Weirdest thing you’ve lost in your house

I was thinking about this again this morning as I do a tidy up. About 2 years ago I bought a little paper Guillotine it was a bit longer than A4 and half the width, black plastic. Not a small easily misplaced thing. I used it maybe 6 times and I kept it in our craft cupboard. One day I went to use it and it simply wasn’t there! I looked all over the place and it’s just never resurfaced - my child and partner simply wouldn’t have thought about moving it or using it and it puzzles me on a regular basis.
What random things have disappeared in your house? Did they ever turn up again ?

Small, indoor watering can

App13 · 26/05/2024 19:50

Lindberg glasses, newly made 5 months after buying them

Never to be seen again 2 years on

Frustratedmummy79 · 26/05/2024 19:56

A terracotta pot with a lovely hydrangea in it! I put it in my car then got out and forgot about it. Never saw it again 🤷🏻‍♀️

Summertimer · 26/05/2024 19:59

Two dresses, but I’m reaching the conclusion that I must have put them in charity shop bag and donated them. There’s just nowhere else to look😮

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/05/2024 20:01

Currently lost a pair of Birkenstocks. Been looking for about a week. Tomorrow we get a suitcase down from the loft incase I left them in there after our last trip abroad, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Tristar15 · 26/05/2024 20:08

Lost my debit card, had been to the shops, used it, wasn’t at home the next time I checked. Assumed I’d lost it when out but looked high and low in the house for it. Cancelled it and got a new one. 2 weeks later the card I thought i had lost was simply lying in the middle of the carpet in the spare bedroom 🤷‍♀️

Also a bright red vegetable peeler. It has simply disappeared from the house!

My ironing board! No idea how we could have lost a fucking ironing board.

I think we must have a poltergeist (with a neatly pressed shroud).

Did you start a thread about this at the time? Sounds very familiar!

No! Which makes me feel so much less alone as there must be someone else out there as feckless as I am!

branvan5000 · 26/05/2024 20:33

@OldSchoolCasualty I know where the toothbrush is. Because I lost 3 and found them one day. It's down the back of a radiator!

Echobelly · 26/05/2024 20:35

In my first place I owned as an adult, I was home alone one night and doing my makeup, and I had a newish nice lipgloss. It was on my dressing table one moment, then it vanished, couldn't find it anywhere. I moved the furniture (that was quite big and heavy) a few years later when replacing it, thinking maybe I'd find it there, but no. Totally vanished!

Jifmicroliquid · 26/05/2024 20:38

My dissertation. I printed 2 copies and kept one in the wardrobe. It disappeared one day and I never found it.

Coffeegincarbs · 26/05/2024 20:41

The OP on here who lost the chain and weights from her grandfather clock! 👻

MarkandElizabethForever · 26/05/2024 20:43

A knife from our knife block. Only realised in the last week so we're still "looking" for it really. It was a Joseph Joseph one and a wedding present so pretty gutted! The only theory we've come up with is accidentally binning it but surely we'd notice it😫

Unless someone stole it and is going to return to murder us with it!

user1471453601 · 26/05/2024 20:54

I lost my fob that generated a random number to access my current account. I wasn't worried, because anyone else using it would also need my pin number and answer to my memorable questions.

I searched for it, I told my trusted cleaner I'd lost it, she remembered seeing it were I kept it. Neither of us found it. Six months later, it appears where it was last seen it. Both me and my cleaner were gobsmacked. We both knew it couldn't have been there all that time.

on a more prosaic level, about 20 years ago my daughter lost a bag of sprouts, intended for part of our Xmas lunch. They never turned up.

Norugratsatall · 26/05/2024 21:02

A little book on composting, sort of starter/idiots guide kind of thing. It was my bible for making successful compost and I've no idea where it is! Am sure I wouldn't have sent it to charity shop or leant it to anyone but it is not in the house.....luckily I have read it from cover to cover over the years and its content are firmly committed to memory. Nevertheless, its disappearance irks me!

