2024 10:44

What about shaving legs or armpits in the showers? Is that yay or nay?

YouveGotAFastCar · 30/05/2024 10:56

People shave all the time in my gym changing rooms, but I think it’s pretty grim. They inevitably leave it all hairy.

I haven’t been swimming in a few weeks. Last time, while I was waiting for the other person in my lane to get back, a woman standing next to me asked her friend if she was ready to leave. “Just let me finish this wee”, she responded 🤢🤢🤢

I hate the way people walk past the "you must shower before entering the pool" signs without showering.

This is what I hate too. A private pool manger, I knew socially, told me that if you shower really well before you get into the pool you are less likely to come out smelling of chlorine as it sticks to dirt, sweat etc. I have tried it and it is true.
I also hate people who wear makeup when swimming. This is a filthy habit.

sandygrapes · 30/05/2024 11:18

A few weeks ago, my son's carer to him swimming and didn't put his swim nappy on

They had to clear out the pool for 30 mins to clean Grin

Oh my gosh! But surely she was joking? Grim Envy

PrimitivePerson · 30/05/2024 11:23

I've never given this stuff a second thought. Pool water is chlorinated and constantly filtered. That's good enough for me.

BigDahliaFan · 30/05/2024 11:24

I like countries where there's a huge social pressure to shower before getting in pool....it's just nicer.

Hermittrismegistus · 28/05/2024 18:54

You missed out 'People pissing in the pool'.

I’ve seen worse 💩

CharlotteBog · 30/05/2024 11:53

Gosh, my local council pools seems really lovely in comparison.
Outdoor shoes off before entering the wet changing area.
There are sometimes shampoo bottles etc in the showers, often I think people have forgotten them, but sometimes yes, people just leave empty ones there.
Rarely things left in the changing cubicles.
The pool is full of chlorine so I don't worry about what's in there.
The worst thing is that they don't empty the nappy bins often enough so it can be a bit stinky.

I've never seen anyone shave, piss, poo, pick their nose or leave a plaster.

shearwater2 · 30/05/2024 11:55

I do shower before entering the pool, but it really annoys me as getting wet under the poolside shower makes very little difference to anything, and I'm hardly going to give myself a full wash with soap as it's usually in a communal area, I'm already wearing my swimming costume and have just put shower gel away in the locker.

Exactly. Bloody germ freaks.

LuluBlakey1 · 30/05/2024 12:03

I hate swimming pools after reading an article about how as people get older, or are very overweight or suffer mobility problems and find very personal hygiene and baths/showers more difficult to manage they often rely on swimming pools as a method of keeping themselves clean once or twice a week.

I felt sick.

ComtesseDeSpair · 30/05/2024 12:04

I’ve never quite understood what a 20 second sluice with most of your body covered up under a tepid shower before getting into the pool is meant to achieve tbh. It isn’t going to get you clean and most of what is rinsed off your skin just runs straight down into the fabric of your costume to be taken into the pool with you.
