Weirdest thing you’ve lost in your house

I was thinking about this again this morning as I do a tidy up. About 2 years ago I bought a little paper Guillotine it was a bit longer than A4 and half the width, black plastic. Not a small easily misplaced thing. I used it maybe 6 times and I kept it in our craft cupboard. One day I went to use it and it simply wasn’t there! I looked all over the place and it’s just never resurfaced - my child and partner simply wouldn’t have thought about moving it or using it and it puzzles me on a regular basis.
What random things have disappeared in your house? Did they ever turn up again ?

A watch that belonged to my mum. Was sorting out jewellery left to me and brother after dad died and I thought I would get the watch serviced and working.

It's vanished, I hope it will eventually turn up and really hope I haven't accidentally thrown it out with the mountains of paperwork we also inherited. 😥

My handbag. Good Friday 2 years ago, I was just leaving for church and couldn't find a large, bright red handbag. It had everything in it: purse, kindle, oyster card and a very nice pen.

I wear my bag with the strap across my body to deter snatchers (and so it can't slip off my shoulder unnoticed). I'd been shopping the night before, so deffo had it then. No-one could have got in the house to take it, so where it went is a mystery.

And as days to lose your bag go, it was a disaster - 4 whole days before any replacements could be sorted. I had to get a friend to buy a new travel pass for me and borrow from my neighbours.

Some of these are as odd as mine - my daughter likes the comic book ‘Hilda’ which is set in Norway, I think, and it’s explained in there that everyone has a “Nissa” living in a different dimension in their house who routinely steals items. This is the most logical explanation I’ve found!

A scythe, a huge antique one.
A hanging 60s cane chair.
A giant Playmobil Father Christmas.

How big is your house...

The giant Playmobil figures are massive!

Playmobil firemen - we bought a job lot on eBay, about 30 firemen, we were renting before moving overseas and somehow there was only about 10 left when we moved. No idea where they went, we checked the garden etc.

And ping pong balls!! I bought a tub of 60, our pets love them. Realised after a fairly long time that we didn't have many left, so I bought more without giving it too much thought, but they all disappeared quite quickly!! Just happened to be watching one of the cats playing and saw her push a toy up under the lip of the deck, (where there was another bit of wood so we didn't think the balls could get under there) and the toy disappeared. She was managing to push things up and over the wood - we found 120 items under the deck! From ping pong balls to toy mice and even the dogs toys!

My school bible. We were given a bible each when first starting senior school many moons ago. 30 plus years ago it lived on a shelf with cookbooks in the utility room. I'm not religious but my mum - also not religious - said a house should always have a bible, and insisted I took it with me when I left home. I packed it up with said cookbooks to put it out of the way when we had a new boiler fitted. All the cookbooks were there when the box was unpacked, but the bible wasn't there. My husband wouldn't have touched the box, the kids were to young, it was only me. And I'd never have thrown it out, so where is it? You know how things turn up eventually? Well, I'm still waiting!

RoobarbAndMustard · 26/05/2024 14:06

A £1200 Omega watch which was a gift for my 50th. Took it odd before I went to bed one night and never seen since. Weird.

TeamPolin · 26/05/2024 14:16

I decided to start keeping a cash contingency of £50 in the house case of emergencies. I put it in a very safe place, where I wouldn't see it daily and be tempted to spend it...

Can't remember for the life of me where the 'safe place' was....

yellowsmileyface · 26/05/2024 14:22

A completed jigsaw puzzle!

It wasn't a big one, roughly a4 size. I remember putting it on a shelf after I'd finished. Some time passed and I realised it was missing. I definitely wouldn't have thrown it out, and I can't see where I would have moved it to. It's not sitting deconstructed in the box.

How on earth does one lose a puzzle?? This was years ago and it still bothers me.