TeabySea · 27/05/2024 10:47

Various things over the years.
An emerald and CZ ring. Not expensive but I liked it. Lost in a house move about 30 years ago.
A sock with an embroidered rainbow on. Bought a new pair of socks, wore them and put in the wash and only one came out. Checked inside duvet covers, etc and it's too big to be stuck in the filter.

Lovelyview · 27/05/2024 11:27

We did have a hamster disappear into a hole in a wall and end up in the ceiling. We took out a ceiling spotlight and constructed a tube back to her cage and she eventually came out a day later.

Ariela · 27/05/2024 12:09

A friend lent me a book this week, I read the first chapter yesterday, can't find it now. Worried I put it out with the recycling (a slim booklet-y book). Recycling was collected before 6am today.

Boogiemam · 27/05/2024 12:15

2 sports bras. Just completely disappeared. Through winter so they didn't blow off the line or anything strange like that. Also lost 2 pairs of tweezers. Again, no sight of them at all.

Currently my eye drops are missing, hayfever is a bitch. Had them Saturday night and can't find them at all.

A pair of sandals. They might have been thrown out as they were starting to fall apart but I remember gluing them back together and they were fine so I'm not 100% sure I threw them away but Ive hunted all over.

This house seems to swallow things whole..but then so does my ADHD so...

Ginkypig · 27/05/2024 12:48

Iv lost and sometimes found quite a lot over the years.

my house keys with attached key rings so not too small to notice for 6 months. Checked everywhere including under the couch seat pads in the 6 months I had also taken all the seat pads etc off to do the big couch hoover. Anyway 6 months after losing them I lifted the seatpad to retrieve a pen that had fallen between and there right in the middle (so not near any of the edges) was the keys. I SWEAR WITH EVERY FIBRE OF MY BEING THEY ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY WERE NOT THERE IN THE MULTIPLE TIMES I HAD CHECKED OR LIFTED THOSE CUSHIONS OR HOOVERED THE WHOLE THING OVER THE 6 MONTHS!

a pair of shoes, not found so far but definitely wouldn’t have thrown them out because they aren’t made now.

oh another pair of shoes I used for walking but I might have decided to throw them away but don’t remember doing so.

a whole box my clothes when we moved house, I think the movers stole them (no idea why, except my dads denim jacket which I loved! was on top so they might have thought it was men’s clothes) but will never know. It’s definitely gone because iv moved house more than 5 times since.

a couple of pieces of JEWELLERY. I’m still hoping iv put them somewhere “safe”

these are just a few examples of my unexplained losses.

ALongHardWinter · 27/05/2024 17:09

I've posted about this before on lost items in house threads. The strangest thing I've ever lost in my house is a 6 foot Christmas tree! I mean,WTAF?! How in earth can something that size disappear in a small 2 bedroom flat?! This was 25 years ago,and it's never reappeared to this day.

ALongHardWinter · 27/05/2024 17:26

Just remembered another one. About 10 years ago,I was going out for the day and made myself some sandwiches to take with me. About an hour after leaving the house,I realised that I'd left them at home. When I got home,I could not find them anywhere. They'd just vanished. I live alone (apart from my cat!) so no one else could have snaffled them. My DD said that they'd soon make their presence known 🤢 But they never did,so I can only assume that I must have accidentally thrown them in the bin.

A tarantula. 😂 It was fine. It reappeared a few days later and my arachnophobic housemate at the time was none the wiser, about the existence of said tarantula or his escape!

We once lost our pet rat. We knew he was in the dinning room so kept it shut until we found him

I see your frying pan and raise you a large le cruset cast iron pot. Poof, disappeared!

My largest saucepan is missing. I still have the lid, which proves it existed, but no pan. Really strange.

InSpainTheRain · 14/07/2024 18:59

I have lost the toilet brush and holder from the downstairs cloakroom. It went about 8 weeks ago. The thing is my house is so tidy it can't be anywhere (this isn't a boast, it is just how I am). No idea where it went, have search everywhere, everyone denies any knowledge of where it has gone. I mean a necklace or something nice that you take outside I get - but the toilet brusher and holder?!