CJ0374 · 26/05/2024 14:24

As a child, living abroad, my brother had all manner of pets- mainly in his bedroom!
1 year a childrens' python went missing- never to be seen again
Another time, a mouse escaped- also within the house then a year later, a tree frog.
My mum still lives in the same house, and I often wonder if I will eventually find a massive python which has been living under the house for 40yrs 😬

A curtain finial. Big ugly metal thing. Took it off to hang a curtain, reached for it to replace and it had gone. Haven't seen it since. Aliens. With an eye (how many I don't know, we're talking aliens here) for interior design. Only explanation.

Lilothblos · 26/05/2024 14:31

My car keys about 2 years ago. I got back from the supermarket and must have had them in the car then, I took the shopping inside, unloaded it and never saw the keys again. I even went through all of the bins and we’ve since totally renovated the kitchen where I unloaded the shopping and no sign of them. Cost £300 to replace!

Possinass · 26/05/2024 14:33

As a teenager I had a signed photo print of my favourite boy band member. I had it above my bed. One day it just wasn't there anymore. I hunted for days and was actually really upset. I was watching videos in my room with my friend the day I realised it was gone. She helped me hunt for it for hours. I was so upset about it. (Said boy band member is sadly dead now and I'm still upset over it)
It wasn't until about 20 years later I twigged that my friend had most likely stolen it. Because it was there that morning. She came round. And suddenly it wasn't there anymore. I was very naive as a teenager and it would never cross my mind that she would steal it. But there's no other explanation. Unless it was a ghost. (I was an only child so no siblings to blame. And no reason my parents would randomly take it considering they allowed my room to be plastered with photos and posters of boy bands!)

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 26/05/2024 14:40

We lost the smallest pair of a set of 3 dumbbells.

Not to be found anywhere in the house.

Even when we moved we didn't come across them.

Still wonder where they might've wandered off to😂

Owl9to5 · 26/05/2024 14:44

I was scrolling through the replies and I saw a picture of a sofa. I thought, what, wait, somebody lost a sofa! (it's an ad. It's a nice sofa too)

I'm always losing expensive gym gear. If I order track bums from amazon for 10 euro i'll have them for 15 years. If i splurge on sweaty or betty or lulu lemon i lose them. Can't figure it out. I was really trying to find some expensive stuff I bought only 3 months ago. Cannot find them........

My 'Nissa' only wants my good stuff.

ATribeCalledQuestion · 26/05/2024 14:46

A carrier bag full of multi packs of crisps. I was in charge of crisps for a party. They were all in a bag in the kitchen. I went to grab them to put by the front door ready for when I was leaving. Not there. They never turned up. I had to go to the party via Tesco! Still bugs me to this day.

Sahara123 · 26/05/2024 14:50

I think I remember a thread about someone who lost an ironing board in their house/flat never to be found again. I wonder if it ever turned up

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 26/05/2024 14:52

Two watches, at the same time.

One was a daily wear, nothing special but I didn't want to damage it while doing all that lifting+carrying when moving house, so I put in a specific ice cream tub with a bunch of bedside table stuff for packing. Wasn't there when we unpacked, nothing else missing.

The other was a Hello Kitty swatch type one and was packed in with other Sanrio kitsch items. Again, gone when unpacked.

We did the whole packing, move, unpacking ourselves! We also did the cleanup at the old apartment, and unpacked immediately at the new place. That was 20 years ago, never seen either again. I was so miffed it was only a year or so back that I started wearing watches again...

ssd · 26/05/2024 14:54

I bought a naice notebook for my passwords, I'd wanted one for ages and was chuffed I'd finally bought it for myself.
I brought it home and it hasn't been seen since.
I refuse to buy another.

A bra I only got at Christmas. Very frustrating.

BG2015 you mean not easy to lose with it being bright blue 🙂

Hilda books are lovely!

My jewelry box. We moved abroad and I put it somewhere “safe”, and haven’t found it in the past 5 years we’ve been back.

No burglars. It’s possible our house sitters found it and stole it, but it was costume jewelry so not really worth anything. And I’d imagine a thief would take individual items not the whole box. We are moving house at the moment and hoping it turns up when we unpack.
